I've begun creating a monster processing machine. It involves lots of water, and for some reason it apparently once shit out a music disc. That amused and perplexed me a bit.

How would one make such a thing?

Alot of videos about them floating about. Basically you build a long shaft or dark chamber or whatever with water flows that drown monsters as they spawn and whatnot.

This is a decent video explaining basic princple behind them, and why and how they work. It does not need to be like it is in the video at all mind you, this guy made this with "pvp" in mind. There are much better designs out there, but I don't know of any videos that explain the concepts better off the top of my head.

1.9 looks really interesting. Once they get the bugs out. Some things people have discoverd so far:

They remind me of: Beast Master Vore

Hoping they mean in multiplayer? Because need to pause single player or it will end up getting a lot less playtime given how things have been the last couple months.

You could never pause multiplayer. Just keep in mind this is a pre-release somethings could be disabled for testing. I would take the entire thing as a WIP and subject to change ( With enough complaints )

Music discs are sometimes dropped when creepers are killed by skeletons. Skeletons shooting other monsters will actually cause them to fight each other, but it is kind of tricky to get the drop to happen because if the creeper just goes and explodes on the skeleton it won't drop.

You can also find them in treasure chests occasionally, they can be played in a jukebox.

Yeah, right. People won't pay for production value. I like how shaders are one of the selling points, not content.

I watched that entire video waiting for a fortress, or some form of mob invasion, or anything different.

How is he claiming that's not just a straight minecraft rip? Whee, it has better textures. Excuse me while I go play minecraft with a high def texture pack?

Hitting Escape pauses the game for me in SP in 1.9.

Watching the video for those two Minecraft clones, it occurs to me they really don't get the appeal of Minecraft.
It isn't their game so to speak. They know how to code, look at Minecraft, and say, oh, we could code something like that. Then totally miss all the small things that makes Minecraft what it is.

One minor up side to doing this is that they made a million goddamn dollars.

I can't speak to the quality of any of these games, but I do wonder how much cash Minecraft is missing out on with this indefinite beta model they're using.  Other titles seem to be scooping him before the game is even "officially" released.

Also seems a bit weird to me that there hasn't been much reaction to this game from the AAA studios.  WoW makes a million dollars, it's "QUICK, everyone make a game EXACTLY LIKE IT, I'm sure it'll be easy" but an indie studio rakes in millions with a dev team I could fit in my bathroom, and suddenly everyone's too busy remaking Snake Rattle 'n Roll as a visceral first person shooter to clone it.

Finding a few pockets of diamond: awesome. Then dying to a gajillion spiders deep in an abandoned mine built by someone obsessed with labyrinths.

The thing that bummed me out was that I was being quite conservative and methodical. I had opened a small hole to deal with a spider spawner in an adjacent passage and got caught in a web which for some reason wouldn't break with my iron sword. Then jumped by at least three spiders I couldn't hit. Turned and faced the wall, couldn't break a block to get a step back into my safe room. Then, my bad, hadn't slept in the entry room to the labyrinthine mine so spawned back in my village tower.

Yep. Not a carbon copy at all. I can't help but wonder if there are too many similarities. I mean, he has the same tools, the same blocks, the same block look, the same type of environment, the same types of blocks. Literally everything except the addition of your own light source, speedboots, jetpack and things like that, is literally carbon copied from minecraft.

This guy is going on and on about how it would have to be stolen code or whatnot before Notch could sue, but I'm not convinced he's right. I'm not a lawyer (unlike what this guy is claiming to be working towards), but I would assume that there are a few too many similarities for this to go unnoticed if Notch were to take action.

Copyright-wise I think he's probably correct that he's in the clear with only being 'inspired' by Minecraft. If Notch were a friend of pouring money into lawyers I think trademark law would be a more promising weapon, since Fortresscraft is a very similiar product under a very similiar name to a very well established name in the genre. Same reason you'd find it hard to market your new brown softdrink as 'Koke' even if the recipe was entirely your own work.

The only thing I'm getting out of that statement is that Bethesda has a shittonne of really, really bored lawyers.

Yeah, I'm not hardcore in the least :)

Learned how to make signs and I'm trying to work out a better way of exploring, clearing and marking this abandoned mineyrinth. Unfortunately, I had most of the diamonds on me when I got stuck in that invulnerable web of cheese death. Just want to be prepared next time, and all the rails I'm pulling out of there should make it easier to get my transportation system booted up.

Also started a mountaintop observatory as a side project when I get tired of spelunking. It's across a lake from my village, at the beginning of this amazing river gorge surrounded by mountainous cliffs. Unfortunately, though I built a little dock with a door, my boat keeps disappearing!

Boats. You think that you've parked them and that they won't move. The next thing you know, your boat has floated out into the middle of the lake. It's a good thing they're cheap.

How does it work when players on a multiplayer server have different versions of minecraft?

I don't want to update in case I screw something up.  (I haven't even logged into my 1.7 single player with my 1.8 .jar).

These new changes sound awesome.

Thanks, but:

Good point, I've been slacking on that front!

For the boat, I made a little dock, x=stone, o=water, d=door

xxxxxxx
xooooo
xooood
xxxxxxx

Door traps it in, since the boat needs two spaces to fit through. I could try another door. I had been way down in the mine, so I just figured it had disappeared when the chunk unloaded, not sure how that tech works (for instance, my huge population of sheep and cows disappeared one night when I came out of the mine, too). I was headed to the lake for a crossing just before I logged out, so didn't take time to see if it had floated around a corner or something.

They have to match of course. 1.8's can only connect to 1.8 server. If you don't match, you can't log in. Single player, I don't think it matters, really old worlds will be converted, new ones will simply lack any new "terrain" features with the exception of newly generated areas.

You can always back up your minecraft.jar (or your MC appdata folder entirely) if you want to revert.

I know you can log into servers with a higher version number than you (I logged into a 1.8.1 server with 1.8), but I dunno how far back you can go. If you are running 1.9, though, and try to log into a 1.8 server, it'll spit out an "outdated server" error.

For boats I usually just make a little inlet that water flows into, that holds the boat in place.
