I don't know how suitable it is (never having played it myself), but the BioWare Sonic game was designed to be "my first RPG" (a fact which seems to have escaped the critics, who complained that it was too simple).

Well, at least they based their complaint on more than "It having Sonic." Which was enough for me to lose all interest.
