I saw a sneak preview last night and as a service to all of you out there i must tell you to avoid seeing this movie in the theatre or even rental.  it was just that bad, i really cant get into much detail being at work but not only can it not stand on its own two legs, when compared to the first it actually tarnishes any memory of the good horror movie the first one was.

save yourself 8 dollars or better yet go watch constantine again.

The first one wasn't very good, but it scared the living crap out of me.  Evil little girls do that.  Memories from The Exorcist, probably.

I'm not seeing this one if it's the best film in the world, because I like being able to sleep at night.  That being said, I'm really not expecting it to be the best film in the world.  The first one had a number of plot holes and, overall, was pretty mediocre.  It's rare that a sequel to a mediocre film is even remotely good.

The plot isn't remotely the same as The Ring 2 in Japan or Spiral in Korea. I'm going to go see it for compare and contrast reasons. And because I'm a whore for the whole Ring world.

That last sentence confused the hell out of me for a brief instant.

They made a Ringworld movie?  What?

Apologies. I should have called it The Ring Cycle. Which is what it is affectionately known as, though the term was developed just to address Ring 0, Ringu, and Ring 2 in Japan. Here's the full list of movies:

Movies:
Ringu (1998/Japan) - Original. One of the finest horror movies ever made. Anywhere.
Rasen(1998/Japan) - A seperate movie made that the same time as Ringu. Closer to the book. Not as good.
Ring 2 (1999/Japan) - Some very, VERY clever seens. Pretty much shite.
Ring 0 (2000/Japan) - Surprisingly good. Prequel > Sequel. I figured it would be crap like Ring 2. Completely proven wrong.
Ring Virus (1999/Korea) - Total Shite.
The Ring (2002/USA) - Not as good as Ringu. Death sequences changed, as well as many other things to appeal to American Audiences.
The Ring 2 (2005/USA) - No reason to believe it will be any more than a guilty pleasure.

TV Shows:
Ring Complete (1995/Japan) - Complete and Utter Shite. Also called Ring: Kanzenban.
Ring: The Final Chapter (1999/Japan) - Oh my god. Make it stop. Also called Ring: Saishuushou
Rasen: The Series (1999/Japan) - Oh, wait, look at that. They do know how to make a good TV show. No wacky alternative names here.

Interesting.  I'll have to look for the Japanese original.  My wife and I liked the Ring but we both agreed it could have been done better.  Come to find out, it has!

Also, I feel pretty confident in assuming that you (Schild) have seen The Eye?  The one made by those Thai brothers.  That is one of the scariest movies I have ever seen.  I literally wanted to flee the theater.

Supposedly they were going to do a train wreck of a remake for American audiences starring Tom Cruise.

Witty banter not included.

Yes. It's fantastic. Also, Ju-On (The original Grudge) is very good. Oh, and there's a Korean movie called "Phone" that is truly goddamn scary. Here's the cover:

Yes, they are. I don't know how bad it will be, but it's a story that translates better than some of the other shit we've come up with.

I got too terribly pissed off at the first (american) Ring movie to view the second. The instant I figured out the show was about chain letters, my brain stormed out of the theater.

Nobody makes freaky ghosts like the Japanese.  The elevator scene in The Eye... <shudder>.  Also, effective sound usage.  You can hear the slight murmuring, just like you probably hear in your own house at night and wonder "Did I really hear that?"  And then it does what we're always afraid of in that situation: the murmuring gets really loud and there's no friggin doubt about it, YOU HEARD THAT.  OH SHIT.

If I'm hearing murmuring in my house at night I'm packing up and moving. That night. I've seen to many horror movies to stay when the voice tells me to get out!

Two days ago I finished reading the original novel by Koji Suzuki (Ring). I'm going to move onto the other 2 in the trilogy, but first I watched Ring 0: Birthday and Ringu again.

Ring 0 basically covers a very short part of the novel in an interesting straight thriller way. There's no real horror and the movie is setup to lead straight into Ringu. They removed integral parts of the story that I'd never caught on to as I was only interested in the Ring Cycle in movie/tv form. I should've bee-lined for the book. It's truly art.

Now Ringu - not even like the book. I mean basic premise, sure. There's a video and a curse. Lift the curse and you're a winner. Fail to lift the curse and you die in 7 days. Also there's a little girl. And Heihachiro Ikuma. But really, everyone's role plays out differently and the lead is a man instead of a woman...I'd go on but there's just too many differences. They are wildly different experiences and both very scary in their own way.

I would suggest - if you haven't investigated either - to watch Ring 0: Birthday and Ringu before reading the book. Then read the original book, Ring, and the sequel Spiral. Then watch The Ring 2 and the tv show if you can get hold of it. Following the TV show, I would suggest watching the American Ringu, the new short called Rings (which I've yet to pick up, but I know where it is in the book and what story they're telling), and then go see Ring 2 in theaters. I've a good feeling if you really aren't a true fan of the series, this new Ring sucks total balls. This is true of many movies that are the 5th and 6th in a series.

I, for one, eat this shit up with an ice cream scooper. It's an interesting occultish alternate reality and some of the more existential shit they ponder is magnificent. If you can stomach Asian cinema (I know some people get ridiculously bored), this is definately a series worth your time. I can comfortably say I've gotten as much enjoyment out of the full cycle as I have Indiana Jones or Godfather or any of the other great sagas.

The girl is much scarier than the exorcist girl. And that scene is pretty frightening the first time you see it. It's worth noting that's the japanese one. American one is less scary, a lot less scary.

I want that talk show in America.

Yeah, I've seen Ringu. I just couldn't think of a better caption for that clip :-D
