I am bored and irritable because this just happened, so I am posting What are your biggest pet peeves? At Work or Home. So I work in a professional organization where I hear the following AT LEAST twice a day: Business: 1. "Irregardless" - Thats not a word people!! 2. "I could care less" - Really? So you could care more? Even though the point you are trying to make is that you do not care. /smack Personal: 1. People that say "whatever" in a debate... shows lack or preparation and/or intelligence 2. Slamming doors - not sure why but I hate that lol Edit - for those that consider inaccurate spelling a pet peeve :)

Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less Listen to the pronunciation of irregardless Pronunciation: \ˌir-i-ˈgärd-ləs\ Function: adverb Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless Date: circa 1912
nonstandard : regardless usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead. So basically the only reason it's not an accepted word is because people keep insisting it's not an accepted word. The english language is a fascinating and ever-changing entity. Stop being such an asshole and go with the flow.

So basically the only reason it's not an accepted word is because people keep insisting it's not an accepted word.
No, it's not an accepted word because it's a double negative. "Regardless" already means "without regard". "Irregardless" would mean "not without regard". If it meant anything at all. But people who use it almost invariably use it to mean "regardless". Because they're fucking mouth-breathers who stick prefixes onto words regardless of their meanings, hoping that if they can manage to squeeze out a four-syllable word now and then they might pass for someone with a grasp of the English language. God DAMN do I hate them.

Speaking of peavey one of my pet peeves is web administrators that don't set up a host record to allow for no www prefix. Good job http://peavey.com! It is even more special when the #1 google result for your company ( peavey) direct you to your website w/o using the www prefix which your dumb ass forgot to support. And you even get bonus points for making the title of your page "peavey.com" w/o the www prefix that you seem to feel is a requirement for your visitors. So this buds for you mr super duper web hoster man!

"Irregardless" is linguistics IN ACTION. It will be in your grandchildren's dictionary, if it isn't already in there.
That said, most of my big pet peeves are semantic. I especially hate people screwing up classifications: ape/monkey, bee/wasp, etc.

While we're on the subject of "words", here are two of my most hated:
Conversate - Converse is already a verb, asshole, you don't have to add "ate" to the end of it.
Ginormous - When you say this word, I get a strong urge to stab you in the eye with a pencil.

When someone makes something plural that IS NOT plural.
"I just bought some books at the Barnes & Nobles." What, you went to more than one of them or something?

Red eyes in photos.
People that slam doors in hotels.
People that complain about first or business class food on airplanes.
People that sit in reserved seats on trains.
The word "got" used constantly.
The phrase "it's all good" used to refer to anything other than food.
Birthday parties.

"Ain't" because a word irregardless of people saying it wasn't. I like ain't. It's the contraction that couldn't. See: You aren't = You are not. I ain't = I am not. Perfectly logical. But a hundred or two years ago, someone decided the first was ok and the second wasn't, and that we needed to say 'I'm not' instead. I almost dislike correcting students on it. Reverse pet peeve! I think we should say 'you was' instead of 'you were'. It'll never happen, but it'd be more logical with our current lexis. In old English we said 'thou was', then we starting using you for both the singular 'you' and the plural 'all of you'. But we didn't switch the auxiliary! I was - singular He/she/it was - singular they were - plural we were - plural you were - plural??? Not in the vast majority of use. Bah! Also, people chewing with their mouth open or smacking their gum, or even just eating loud and crunchy food, such as apples. RAGE.

Using "Literally" as a synonym for "Totally" or "Completely."
Like, "That literally blew my mind, man." No, it fucking didn't, or I'd be going for a mop right now. Or "I literally just wanted to punch her in the face." Uh, this is usually literal, I don't know of any way of figuratively punching someone in the face.

I never actually came across this one before the internet. In Australia, common use of the phrase is "I couldn't care less". The US version always looks wrong to me, becauuse as you say it doesn't make sense. Do they use one or the other in the UK?

People who use baby talk, even when talking to babies, it makes me want to puke.
