The archer AI is mysterious to me; sometimes they're really responsive (like, the thralls around my house will shoot at a mob sneaking up behind me that I didn't even know about), and sometimes they just don't notice anything even if it's right in front of them.  Having eight of them seems to drastically increase the odds of at least one of them locking on, though.  I think at one point I had three of them shooting at once.

If anyone wants to take a whirl at upgrading their equipment be my guest.  Right now I have snake arrows on half and fire arrows on the other half.

Do they run out of arrows or throwing axes?

Doesn't appear that way.

Technically you don't even have to give them arrows.

They shoot flint arrows if you don't give them anything, but if you equip another arrow onto their bow they'll shoot an infinite supply of those.

If you want to be really cheesy you can manipulate them into shooting them into walls and then pick them up for yourself.

Which is why the throwing axes thing works. The attack rate with axes is higher and the damage per hit is like double that of the best bow/arrow combination.

And black ice throwing axes are dirt cheap (provided you don't get punted off the forge platform and land on Mr Lonely Dragon).

The salt lake turns out to be a much more convenient brimstone source than the caves, as long as you have a map room and a sandstorm mask.  It's a very short hike from the turquoise obelisk, and you can mine the stalagmites for a couple thousand brimstone in one trip.  Just need a mask for the gas (and a pointy stick for the rocknoses).

I like the cave because it gets me skins to make tar, since my biggest need for brimstone is steel fire

Apparently you can get tar (and leather) by putting the animal heads into the tannery.

We swamp dwellers don't need to go to any particular trouble to find croc hides.  My standard iron mining spots are lousy with 'em.

Use your cleaver or axe to harvest. Unless they've nerfed something recently you will just about always get a head from each kill -- sometimes two.

Skinning knife never harvests a head, in my experience.

Do you get enough tar from heads to make up for getting less hide with an axe vs a knife?

You get the same tar as you'd get from a hide, but with the cleaver/hatchet, you usually also get some kind of meat. Raw pork is the tits, because just cooking it on the campfire gives you something that lasts 8 hours.

I have like 400 lobster ready to be harvested at any moment. That lasts for 20 hours with just a campfire and it is "high quality" food.

True, lobsters are good duration food too. I've found that Aloe Soup is one of the best food deals - it does double regen, and slakes both hunger and thirst. Make a bunch of it and put it in a preservation box with some ice, it will last forever.

Thanks for the tip for Aloe soup. Like Chimpy above I've been pretty much living on seafood, and wouldn't mind a change....

It's one of those recipes that requires a stove and for you to find one of the Specialist Cooking recipes (Specialist Cooking II) in a really out of the way place.
