falling damage will suck, especially if you have to run more than 5 minutes to get to where you died...

Shift does not always work!  Especially when you're walking along placing blocks and it goes 'look, there is a block here!' and you crawl onto it and then lag says 'wait, maybe not' and then you fall and as you look up, you see the block say 'no really, here I am!' and you hit the ground.

I jump down to the bottom of my mine all the time, its part of what I love about MP.  He's not allowed to fix that, or the durability bug.

I installed a ladder in my mine vent, just in case.  Perhaps ironically, installing a vent is a great way to fall or be crushed or drowned.

I'm sure we'll keep falling damage turned off on the server or at least have it toned way down. Right?

If he doesn't add a server variable for it, we have to rely on a mod, which are a pain in the ass in the first place.

Guys, don't wuss out.

Those of us who have been playing since the beginning (or close to the beginning in my case I suppose), remember what falling damage and dying was like, and damned if it wasn't annoying, removing falling damage, or breaking it as it were, made the game better in my opinion.

I remember falling damage, and it hurts at a shorter distance than you may think.  If falling damage had been enabled when I was building my... whatever it was, Azimuth Walkway?  Sure, that's a good name... anyway, it would have been time consuming to die and run back from spawn.  Likewise, my inability to drown allowed me to dry out the inside of my tower on the lake much faster.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

Not drowning saved me from the Wrath of Trippy last night.  Since I was digging around a natural cavern and it sprung a leak which then led to a partial seabed collapse which then led to many more leaks.  And while watching the multiple waterfalls was quite pretty, I suspect it may not have been the best thing for the server.

Plugging all the leaks was a crazy amount of fun though.

Bah, kids.  In my day, we died falling down the hill, both ways, in a single snowy biome, and we liked it.

We seem to have bigger issues:
Quote from: Notch
I’m definitely going to add hardcore mode to the game where dying will destroy the world. I’m not sure how it would work in multiplayer, though.. Perhaps you could get “banned” from the server until the world resets if you die on a server running hardcore mode.

awesome, for real

Hardcore mode doesn't sound terrible once you've already accepted the damage and death.  The key is that it turns from a sandbox (literally in some cases!) for building stuff, into a survival/adventure game where what you build actually has the purpose of keeping you safe.

Now, I like the sandbox/building part of the game better, but hardcore wouldn't really bother me once I was already playing the other way.  Then again, I play hardcore pretty much exclusively in games that have that mode, at least after I've beaten the game once.

Um. There goes my theory that Notch understands why people like sandboxes in a way that other developers don't.

Hes been saying for a while that he wants to add more "game" to Minecraft, this shouldn't be surprising really.  Its one of the things I like least about what he has been saying about it.

And I've been wanting there to be more game.   I think the lack of game context is its biggest weakness.

Same here.

Some of you are attached to an alpha version of a game that has not even checked off its list of initial features. You should know better!

But i do hope there is a robust set of options to customize servers. I just really hope the F13 one does not go all lego land with the rules. Id like a little zelda with my legos please!

I'm not super afraid of notch's plans. He appears to be for lots of gameplay options. I'm sure hardcore isn't going to be the only game mode.

He has Dungeon Mode on his list of things to do and I believe CTF or a MP variant of that.

He also has a large community of people who clearly have no idea what Alpha means and irrationally scream at him about everything.  I get the impression he likes messing with them in the blog and on twitter every now and again.

So far he seems to get that people enjoy multiple playstyles (online/offline/with-monsters/just-to-build/etc) and has stated that some kind of server plugin/customization system is part of what he considers needed for Beta.

I wouldn't mind there being more of a "game" if the game had a way to win. Adding more cockblocks to my building projects isn't going to make me feel like I'm winning.

Yeah, I don't want hardcore, falling damage I could also, I guess, not have. But I really want creatures and stuff, with out it, much of the game is not working. IMO.

I think my minecraft wishlist would be:
- more server/protocol performance work and/or a nice native C/C++ server -- something to allow a single server to reasonable handle 30-60 players
- working minecarts that don't destroy the server -- so many fun things to build
- serverside plugins so the community can worry about admin tools and different play modes and Mojang can worry about core gameplay

What I think could be really cool is his idea of portals being able to link servers, combined with perhaps per-server texture packs, etc.  You could build a pretty nifty collection of little virtual worlds that could be customized (custom textures, custom plugins to implement different games or play modes, etc).

Minecraft really hits a sweet spot with user created content -- simple tools that a child can start making stuff with in minutes, but lots of expressiveness possible.  Combine that with a bit more customization of look and gameplay and it becomes even cooler.

With MP at the moment all I really want is more stuff to build/buildwith and bug fixes.

Some time in the future when there are a lot more working features I look forward to a MP world with a much different playstyle, so that rather than everyone running to their own corner and playing lego it makes sense to actually secure the spawn and then carefully expand through teamwork through a hostile world, with some sort of meta achievements/goals available.  I have plenty of patience for this though, and this sort of server style will only compliment the free build peaceful style that should be available forever.
