Well, with the Dynamic Combat thing, it turns out that story mode is an Omega farm of stunning proportions. Going through with my Thing I've gotten something like 20 points in the first chapter.

Story mode is the fastest way to level since they changed it a while back, so adding mob xp on top of quest xp  would totally rock.  Nice.

Can you do story quests after the first run through?  I've never gone back and checked. Side quests are there but I don't know about story.

Checked on the only character I did most of the story with, whatever you've done is done. You may be able to use that story reset thing Clea sells. I know that stops the big rewards you've already gotten - bonus ability points, bonus health/spirit - but I'm not sure how it affects XP.

Finally figured Nova out. He's surprisingly strong and about the only "movement" character I enjoy.

Does anyone know if Strange got an overhaul?  His multi bar playstyle was the only bad thing about him.

Not yet, but they're reworking everyone in the big update which should hit TC sometime this month.

That was my thought. It has to be everyone, though, after reading the link. They're pulling a WoW WOTLK with power points and adding-in a talent/ perk system. No way to do that without overhauling everyone and all systems at once.

At least it sounds cool, and it might make some horrible unplayed characters like human torch worth bringing out.

Taking a quick look, they essentially switched from the Diablo 2 system to the Diablo 3 system, with a set of equally powerful abilities modified by the equivalent of runes.  Should we be surprised it took them this long to catch up with blizzard?

Good way of putting it, but no they're not catching-up. The system worked well and was liked by the players for a long time. I certainly enjoyed it. I imagine the impetus for change is that the original designer has moved on and the playerbase has stagnated. If they'd started with this system at launch they'd be doing something else to try and get people interested again. It's not like the game has expansion packs to do it with.

They're also updating items (bye-bye Uniques, hello Omega Items) and the Omega system is becoming Infinity (D3 Paragon system by the looks of it) so the comparisons to Diablo aren't that unfounded.  There's also a fair bit of speculation among the community that this is the first step towards a console port.  Nothing official on that AFAIK but the simplification of builds down to 8 powers/1 bar would certainly fit.

Second iteration went up on TC sometime yesterday.  Haven't looked into the hero updates this time around but since they haven't budged even an inch on the mobility changes (and it doesn't look like they're going to) I don't feel much inclined to either.

Quote
  • All Dash Powers now have a fixed distance and travel speed, uniform across all heroes.
  • “Dash” Powers (such as Combat Rolls, Lunges, Teleports, and Charges) have 3 charges and generate a charge every 4 seconds.
  • Teleports still begin their travel instantly, but move across the world at the same rate of Dashes rather than disappearing from one location and instantly reappearing at the next. They are comparable in distance per second to any other Dash Power.
  • Dash Powers now cleanse crowd control effects, and make the user completely invulnerable while travelling.
  • Travel Powers have a 1-second channel time before they start.
  • Travel Powers reduced in speed from 1000 to 700.

The mobility was one of the biggest selling points of this game, it made going back to any other action RPG feel slow and plodding.

If the TC forums for the previous build are anything to go by then it seems most people, myself included, agree.  The entire place was in flames once people got to actually test the changes out for themselves.

Gaz posted a thread asking for feedback on the changes and received a massively negative backlash.  Then they posted a statement which basically said "Thanks for your feedback.  The mechanical changes are not up for discussion but we may change the numbers a bit.  Please continue to give us feedback."  At which point a lot of people basically said "Fuck it, I'm done!"

Really it looks like they've milked the PC whales for as much as they can at this stage and are willing to burn all their bridges in an attempt to make a shitty console version.

I'm actually on board with most of the changes (not that my opinion counts for much since I don't really play anymore). There's still a decent amount of mobility and I like having to think a little more tactically about positioning. Also, the notes that were quoted are overstating things a bit: Every hero's basic dash is uniform in range/speed, but movement-based heroes may have advanced dash powers (on separate charge cooldowns) with different properties or talents that allow them to restore charges early, etc.

The teleports that have been turned into dashes feel awful, though. They should just let teleports be instant and compensate with a 0.5s longer CD or something, if that's what it takes.

If you think of the heroes that have instant teleports, you know why they NEED instant teleports.

Fuck knows what mockery this makes of an already mocked Nightcrawler, for example.

Most of the heroes with teleport do not need them to survive:

Do need:
Doctor Strange
Nightcrawler
Scarlet Witch

Don't need:
Deadpool
Doom
Elektra
Kitty Pryde (not actually a teleport but effectively acts as one)
Loki
Magik
Rogue (if stolen)
Silver Surfer
Vision (if low density mode)

Not sure:
Cable (haven't played him)

Nightcrawler isn't so bad. Blink Strike lets him bamf to enemies pretty much at will and he has a secondary teleport move with five charges that gets you halfway across Midtown in a second or two, plus one or two other teleports on short cooldowns. His starter tp/dash is, as I mentioned, pretty awful. But at least he is now undoubtedly the most mobile character in the game, which wasn't really true before.

Even if, like me, you really want to wait for the big update, logging in during the holidays to both get all the free gifts and the INSANE drop and XP rate is well worth it.

There's been a lot of good changes since I last played also.  Finding out I no longer have to swap out Midtown every five levels was a joy.
