I imagine the response to Kinect has scared MS somewhat but man I can't wait for MS to develop the balls to just start taking random pictures when its on for market research; then use facial recognition technology or something to blur out faces so it REALLY isn't invading your privacy guys!

So as of right now, what do you, the unwashed masses of F13, plan to buy, if anything?
Maybe a Steambox. I would have gotten a PS4 for sure if it'd had backward compatibility. Not being able to replace my PS3 completely makes it much less appealing, and the monthly fee for multiplayer even less so -- I don't play console games often enough to justify a monthly fee, but at the same time, a modern gaming system that can't do multiplayer is garbage. So fuck 'em.

I plan on buying a PS4. I'm considering pre-ordering from Amazon because I'm sure as fuck not waiting in line for a console, but TBH there's not going to be shit when either console launches.

Probably a new video card for my HTPC - $4-500 will buy a beast of a video card once nVidia and AMD get their next-gen hardware out.

"Holiday 2013". Amazon has it down as December 31, 2013. My guess is 1st or 2nd week in December. Xbox One is expected in November 2013. Edit: whoops 2013 not 2014

Sure. The list of "launch window" titles looks pretty underwhelming so far, which is usually the case.

Yeah, I just preordered it on Amazon myself. They are not even taking my money now, so why not? Also, I am not fooling anybody: I know that Christmas coming I will want to have it right away.

So now the word on the interweb-street is Sony's whole presentation was just nothing but misdirection, market speak since they are allowing publishers to set their own DRM. I guess for the next 5 months, it is going to be nothing but bickering back and forth between Xbone rabid fans and Sony Acolytes.

DRM infrastructure costs money.

It's a complete fabrication that MS is pushing. Some of the rabid XBO defense posts I've seen on GAF and PA have left me absolutely convinced they are astro-turf accounts to shill for MS.
Sony's stance is exactly the same as on the PS3 currently. Publishers right now can set their own DRM if they want - they don't for a huge variety of reasons.
Publishers didn't want the DRM in the next gen, it was Ms who pushed that. Activision of all people seem to be the most reluctant to adopt it out of the big companies.
How anyone can spin the exact same set-up as we currently have right now as a downside is beyond me. Confirmed fuck-up on one hand, confirmed continuation of the current policies on the other and some-how this is a bad thing?

If we do buy anything, it'll be a WiiU first because children. I imagine if there's a new Okami or Mario [Brawl|Kart|Party|Galaxy] that'll help. Almost a dead certainty if there's a followup to Xenoblade.
If I do buy another console, it'll be a PS4. I haven't bought an xbox/PS ever, so I don't know how likely that is. I mainly game on the PC still.

If the Wii U can pull off some of the third party games it has now and coming down the pipe well, it'll bring on more people. Hell, I'm willing to buy DE:HR again for the Wii U just for the changes they're making to support the Wii U Pad and the non-outsourced boss battles

If you watch this segment at 1:57:17 (doesn't get to the right time mark from preview. Open it in a different tab) you can probably tell that rumor is internet bullshit. Sure, corporate people lie, but I think they've gone all out on this and the backlash for such a blatant lie on this senstive topic would be too big.

Yeah, it's just confusion due to the mention of DRM being up to the publishers, which sounds like what Microsoft was saying about it being up to the publishers to choose whether to use Xbox One's DRM infrastructure or not. In this case Sony is just saying any DRM of that kind is entirely up to the publisher to decide upon and implement with no assistance from Sony. Bad wording, though, and I'm sure it will be clarified.

Done with consoles for the foreseeable future. I had a PS3 this gen and liked it, but I don't think I used it enough to justify continuing with consoles.
Still I think Sony is definitely doing a very good job so far. The response has been so one-sided I almost wonder if MS will swallow some crow and step back from being so anti-consumer before launch.

There's generally not much point in buying a console unless there are specific exclusive titles you're interested in.
You can get decent streaming boxes for $100 or less if you just want streaming video, and a PC (either standalone or living room friendly) gives pretty awesome coverage of gaming these days. And if you're just going to install Windows+Stream+GPUDriver, it's pretty painless and doesn't require much administration.

I had zero interest for any of the consoles, but Destiny, Division and the new FF are interesting. I'd have to see how shitty those online games are before I even think about it.

Microsoft sill probably react like they always do to those kind of blow ups, an avalanche of money in marketing followed by a name change of the product if that doesn't work. Only then will they actually reverse course, or more likely pretend they were on that course from the very beginning.

Thank dog some good games are actually in the pipe. Destiny, BF 4 & Division all look fantastic. FF 15 should be great for a laff too. And KH 3, about fucking time. 2013 has been so shitty for games I was honestly thinking I might be tried of the medium. Good to be excited about something again. But until winter: HEX. HEX. HEX. Also: Nintendo just needs to shut up and make 3 games a year for the other consoles.

I guess if a Red Dead Redemption type game that I decide I must play comes out with no PC version - like RDR still doesn't have to this day - then I might be more inclined to think about it enough to pick one or the other.

I think we watched a different video. This looked like BF3 with a map that merged Close Quarters and Metro into one big map and the reinsertion of the Commander mode from BF2 only it's on a tablet now.

That Battlefield video is archetypal console shooter. Lots of visual noise and chaos with opportunities to spam shots at shadowy figures. I guess if a Red Dead Redemption type game that I decide I must play comes out with no PC version - like RDR still doesn't have to this day
I keep reading rumors that this is a product of the RDR code-base being a disaster bound together by spit and sticky-tape that makes porting way too much work. Not that they are a particularly enthusiastic PC publisher though, so it could also be lack of interest.
