I have a loathing of uncontrolled alien fungal growth.
That's why you should climb the tech tree that allows you to control it. That was an uber-strat. Then, when your units meet the random masses of natives, they can convert them. Then you can have those go convert more. Those that don't convert end up buffing up the converted ones (+ monoliths), and soon you have a plethora of huge boils all over the world (+ fungal movement bonus and whatnot).

I love SMAC.

Then again, I think posting that poll here screwed my chances for Colonization 2 :( But more support for SMAC2 is worth it, at least Colonization got some support, makes me feel warm and moist like a brownie.

Playing Civ3 (prefab units only) after SMAC felt like a huge step backwards, gameplay-wise, with little particularly new but the graphics and much-reviled culture system.
That's how I felt playing Civ2 after playing Colonization.

The setting made me enjoy the game more than real world style games because I find it easier to become immersed in something completely crafted and different rather than the highschool history lessons you get in civ style games.
There's just something about conquering the world with the Iroquois... If Lum stops by, maybe he can dig up that link from EU2. Awesome stuff, and I bow before the player's skill, I never got that far (euros always squash me hard + religion).

I played a game once where I tried to destroy and corrupt the planet as best I could. That bastard rock fights dirty.

I played the original Civilization for years, but have been disappointed with the new versions.  I don't care much for customizable battle pieces and so on.  I enjoyed the building/exploring aspect more than the warring aspect.  Always hated the battle AI.  Triremes beating battleships? C'mon.

Despite that, I bought Civ III, eagerly installed it, started playing on normal or average or whatever setting.

When a tank got beaten by a couple of phalanxes, I quit and uninstalled it.  I still hate the AI.

Colonization was very interesting, but it lacked .... something for me, I still don't know what.

RR Tycoon was great.  Enjoyed the second one of those as much as the first.

SMAC was just Civ updated in space, wasn't it?  Pretty much, anyway.

Pirates (original) was fun; haven't tried the new versions because I hate most new versions.  I want a better game in a new version, not the same game with better graphics and sound.  I want more stuff to do, a deeper AI, more diplomacy, more things to discover.

Take it from someone who dearly loved the original- the new version is fantastic. Just picked it up and played it again a couple nights ago. Do yourself a solid and pick it up.

I love the new version of Pirates as well. I played a map where I spent my time doing nothing but building armies and converting towns to my country of selection, then bumping them up with immigrants and governors. Prosperous Capitals everywhere! This btw, also makes for great trade options if you like that.

That sounds like fun. Closest I came to that was trying to plant forest over my entire continent. Take that, fungi!
