This is maybe my second favorite toy of all time. Or game. It's sort of both a game and a toy.  I thought I was done with having a game capture my thoughts when I wasn't playing it, until I tried Minecraft.

Single player is fun, but multi even more so, because you can wander around and look at other people's stuff, or make things with other people, or drop a bunch of chickens in someone's basement.

The thing I love the most about minecraft is how it doesn't have anywhere near the level of graphics which seems to be "required" by most blockbusters these days, and it's still wildly popular.

Here’s the development snapshot of week 7, 2012! List of changes:

Added new world file format called “Anvil” (256 max height and 4096 block IDs*)
Multi-player light calculations do no longer cause affected blocks to be transmitted to the clients, instead the clients will recalculate the light on their own
Villagers will repopulate villages based on how many houses there are available
Some nights in villages will be worse than others…
    Added a redstone-controlled light source
Decreased chance for the rare mob drops
All animals use the new AI system now

* The game can’t use the full range of IDs yet because there are still some assumptions that IDs above 256 are items.

Update! New version number is 12w07b, fixing the following problems:

Crash bug corrupting levels when spawning mobs above the 255th block
Sheep animation is correct in SMP

New light source is apparently "Lamps".

Can we increase villages by building new houses? why so serious?

One would assume. I assume they are looking for block patterns and item ID's like doors.

Also, I  believe that villagers will be invaded by zombies.

The post-release development makes me happy.

Also, I was on last night! I did miss the hordes of sheep from my SSP, had to make a bed out of spiderwebs  ACK!

Messed around with Painterly, ye gods that takes a long time to set up. Still need to go back and tweak about ten things, but it is a nice change of pace.

Ah poo. A bit disappointed by the "Lamp". I was hoping for a Blockland LAMP, not a block.

Yeah, I was thinking lamp not block. Hopefully setting up the basis of a redstone-controlled light source plus all the new block slots available will lead to a bunch of new lighting options.

So the Minecraft LEGO set is priced and available for pre-order. It's a clever little set, but it's more of a collector's item that you build and display on a desk shelf than a real thing you'd disassemble after a while and circulate the parts into your LEGO bin.

The box is cute though.

Ok, as I try to update texture packs. This change also allows you to have a "Natural" light stone texture ( where the current is on the sheet ) and a new set of off/on textures for a crafted lamp. So, that's a plus.

Oh my god, buy it Murdoc. Unless you're really cash strapped, it's an amazing game/world/toy/thing. You should probably do a bit of SSP (survival single player) to learn the basics and then jump into the server. The biggest difference is that everyone has to jump in bed at the same time (not the same bed, weirdo) to make night pass. So there's a lot more monsters hanging around.

I should be back on the f13 server soonish. Just kinda kicking around on my SSP world as I mentioned in the forum. But that gets old pretty quick, nice to be on the server.

Ok, I finally got into this. Why did it take me so long to buy it!?

I've spent too many late nights hollowing out a mountain side to build my fortress on. This game is way too good and I still don't even know what I'm doing yet.

Have you tried the internet? It's made out of millions of people missing the point of everything and then getting angry about it

Also, http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki

I've been plinking away at an underwater rail station, but it's a pain in the ass. Then I decided to build a mine at bedrock under my service room for said new station and apparently it's in the middle of a lava sea. Topped by a mine full of creepers. Mine closed!

There is, sort of. You can enchant a helm item to slow the air bubbles. Combine that with aqua affinity so you can mine as fast as you do on the surface.

For lava, there are immunity potions.

That's an opportunity: build platforms just below lava sea ceiling, lure creepers up there, use as impromptu explosives to let the seawater turn all the lava into obsidian.

Pro Tip: Do not just stack a bunch of bookshelves around your enchant table. It will just make the range higher, meaning you have to keep cycling more for common enchants  ( 1-15 ish ). Build two or more tables, each with varying numbers of bookshelves, save yourself some grief and time.

If you just make an enchant table, You can get low cost enchants. Adding bookshelves will raise the range and cost of enchants ( low level ones will still appear, but you have increased the range, so you have to keep inserting and removing the item to cycle the enchants and costs. ).

I don't really like the enchanting system; variable enchants + moonspeak is just a huge turnoff. I'd try to find a mod for it but I use IC/BC/EE and can do better with those than anything I'd get from 'chanting.

Its English if you change the image in the texture pack, but its still somewhat gibberish.

Interview with Jon Kagstrom

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Mojang's resident AI guru, Jon Kagstrom, to ask some questions about the highly anticipated 1.2 update. Here's what he had to say!

Sach: There have been a lot of features added in recent snapshots (more advanced Testificate behavior, smarter mobs etc) that seem to indicate a wide range of potential for the future of hostile and non-hostile NPCs going forward - what are some of your plans for that?

Jon: My primary task at the moment is to improve mobs (animals+monsters+npcs) to do that I first move them to a new AI platform. Once a mob has been moved it's really easy to add new behaviors without breaking existing ones. This is when the fun starts. What I find really interesting is emergent behaviors from only a few lines of code. For example the villager children playing tag or the dynamic when zombies break doors and villagers are fleeing in random directions. There is no overhead "invade village behavior" it's all a mixture of smaller reusable behavior modules. Another interesting aspect is the emotional relationship the player builds up with mobs. It's worse to see a villager child being eaten by a zombie than a grown, so you want to protect the little ones. Also I really like small subtle behaviors that doesn't necessarily add something concrete to the game but only atmosphere, like the new Iron Golem giving a rose to the children in a village.

Cats and creepers have an interesting dynamic in regards to how they behave with each other - will there be similar "quirks" or relationships between other NPC/mobs in the future?

Yes, in the future we will definitely see more mob interactions, not only between the player and the mob but also between mobs, we want the world to feel alive and dynamic. In Minecraft you can basically build anything and I like the idea of having an adapting dynamic population as well. Next step might be some kind of trading with the villagers now that they are getting some life. So you have a good reason to keep them happy by protecting them from monsters. But Jens and I haven't really planned any details yet.

There are now a wide variety of diverse biomes, with the jungle being the most recent addition - and it has biome-specific life! Will there be any alterations going forward for certain biomes to be preferred homes for pigs, cows...even certain monsters?

Yes probably, nothing is planned but as we update mobs this is considered.

There definitely needs to be trading. I hate having stacks of redstone or bread that I know will take me forever to get through when I just need some more wool or dye.
