I thought they were just booster rails and would only need a few stationed at certain intervals. Am I wrong?

Yeah you can copy stuff and bring it back later if you want. We're actually running a FRANKENMAP right now, where we took our original map, added some crap around the edges from our 2nd map that people wanted to keep, and added some generated dungeons to. The only real issue with Frankenmap, is the jarring zone boundaries. I've been smoothing* those out slowly to help break up the giant straight line. The Dungeons are actually really neat, very old school Zelda like. *Smoothing may or may not involve server ending numbers of TNT explosions.

Is the f13 server still a thing? or has everyone moved on to greener pastures? 1.5 came out today and the achievements are delightfully addictive.

I'll be back. Sounds like there's a lot of new toys to explore and I haven't minecrafted in far too long. Must finish Portal 2 first though.

Powered rails are awesome. Finally, minecart travel without the nonsense of boost bugs or coal-powered carts.

The question was whether you need every single section of track to be "powered" (and thereby use lots of gold), or if you can just place a few sections of powered rail to get the cart going and then let it coast on regular tracks.

Still pretty much need the old boosters to go up a long 45degree slope. I do love using the new booster tracks for starting points though. Butt the booster track up to a wall, wire a button to it that you can reach, put the cart down and hop in. Hitting tthe button activates the booster, and since you can only go one direction, you go that way. Only works at the end of a track though.

On level ground, one booster is good about every 20 or so tracks. You can go longer if you put two or three together at each boost. Up hill, you need a staggered climb, so you can intersperse boosters every couple elevations.

I'll definitely poke around once I get synced up with the same version as the server. I've been anxious to play in a shared sandbox, even if it's a lightly attended one.

Up hill, you need a staggered climb, so you can intersperse boosters every couple elevations. I think you can stretch that out more like 30 without any loss of speed, but I haven't done any real tests, just slapped a bunch down on a track and had at it.

F13 Server has no mobs ( Other than farm animals). I play on a friends server, and any long time F13 people are welcome if you are looking for a more challenging environment. In other news: Some hot fixes rolling out today, it appears the boosters can crash a server. Minecraft server beta 1.5_02 is out. A last minute tweak caused the biiig bug in 1.5_01, sorry. It's not required, but it's a good idea. Rails can crash servers in 1.5 Minecraft 1.5_01 is out, fixing a big pile of bugs Working on 1.5_01, fixing a few minor bugs, and one major crash bug (the new rail blocks cause an infinite loop)

Wipe the old map.
Also you can rename the "World" folder (on the server) so you can keep a copy of your old world on the chance you want to go back to it. When you fire the server software up again it'll just create a World folder and generate a new world.

Anyone have any recommendations on something to replace Cartographer that work with the new save file format? I found a page that listed some alternatives but there's just too many to choose from. I'd prefer something that did an isometric type view and let me choose which direction is North (flip/rotate in Cartographer).

I'll come back and mess around again when there's a map reset. Seeing the remains of my grand plan would be too much :)

Yeah I'm ready to come back as well when we start over. I built a football stadium the first time around, and I've got plans to build a baseball stadium in my head to celebrate the start of the season.

There's another version by a different guy. Cartographer G or something like that.

I use C10t ... it'll do isometric but I'm not sure if you can choose which direction is north.

The booster rails that Bzalthek put in are excellent. Now it only takes 7 minutes to get out to his castle to witness the insanity instead of 15.

Yep, they're quite nice for long distance travel ... they'll tide me over until Nether is implemented in SMP.

I'm absolutely loving the new rails, running back to the storage room from where I'm strip mining is much less onerous now that I carry a cart with me and just zip back

Ok, this is gonna sound pretty dumb. I logged onto the server, and was kind of poking around whatever I could find in the immediate area. I ended up falling down into some deep dark oubliette, and I have absolutely nothing in my inventory. Is there a suicide command, or am I stuck forever in the dark?

/home was removed, but /kill exists. Apparently beds now change your respawn point, but I haven't bothered dying to test it yet

Hi! It’s Monday, and we’ve got the day off for some reason. (Something about Easter) Me and ez took a short walk, and the weather was wonderful. :-D But that’s not what this blog post is about. It’s about dumping a bunch of random information on you!
First of all, Jens got temporarily moved to a new project, so I’m on my own on Minecraft for a while (not sure how long..). It feels scary, but he’s right across the desk from me. Thank you for your work so far, Jens, I know both the community and I really appreciate all your hard work. :-D
Jens was working on integrating/tweaking the Piston mod, which will probably get delayed as a result of this. We don’t want to just add it as-is because it doesn’t quite feel “fantasy” enough, and there’s a lot of corner cases we need to solve.
Last week, I started playing around with minimaps, and Vraket from Oxeye games took some interest in it. We played around with it for a while, and it kinda got more and more ambitious as we went. Now it’s a proper mapping tool! You make a map, and it starts out empty. As you move around, you fill in parts of the map automatically (as long as the map is being held). You can give the map to other people and they will see what you’ve explored on there, and it’s quite possible you will even be able to magically “link” two maps so they’re the same map. That means you will be able to see where other people who carry the same map are.
Vraket is a game design genius, btw.
One slightly bad news item is that I’m starting to get second thoughts about the modding API. People are already doing great mods, and there’s no way we’d be able to make an API good and dynamic enough to support all of the awesome things people are making. I still very much want modding to be a part of Minecraft, but I’m not convinced spending months writing an API that won’t satisfy people is the correct way to do so. There probably are better ways to do it. The main problems we need to solve are preventing people from making money off our work (unless they have a license deal with us), and making sure mods don’t break with each game update. People obviously already CAN make mods, so the ability to make them isn’t the biggest priority. Hmm.
Oh, oh, oh, and we also passed two million sales! That’s HUUGE, and as usual I’m not quite sure how to deal with it! We’ve got a company dinner planned for Thursday night, and I plan on getting Jakob drunk. That would be fun.
And [at some point in the near future], we’ve got our office house warming party! It’s a bit late since we moved in like half a year ago, but the renovations and new decorations should finally be done by then. The guest list is pretty long, but Carl assures us there’s room for everyone.
There’s one final piece of information that I’d love to share, but I’m not allowed to. I’ll just say I’m very excited about it :D
