I stumbled over a shard that offers 97-98 UO only. Its all pre T2A. If you have any interest the web site is... http://www.uorebirth.comI like it so far, but I know most of you are already playing some of the newer games. Just thought I would give a heads up.

Hello Fede. I plan on making a post on F13.net... It is a huge gaming community and they are looking for games to play. If I don't fuck it up, we could get a crap ton of players to join. So, someone draft me up a post and I will put it there. I guess Kinto should draft it unless you want me to just say "Pre T2A" spew. Come on fellows, let's get a crap ton of guys from our huge gaming community and have at! After all, we're always looking for games to play!

Nice detective work... uh, wait. What exactly is wrong with somebody with 50+ posts under his belts pointing us towards a MMOG-shard he personally enjoys and posts about on their forums? I personally couldn't care less, but some people like these shards. This place has a bunch). I'd recommend the one called Pangea - I haven't tried it, but the guy who used to run it had some good ideas and a nice demeanor (and the shard running from his living room).

I have recently been reeled into the world of: http://www.uogamers.comIt is a bit brutal, but it's the closest I've gone to the 97-98-99 UO experience. I am using a program called Razor to launch the client, it has a lot of cool features similar to UOAssist. I don't particularly enjoy getting murdered whenever I walk 15 feet away from a moongate, but then again, c'est la vie. I'll be killing them back soon enough. What would I have to do to play on such a shard? I wasn't able to play UO back in its heyday, and by the time I was able to get into MMO's I had EQ....though I do have some kinda burned copy of a UO client someone gave me to play on some DnD-themed shard.

I tried a player shard recently and the UO interface and gameplay is just outdated to the point of being ridiculous. It was horribly frustrating to play - the jerky NSEW movement, the horrid inventory management, etc. I have fond memories of Wolfenstein3D, but those go out the fucking window if I actually play it again.

All mine are of running from PKs or dying and getting corpse looted from them. Of course I went in thinking I was going to be playing an Ultima like game and virtue and honor and all that would matter.

For those of you who had questions or were interested in UO Gamers, here's some tidbits:
--The world map is set up POST T2A / PRE RENAISSANCE (tram/fel). In other words, there is no "mirror" of Carebear and PVP. It's just 1 map... open PVP... adventure at your own risk.
--You can mark skills and stats RAISE, LOWER, or LOCK. The skill cap is 700. The stat cap is 225; HOWEVER, you can have more than 100 of a given stat (ex: 110 INT, 100 STR, 15 DEX).
--There are treasure maps and MiB's
--They brought back precasting... biyotches.
--Skills raise INSANELY fast. You can GM just about anything in one sitting. Stats raise equally fast.
--There is lag, occasionally. But you're not paying anything so get over youself. There are also occasional "world saves" which take 30 sec or so.
--Delucia has a dueling pit. There are also poker tables. There seem to be GM events going on every night, actually.
I'm not a PVPer, but this is a definite PVP-geared server. The fact that I'm still having fun regardless of that fact should say something.

Of course I went in thinking I was going to be playing an Ultima like game and virtue and honor and all that would matter. a) you suck b) there were communities which rewarded playing more like the ultimas, just no quest npc with an exlamation point over his head to point the way. You had to go explore that dark dangerous land and find things on your own. Some people prefer that, some people prefer playing an adult game that makes you think about what you're doing instead of riding an e ticket attraction like a mindless zombie with a credit card. I'm hugely adamant against grief play and pking, I don't wear rosy glasses, I remember quite well how it was back then. Sure, there was a bad element that caused a lot of havok, but it was only on the fringes or in spots to lure in dumb newbies. Ah well, think what you want, what the fuck do I care? I'm just glad I got to play it for a few years before it got all fagged up with homos who couldn't lean hide or recall or to defend themselves. --They brought back precasting... biyotches. That's too bad, that was a shitty bug. I'd check this out if it weren't a rehash of a game I played for over three years...five years ago...

You must have not encountered the bad element I was a part of. The second you stepped outside guard zones, you were fair game. We also tended to patrol player cities and had a series of runes for clearing out every dungeon except the stupid one with the drakes. It was prevalent, pervasive, and persistent. Of course, there were only so many of us and so much land, so your adventuring was pretty much like a roll of the dice. At any given time we could come rolling through a gate (note, usually in hidden areas). Hiding.. pfff, your only chance was to constantly hit your "all names" macro and hit your recall macro the second you spot a red name or you risk getting bowled over by some guy in a dress wearing a dear hat (it was a phase). I can understand the complaints. It wasn't that much on the fringes. It was pretty much "in your face" unless you spent all of your waking hours playing fashion model at the Brit bank. The person I was then enjoyed it. It was immensely challenging, tense, and absolutely unforgiving. It was lord of flies on a mass scale where you could keep some goon named Shiznit D'Ourden paralyzed for 15 minutes in front of Covetous. I'm not sure the person I am now would enjoy it. I like my guard to be completely down nowadays while partaking in these games.

Get to the part where you were quelled by the mighty forces of... PLAYER JUSTICE! Surely that happened. Every old-days apologist I meet talks about it. Bunches of honest players grew tired of your antics and smashed you, which then somehow kept you from just killing everyone the next day, right? :-D

The fact that names didn't have to be unique in UO made this all the more likely.

Actually I was an anti-pk for a while until I realized most of them were as bad or worse than 'regular' pks. But yeah, if I saw reds, I was dropping a gate for some friends to come visit, not to get away ;)
As far as that bit about hiding, it worked 100% unless the pk was using a hack. Saved my bacon many times when nobody was on ICQ to come join the party on my side. And recalling, when I say recall, I was a bit obsessive about recalling, so I'd have runes to several good spots on me at any time, when attacked, I'd recall...but I'd only be about a screen away, try to catch the kids in a mistake and pick them off slowly and whatnot, or at least observe for a bit.
I dunno, I don't think I was that great a UO player, I didn't abuse the bugs (fourzorz hally or precasating or whatnotziznatch). But I never had a problem with pks, and as I often mention, I played on Siege Perilous with a noncombat character and didn't have a problem getting pked there, either. Maybe it's because I "got" UO and played smart? Honestly, I don't know. It's not because I was playing away from the action, I was an admitted UO catass, I was playing at least 6 hrs/day, full ICQ list, etc.

when attacked, I'd recall...but I'd only be about a screen away, try to catch the kids in a mistake and pick them off slowly and whatnot, or at least observe for a bit. Obviously the UO team didn't forsee the asshat PK problem, and more importantly neither did the rest of the players. People signed on for a large-scale Ultima RPG and instead got persistent deathmatching vs Rasix and his army of dress-wearing friends. Now some of them, like you, were okay with that. But given the way the game was pitched, it's not hard to see where all the bitching and eventual changes came from. I didn't have a problem getting PKed during my own Siege experience either. Any time I wanted to get PKed, I just walked out of town and let it happen. No problem. :-D But no, seriously, it was pretty easy to avoid getting whacked more than once per day or two. The problem was, running evasion tactics and replacing all my junk after the occasional failure was consuming way too much of my gametime. blarg i am teh stupid Yes, you are. And expect a nice quoting of Rasix's initial post to this thread, next time you jump into one of mine to spread your Dread Lord-era "player justice" historical revisionism.

Any time I wanted to get PKed, I just walked out of town and let it happen. This is pretty funny for me. I must've had a magical pk repellent in the same way you must've had a magical pk attractant. I think I may have been pk'd a grand total of five times in the 6-8 months I played on SP...as a character with zero offensive skill, no combat skills, no magic. One of those was the only time I was caught in a pk guild's dungeon (Shame, GC or FjP or some tards like those guys iirc), I used to constantly head in there to mess with them..and then stealth out with as much treasure as I could carry without being overloaded (because I couldn't recall out, remember: no magic). You really had to make your own fun and interact a lot with others, I can see how some might balk at that, given the popularity of handholding in mmorpgs lately and the general reaction when Morrowind was released: "but...what do I do now?!?" Some people are simply followers, I guess, and need orders, otherwise they are lost. And I'm being very honest when I say I'm interested in why I didn't have a pk problem playing UO on some servers that were supposedly rife with them, because I used to play a hell of a lot. The problem was, running evasion tactics and replacing all my junk after the occasional failure was consuming way too much of my gametime.
I dunno, evasion was part of the game imo...as long as you had a plan and weren't just tucking your tail and running from teh big bad pk. As I said, my evasion was usually a stalling tactic to call in support, or to flank and pick off stragglers. Replacing stuff...the UO economy was filled with basic adventuring gear, most people I knew just hit a vendor and bought a new kit, or recalled to their house and grabbed a new kit and used their library of runes to go right back into the action a few minutes later. That's why the thing that pissed me off most was the inability to rekey a house. With pks, at least you had a bevy of options for dealing with them, but once your house was compromised, there was nothing you could do.

Too bad your avg gamer is too much of a spoiled brat to realize this and instead they all whined untill all interesting open pvp had been wiped out of the mainstream. Oh and if you mention LineageII I'm going to barf, that game's grind made me want to drop a nuke on Korea and I was playing on a 5x xp/item drop server...
