I'm not disputing that. I was just saying, its been solved ever since minecraft started gaining traction. There are what....4-5 clones now, and counting. Its in every mag, every publication and has had about eleventybillion documents writing about such systems.

You cant throw a dart and not hit something minecraft now.

I'm not making a direct comparison between DF and Minecraft. That's insane and, frankly, overdone, since everyone immediately went OMG DWARF FORTRESS BUT 3D once Minecraft released. But I do think you can compare the way they succeeded and how the communities work, even though Minecraft is several magnitudes bigger at this point.

I'm certain there are clones of Minecraft. That's not the question. It's whether someone can monetize it better than the Minecraft guys can. I don't think that's going to happen. What, another basement studio of three dudes is going to peel off 15k Minecraft users? Maybe four or five of those studios? The only people that are going to make a marketable, massive Minecraft that becomes The Next Big Thing (as it relates to everyday gamers) are studios that aren't interested in touching Minecraft style games with a ten foot pole.

It never happened. Suits don't think that way. Most studios of more than ten people don't think that way. It's never going to happen, ever, because it's not a platformer, not a MMO, not a war simulation FPS, not a RTS.

Same thing with Minecraft. Never going to happen. 10, 15 years ago? Absolutely. The industry's not the same.

Dwarf fortress is a completely different type of game.  As in, the AI and interactions in DF is massively complex, and attempting to replicate the technical and non-technical aspects of DF is pretty complicated.  Minecraft on the other hand is more of a technical complexity of dealing with the randomization, storage, and memory requirements of the system but the core idea is pretty easy to map out and enhance in your own direction.

Dwarf Fortress is just a really neckbeardy Sims when you get down to it. I think someone could make the case.

EDIT: Well that got all fucked up, I hope I'm still quoting the right person.

I get what you're saying and I think it's in reply to me. I compare it more to Spore due to the world generation and the march of civilization over time taking place in the background. But yeah, there's a ton of The Sims in there, too.

I don't want to get too far afield from my main point, though. I think there's a huge untapped market for DF and Minecraft, different as they are. They're sandboxes. But to reach that full potential, it's going to take a real studio with a real publisher and real money behind it; those studios rarely take chances or do labors of love anymore. Two million copies for Minecraft is just fucking huge. Toady living off his donations for DF is just as huge in its own way given what a (glorious) mess the game is.

If I had the people around me with a really good AI programmer, I'd pull the trigger on a mass market DF clone tomorrow.

I agree, and it makes me sad that they decided to to take Valve's offer (unless Valve only gave an insultingly low offer).  Valve knows how to handle the business sense, has a track record of leaving people in charge of products they purchase, they know fun(tm), and have a lot of amazing resources to help realize the full potential of a product.

I'm not sure if true sandbox games like this make sense for larger studios.  Minecraft is definitely proof you can build up a nice following, and hell, with a small team that's interested in building and sustaining a sandbox game business you can do it with a much smaller userbace.  But if you start putting AAA title type resources on something like this, I think you're going to have trouble making that money back.

A friend of mine, recently having left gamesdev, observed that the market is really brutal for midsize studios right now.  1-3 people shops can build stuff and survive, and the AAA stuff still manages to happen, but 10-50 person shops have an awful hard time making ends meet and have been imploding like crazy in recent years.

Why does someone have to monetize it to mess over Notch's business?   Frankly I'd suspect an open source project is more likely to steam roll him pretty soon.   I'd go so far to say that Notch is damn lucky he chose to use Java actually.   If Minecraft didn't run in Linux it would of been full feature cloned a lonnggg time ago.

Awesome, many mods are now using Ads in them with popups.

I guess thats one reason not to have a secure mod system :/

I noticed that for SSP mods on the main minecraft forum alot of coders were using ad.fly to host the links for their downloads. So hearing this isn't surprising.

There was a decent mod called Skylands that was out a few months back, my kid and I tinkered with it a bit.  Gets fun when sand/gravel start shifting... just walking across areas will cause a fall.  Hope he picks some things from that mod.

He fixed most of the bugs on the wiki page, but refuses to understand how important the community is and continues to ignore extremely popular mods. He hasn't made any significant progress on any sort of API nor does he seem to think it's a priority. Instead of embracing major mod creators, he has made it extremely difficult and unrewarding to try and add much needed functionality to the base game. People try anyway, but a lot of them are getting burned out at this point.

I'm shelving my interest in minecraft for another few months, because the changes between last time I played and now (in multiplayer, the only way to play) are just a few additional blocks. Hell, nether portals STILL don't work in multi.
