Oh hey, it's the Duke Nukem Forever of FPS MMOs. What else could this week possibly have in store for us?

Edit: Way to use Radio buttons instead of toggles there, Ijji. undecided

Edit: Doesn't even matter, I don't do scheduled betas.

I watched a very lengthy video of beta gameplay of Huxley. The combat looked much like Unreal Tournament. Not very tactical and more about twitch. If I understand it correctly, this game is also heavily instanced, only allowing fights between 128vs128? Although I'm not sure at all on those numbers. You never really saw more than 3-4 guys on screen at once in the beta video, so 128 seems wrong somehow.

I don't know what else to say about the game. I'm personally not a huge fan of twitch based first person shooting.

That's a bit of a retarded statement.

Just because something is twitch, doesn't mean there isn't tactics involved.

The part in the vid where the stealth scout uses a rifle able to recharge a teammate's shields was super duper.

Yup!  JUST started, as in like 30 mins ago.  DLing now.  Had to make a new ijji account though because evidently my other one got hacked or just generally screwed up somehow.  For some reason, my login email was sent to an email i dont have.  (and I'm pretty sure no one used that name).

Meh.  Played it tonite.  I like the hardcore-ness of the stats and I enjoyed the twitch, but it's a pretty damned bland game.  A LOT opens up later on though, but unless you've got serious patience you'd probably /uninstall before then.  It's basically a persistent version of UT3 with quests and pvp battlefields.  Some of the elements arent explained very well from the get-go, but I'm hoping the Traning area solves that down the road.  In some ways they kinda ease you into the game too slowly.

One of the only beta tests i have gotten into where the beta acceptance emails are even bugged. From the ijji forums, seems people were accepted into beta but they didn't send out the email confirmations till days later. not to mention you have to sub to fileplanet to grab the beta client. time to fish a torrent out of the cesspools. good start to a beta test I'd say.

this is also the only times i got accepted to a beta test and was disappointed opening the email.

I read the other day that they've announced at E3 they are going the F2P with Micro-trans route and dropping  PC <-> Xbox 360 cross platform support for now.  I think they might be dropping 360 support altogether, as I'd have no idea how you'd handle a F2P + micro-trans for a console, free download from XBL and micro trans using MS points?

F2P would probably mean buy the box and no monthly sub. Getting rid of cross-platform servers is a smart move. Can't allow the halotards to know how hard they suck. Thumbslol.

I'm with Sky. This is a good move. And yea, XBL+mtx with MS Points is the way I'm sure they'd do it.

I'm curious if it was tech challenges or game play balancing that made them ditch PC-to-X360 cross-server play. I would guess the latter. When will publishers just come to terms that this is not something that is probably ever going to work for an FPS?

There's no way in hell this game would work on a Console unless they got it to work with one of these new-fangled motion controllers.  It's way too twitch and fast for that.  Not to mention, there be stats n' stuff for the console rtards to manage - which they never like.
Anyways, the F2P stuff is great news.  I was on the fence about this game, but I'd give it SERIOUS consideration if it were free.  Matter of fact, I'm gonna keep testing it since that's the case.  Free "Planetside?"  yes pls.

I just gotta get past the boredom of the training area.  Anyone moved on from there yet?  Is it any good?

Trying to create parity between a console/PC is fucking doomed for a FPS. Tell more about the game!

Hmm, the "I don't like twitch" comments are back. I picture some people moving around MMOGs with the arrow keys. Turn, tuuurn, tuuuuurn to face the quest NPC. Strafing? Never!

Regardless of whether Huxley turns out good or bad, I like it when FPS and MMOG mix. I'm nearing 40, so it's not about youth. I did play single-player RPGs and MUDs before there were commercial MMOGs, but like many people I'm also a FPS gamer. I saw many players go to EverQuest from the Quake and SubSpace communities (also the StarCraft RTS community actually). Developers have been rightly chasing MMOFPS nirvana from Planetside to Tabula Rasa and it will remain part of MMO gaming.

Not exactly sure how they are working this since there has been no official word on lifting the NDA. Of course that is par for the course for this operation.

As long as they're chasing it for the right audiences. Huxley is trying for the right audience imho. TR (and PS) were not. You don't try and convince a D&D player to go MMOFPS. You try and gauge more cash from the CoD player instead.

Not saying Huxley has a prayer in hell of capturing the true FPS crowd. But at least it's not trying to get some carve out of the stats-PvP crowd.

I wonder if the success of TF2 is going to soften up the FPS community to RPG elements.  Though, admittedly, the "hardcore" or "competitive" community seems to shun those parts of the game.

"Achivements", "persistent character development", etc. in games like TF2, and the CoD and BF series actually make it harder for games like Huxley to succeed. Why pay for character persistence when you get get the same thing in free-to-play FPSes? PlanetSide is about the scale, which Huxley doesn't duplicate, and is something some people will pay for since you won't find that in your normal online FPS. The "RPG"-aspects in PlanetSide actually did more harm than good to that game, IMO.
