I just saw the end of the original a few weeks ago when it was on Encore. I wouldn't say it was all that good unless you're looking for a campy romp that doesn't quite take itself seriously but acts like it is. Maybe the rest of the movie is different but the last 20 mins or so made me laugh more than fear.

Fright Night was supposed to make you laugh. It was meant to be campy fun. The grimdark take on the new one makes me think the producers really just didn't get the original and didn't want to make the effort to come up with a really new story not connected to an existing (though old) IP. David Tennant's presence is really the only thing I look forward to in this one.

I'm not sure if I can adequately describe it but I'll give it a try.
It's dark. I don't just mean in tone, I mean the whole thing is filmed very murkily with lots of shadows, lots of cold tones and a generally oppressive feeling. It also seems to be trying for a "realistic" approach to things, which at times becomes almost mechanistic. We have to explain why things are the way they are instead of just taking somethings as accepted and moving on.
The original was pure camp. It was a bright, funny, silly movie that never took itself too seriously. Most of the trailers I've seen (which show absolutely no David Tennant which is part of the problem, IMO) are focused on Farrell's vamp doing scary vamp things and almost nothing on humor. Had the trailers shown more of Tennant's character, who really looks to be where most of the good humor is going to come from, it might not have looked so grimdark to me.
It's almost like watching the difference between the Adam West Batman and Joel Schumacher's Batman. Neither one could be considered good movies, but at least the Adam West didn't take itself seriously.

I just recently watched the original fright night (and fright night 2), its a fun movie but not intentially funny or "campy" considering its an 80s movie made in the 80s. Its almost trippy in some scenes, but i never got a sense of "oh that's cute, you silly vampire bill you". That one super annoying best friend was trying his darnest to be cute and adorable in a screepy screech (save by the bell) way. It felt a little like terminator actually without the grim dark robots from the skull crushing nuclear wasteland future attempting to kill you and your unborn baby. You move a near unstoppable killing machine next door to the one teenager whose favorite show is about a vampire hunter and you have plenty of fun, but not, in my opinion going out of its way to be a campy film.

Yep, that was her. I loved the original, and have to sit and watch it every time it shows up on Encore. Caught the sequel for the first time since it came out recently and was less impressed. Girlfriend was MUCH hotter in that one though  Does the remake have a Peter Vincent equivalent? He was what made the first one so fun. |

Yeah, they picked up the last Dr. Who, David Tennant, to be the updated Peter Vincent. Pretty inspired choice. I have issues with Fright Night being seen as camp though. Fright Night always presents itself seriously and goes out of its way to make non-believers into victims (Evil Ed & Amy) or parodies of themselves (Peter Vincent). The ones who understand the danger have all the power, or a chance of survival, just like any good horror movie (see also: The Lost Boys). The closest that Fright Night comes to camp is by pulling an Inception and labeling itself after Peter Vincent's show but then it turns all that on its head. Fright Night I & II work as accessible horror or horror lite rather than campy flicks. Campy movies are either crafted with incompetence, dwell too much on self-parody, or include a broad mix of both. Fright Night manages to avoid that stuff. Curse of the Cannibal Confederates is Pure & Dirty Camp, but please, for all that is Unholy, don't label my beloved Fright Night in such a way. Okay, I'm a lunatic for caring this much, but there you have it. The originals have everything. T&A, gore, reluctant heroes, suburban paranoia, 80s music that still works , hazy atmosphere, great camerawork. And it's written well. The new one looks like it's using the same formula, but much slicker. I'm gonna miss the 80s soundtrack though. I could only be more excited if this remake was set in the 80s. |

I'm just going to assume that people are watching a different trailer than the one I saw, or that humor means something different than I remember it meaning.
I have to agree with Heamish. If I didn't already know what Fright Night was, I would assume that it was a serious vampire flick.

Hmm not really. He wasn't played up for laughs. Peter Vincent Vampire Hunter is a total johnny cage type character without any of the inherent douchery or total confidence in his hollywood "skills". He is all sympathy. If anyone was camping up the movie it with Evil Ed, but I blame that on the setting being the 80s and needing a obligatory douchy obnoxious friend whose all sarcastic geek hipster (before we had hispters) and in bad need of a muzzle. |

My take was that the movie was trying for something similar to what American Werewolf in London did - horror with laughs (though Fright Night leans much farther toward comedy).
I don't know how anyone could watch the dance sequence in Fright Night 1985 and not acknowledge that they were aiming for a degree of camp.

I put it in line with The Gate and The Lost Boys. It's horror lite. It's not scary, but doesn't try to be corny either. Campy stuff to me is Critters or parts of Night of the Creeps. The Troll movies.

I saw this on Friday and enjoyed it lots. Nicely balanced on the funny/scary scale. I can see how some people might mistake it for a "serious" horror movie, but I laughed my ass off.

Here's a pretty sweet (and recent) interview with Tom Holland in which he says one of his influences for the original was Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. There's some real gems in there for only ten minutes of time.
