Went to see it tonight. Good parts- Younger looking gods (not your stereotypical guys with white air and beards) and Zues was a total bad ass. Fight choreography was really nice Cinematography was amazing. The scenes and back drops were all very "300" like in scope. A very "pretty" movie. Bad Parts- Titans were all grey clone like monsterish humanoids? WTF? The sound levels were really off. During quite a few voice over dialogs people in the theater were all turning to friends "WTF did she just say?" It was really noticeable in some parts. A little to heavy on the action and to light on the story telling, you could tell it came from a graphic novel, in comparison to "300" which IMO struck a good balance between action and story. Over all opinion: meh, I give it 3 out of 5 stars. If you have a big screen TV at home just watch it there. The ending made it obvious there will be a sequel.

It had some interesting takes on the Theseus legend (like the Minotaur in the Labarynth fight) and such, but somehow I just found it lacking in comparison to 300. Possibly something with the way the narrative in the movie flowed. Also, a few bits here and there totally threw me off (see spoiler), and at least one scene completely broke the immersion for me.
3/5 is probably a pretty good score. Good popcorn flick, with an interesting take on greek legend. It is also surprisingly brutal in a lot of spots.

As am I, which is why I was disappointed. Greek mythology and hero epics usually have amazing stories. Where as this movie tended to slide toward the PvP actiony side of things.

I dunno, Immortals just felt a bit more epic, artistic, and more original than 300 did. Obviously a lot of this has to do with the mythology aspect, but it translates well into the style. The use of small points-of-interest (sets) and making them pop into larger than life vistas really worked for the cinematography imo, at points making me just say "wow, that's beautiful." Even my gf was impressed and she's a fairly bourgeois artsy person.
Worth the watching just for the visuals. The story is familiar, but what fantasy movie isnt really? I felt the delivery was more than adequate and original enough.

It's actually pretty clever: Everything that happened is a propaganda story told by the guy with one eye at the end, who Leonidas sent back after the first day, to get the Greeks riled up for the definitive battle with the Persians. The film version added all of the bad Sparta politics stuff with Leonidas' wife. So basically the movie is jingoistic propaganda.

I don't know. I'm sort of on the opposite side. I thought 300 was far more epic, artistic and interesting then Immortals. I view 300 much the way Johny Cee describes it. It is a glorified telling of a legend in the makeing. A story time session of Heroes, doing heroic deeds, in an awesome way, meant to inspire men heading into battle. Sort of like listening to some old timer tell tales about all the crazy shit Davy Crocket was supposed to have done. In contrast, Immortals just felt off to me. Sure, there were heroic deeds done, but it just didnt flow right, and didnt jive with what i know about Greek history / legends.I think my biggest problem stems more from how little I actually know about the Theseus legends, other then the Minotaur stuff.

I'd say it was more of a 2/5 movie (a lot of the movie looks nice at least). Worse than being a really bad movie, it was just really dull and a pain to slog through. I don't know why people are trying to judge whether or not it was a better movie than 300 when it wasn't even better than the Clash of the Titans remake. In fact Immortals made me look back a little more fondly on Clash of the Titans which at least had some personality to it. Even a lot of Immortal's fight scenes just felt completely sterile, particularly whenever Theseus would go into his slow motion slideshow "kill a buncha guys with a spear" mode.

jingoistic propaganda. Everybody’s been too damn polite about this nonsense: The “Occupy” movement, whether displaying itself on Wall Street or in the streets of Oakland (which has, with unspeakable cowardice, embraced it) is anything but an exercise of our blessed First Amendment. “Occupy” is nothing but a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness. These clowns can do nothing but harm America. “Occupy” is nothing short of a clumsy, poorly-expressed attempt at anarchy, to the extent that the “movement” – HAH! Some “movement”, except if the word “bowel” is attached - is anything more than an ugly fashion statement by a bunch of iPhone, iPad wielding spoiled brats who should stop getting in the way of working people and find jobs for themselves. This is no popular uprising. This is garbage. And goodness knows they’re spewing their garbage – both politically and physically – every which way they can find. Wake up, pond scum. America is at war against a ruthless enemy. Maybe, between bouts of self-pity and all the other tasty tidbits of narcissism you’ve been served up in your sheltered, comfy little worlds, you’ve heard terms like al-Qaeda and Islamicism. And this enemy of mine — not of yours, apparently - must be getting a dark chuckle, if not an outright horselaugh - out of your vain, childish, self-destructive spectacle. In the name of decency, go home to your parents, you losers. Go back to your mommas’ basements and play with your Lords Of Warcraft. Or better yet, enlist for the real thing. Maybe our military could whip some of you into shape. They might not let you babies keep your iPhones, though. Try to soldier on. Schmucks. FM

Yeah I almost went there in my review (it being worse than Clash of the Titans) but was throwing the movie a bone. But you're right though, it is.

My impression has been that the previews try to paint Immortals as an action movie but it's not really one. Action sequences are somewhat rare. As far as being artistic, IMO it's an artistic exploration of S&M with all the torture and sex depicted.

Disagree. I love 3D, when it is done well (Ie, the movie is shot / directed from the ground up with 3D in mind (Like Avatar). 3D for the sake of saying "look, our movie is in 3D", with the express purpose so they can wave pointy objects in the audience's face and make shit zoom around for effect can go fuck right off however.

And, for even representation, I neither hate nor love 3D as I can't see 3D.

I didn't even notice the 3D in this movie this weekend and paid $29 for two tickets. I am skipping 3D showings for a while. The movie had some shiny but I thought it was flat in the delivery. I am also a Greek mythology buff and they butchered the fuck out of that part. I would say it edged out Clash of the Titans but half a star.
