Yeah, from what you described it sounds like they prepped the show for HBO/ Showtime who passed and it wound-up on basic cable. After the first season that should have been resolved and the tone should have changed.

Just found a Reddit thread that said it was originally made for Showcase Canada, which explains the odd censorship. They're cleaning it up to meet the standards they'd use.

No.  That is refuted later down in the thread you link.  From wiki, they pitched it to Fox first before Syfy gave it the go ahead.

Magicians is trying to push boundaries, but stay in the envelope of what its typical viewer (younger teens, man-child neckbeards) finds acceptable.

I suppose this is the bit that I don't really get - I'm not sure exactly what SyFy are trying to achieve with this show and it feels almost as if one group of people commissioned it and another group of people subsequently decided there was too much swearing in it. Which is entirely possible, if not probable of course. I just find myself struggling with the idea of someone who was OK with all the jism and shagging and murder but wasn't OK with the word 'fuck'.

"Fuck" (and cunt) are both considered much harsher swear words in the US.  Breaking Bad, for instance, famously only got to use "fuck" once a season.  There just isn't any room for nuance with the words when you are trying to push things passed the censor/channel, while violence/shagging/fluids you have some argument room.  Another funny one is "pussy".  You can use pussy to refer to someone as a wimp or coward, but not as slang for female genitalia.

It might be an artistic choice that doesn't work for you as well.   Chappelle Show uncensored is much less funny than Chappelle censored.  It was written assuming things would be bleeped.  When you actually leave the swear words in it can come off as pointlessly crass.  Stewart's Daily Show would occassionally use bleeped expletives hilariously.  I'm sure it would just sound juvenile if they had just given Stewart a quota of f-bombs to use each season.

I think it all comes down to just avoiding things that will set off a helicopter soccer mom who happens to wander into the room for five minutes while the tv show is playing.

At the end of the day I'd notice it less if the show was better.  Still, I've watched worse.  awesome, for real

I just watched Ascension (SyFy miniseries on Netflix). Features Tricia Helfer in a very BSG-style role.

Really enjoyed it. There's a deflating twist early on, and it ends on a cliffhanger and was discontinued - but stick with it because it's worth having seen. There's a campaign for Netflix to revive it, given that they have it in their lineup.

As all the key players in the series have moved on, it is unlikely to return.  I enjoyed it as well, for the most part.

2020 will be the year I gave up all hope.

Yeah, I watched it recently as well and was disappointed to find out it was killed.  Still worth watching, IMO.
