None of these updates will make it into SMP eh?

SMP was prematurely released because of someone leaking it. The plan is for the Single Player Survival to be reflected in the MP, but that wasn't supposed to happen for a bit longer. Now there's some crazy expectation for Notch to update SMP to be exactly like SP.

There will be fixes to SMP and features, but he hasn't given an exact list. My assumption is that he'll get in what he can but his focus is on SP to get all the people bitching about updates to shut up.

Torches HAVE to run out because that currently is the only real reason to "farm" flint/steel.  Logic dictates that he wouldnt have coded in flint/steel (and the masses of flint ore) w/o a reason to need it, i.e. shit to relight.  Personally, I think it's a smart move...  it adds multiple game AND farming mechanics that will yield fun and tension.

So..you it needs to be a mechanic because...a mechanic was made for it?  Like I said, I don't get my fun in minecraft out of farming of game mechanics, I get it from building stuff and exploring randomly.  Insofar as I can still do those two things without having to jump through hoops or waste lots of time on other stuff, I'm good.

So... now you can build stuff to light stuff and explore for more flint, steel, and components to build lanterns.   Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Although I'm on another server, I'm pretty proud of my latest project:

It will depend on what goes into lanterns.  Having torches use coal and wood, which are both very plentiful resources, and craftable without a bench, works pretty well as is; you can get a big stack of logs and be set for a long time in the mines. If lanterns need glass, for example, you'll need to venture pretty far from your mine to get the sand needed for them, and then wait to smelt the sand to glass, making it more of a chore to keep your mine lit.   If lanterns require resources that are more difficult to get (like iron), the size of the mine needed to get the iron for lanterns might exceed the amount that you can light with those lanterns, meaning that you'll need to light the mine with torches and run around constantly to keep them all lit if you don't want monsters spawning behind you and killing you as you dig.  Again, it's just adding another chore.

I'm hoping that it turns out lanterns are about as easy to craft as torches are, and torches just get even easier.

Thanks everyone, the above tips have definitely helped, I managed to make it away from the spawn area ... I fell into some nicely excavated underground area though ... I guess I need to check the Cartographer map and find a nice untouched area to begin my work ...

How did you end up in here anyways, Slay point you this direction? :)  depending what you are looking for if you go across the big bridge and find Bat town you can find lots of good space a little beyond.  I explored a little beyond dong mountain and it was all open space, found a really big cave system I got lost in for a bit.  I think I markered where I came out with a high pillar with a torch on it......damnit, a torch that is likely to go out in upcoming patches.

This.  I settled just outside of Bat Town, if that's what it's called.  I'm just a bit west of the  awesome, for real face.  Lots of nice open land.  And now I know what that giant pillar is from.   Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

EDIT:  I hate that I have started playing this game.  I've been playing it so much I've almost been neglecting the other aspects of life. :(

EDIT AGAIN:  Is the F13 server eventually going to be just like single player survival only multiplayer?

That's the plan, but nobody knows when Notch will get it up to par with Single Player.

I'd like him to fix minecarts and boats before fucking with monsters, honestly.  And mybe implement teleporters like some mods have.  Exponential growth needs exponential travel options.  (Hell level is a neat twist)

What's the current list of caveats on the multiplayer server?  I've been fucking around in Alpha to get a handle on the game before joining the f13 server -- what knowledge won't carry over?

Hmm...  No monsters is the big one.  Minecarts make the server extremely pissy, so don't build them...boats the same, but not as bad I think.

Was there something about inventories and furnaces and chests not working?  Or is that fixed now?  What about water/lava flow?

Doesn't not placing water and lava sources prohibit the obsidian farming stuff that I've seen screenshots of (which I thought were taken on the f13 server)?  I feel like there's some nuance there I'm missing.

Maybe I'll just wait until the performance issues are all fixed and I don't have to worry about accidentally asploding the machine.  tongue

You don't want to make too much flowing water/lava from what I gather, so no big intricate fountains.  If you want to make lakes or whatever with water there are tricks to making the water 'still'.  It doesn't seem as high a priority in server stability though as other things like minecarts/boats as I do see plenty of fountains around.

Obsidian farming is fine as the water becomes still once you're done creating the obsidian. And obviously the lava becomes obsidian.

Big props to Logain (comp86 on the server) for giving me a set of diamond tools and taking Roentgen and I on a wild tour of some of his projects. Very impressive!

Can we get a Cartographer map update? I'd like to see some of my work from space. :) Thanks.

Err, as I understood you weren't to place water or lave sources to grief, not that you weren't ever to place them?  Did I read something wrong?

I may have placed a few lava flows...

I'll clean up the server rules and add in performance rules too. The issue we had was that some people were creating massive amounts of change in water flow (Read: Blowing huge fucking holes in the sea) to which we made a rule not to do that. I'll go into detail with the updated post.

Hence the reason why I scrapped my 1:1 scale model of Seaquest:DSV (I'd have to flood an area half the size of the 1:1 enterprise pit).  Now I think I'll just make a skyway across the entire map.  Fuck terrestrial roads.

Hmm...so if I just pick a direction and keeping going and going and going will the map next time have one really long tendril that throws off the image being somewhat even?  awesome, for real

I'd really, really been resisting this as I have had no spare time at all. But there's a break in my work schedule, so I finally set it up to play Alpha yesterday.

Fast forward to 2am. I finally quit after making my first diamond tools, clearing a big area near bedrock, and building a minifortress above ground. Already mulling over anti-creeper defenses and thinking ahead to bigger projects. My daughter's been watching this morning (home from school with a stomach bug) and she was chomping at the bit to take over by the time I left for work.

One thing that occurs to me right away: the MMOG devs who've said with near-religious fervor that nobody wants sandboxes, sandboxes can't work anyway, etc.? Seriously, consider another line of work.

I, for one, and glad this is not an MMO.   There is no reason to make 1000 people servers, small multiplayer environments are frankly superior for this kind of game.  My point being, MMOGs just don't bring that much to the table anymore.  Oh boy, lots of people logged in at once, but due to hardware limitations you can only play with a few at a time anyway.  Skip the middle man and just give me a solid mul;tiplayer game.

I think MineCraft could use something like MMO-style auction houses, on which X private servers are aggregated. The physical worlds would still be seperated, but the commerce would benefit a lot from having more actors. There's not a great need right now, but still.

Big truth. I too am hopelessly sucked in to this game. I'm spending every free minute on the f13 server (and some minutes I should probably be spending on other things!) mining, exploring, building, wandering around in awe of other's creations. Tonight when I get home from work I'm going to play some more single player survival (as I like that aspect a lot too, will be interesting to see the MP Survival a little more fleshed out) ... hopefully I remember to eat.

I want to turn my daughter on to it as well but I don't know if I want to do it during the school year. She lives with her mom most of the year in Georgia, I keep having visions of VNCing to her PC and finding her crafting signs and tools far, far past her bedtime.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Best $13 USD I've spent in a long, long time.

Really? To me that's a dream that took a very rational approach to how he would see her playing the game. Creepy would be him having a dream travelling 1000 miles and staring through a 3rd floor window to find out.

Creepy? It's my daughter. She's 800 miles away. I need to be able to work on her PC, be able to take control and demonstrate things to her ... and, as she's 10 years old, a child ... use it to keep various tabs on her... It's password protected, it's not like anyone scanning ports can just waltz right in.

VNC and a webcam are two invaluable tools if you don't live near your child.
