So apparently the game decided to fuck itself a few hours early, and I was waiting a little while to switch skills.

At least I'll have long range targeting 4 when it comes up..and only at least 20 hours wasted!

It seems like this happens to someone every time.  I was tempted to switch and try to sneak in a 2 hour skill before it went down, but I'm glad I didn't.

Witty banter not included.

I got back in before the DT and was able to switch to a long skill, but I was sweating for awhile there.

Weapon Upgrades 5

Been putting this off on one of my toons for far too long, now that he can fly a Recon (yeah I know priorities) I figured he needed HAC as well (and the short sprint to Adv Weapon Upgrades 4 won't hurt his fitting either)

It's sure nice to see that after all this time, they're still not able to finish in less time than their patch window.  DRILLING AND MANLINESS

this happened to me too....I thought I had at least another two hours.  Will CCP reimburse the lost sp?  somehow I think the answer is no, but I can't imagine a valid excuse why not

No, they won't reimburse any SP.

Long-term, this downtime-screw-up might have a positive effect, as now players will push for a skill queue even more.

Also, the server came back online about 20 minutes later, so there was a good window of opportunity to chance the skill train afterwards. At least, that is what their argument will be.

This comes up every time the server falls over, a bunch of people will shout that CCP is stealing their SPs and that they deserve an SP refund, you can search the EvE-O forums for the usual response to that if you can't guess what it is by yourself. Set a long skill and get on with your life, if you didn't manage to do that then you'll lose a day of training at most - not a big deal.

so I'm supposed to stare at evemon or spam logins?

and no, a day of training isn't a huge deal, but it's more the principal.... if you give us a time the server will go down, then stick to it. overshooting a finishing time is one thing, but starting early is just a pissoff...... what ticks me off about it isn't so much the SP as I just feel like ccp is flipping us the bird.

if they'd refund SP i'd at least feel like they were admitting to a mistake, but i don't think they believe they made a mistake, and even worse, i don't think they'd reimburse me even if they thought they had made a mistake

Chillax.  So you gambled on being able to change skills in a certain window (it was only down for 30-40 minutes) and lost a day's training.  So?  Next time you know to change the skill in advance.  This happened last time, too, and will almost certainly happen again.

(I'm assuming you lost skill traning time because that's a whole lot of rage and self-entitlement otherwise.)

 Heartbreak
didn't mean to come off that way. is it that wrong to get a little ticked  over getting snubbed like this? like i said, it's not the sp that i'm losing, it's that i'm 90% sure that ccp won't reimburse me for them, when i see it as their mistake.... just because it's happened before doesn't make it ok- in fact, it makes it worse, imo. I didn't see it as a gamble at all.... was i really that wrong to take ccp at their word? naive maybe, but not wrong

where's the sense of self-entitlement there?

They didn't start early, the server fell over. Then it came back up 30 minutes or so later as Endie said. They don't owe you anything except a word of apology for the interruption. Not your fault the server fell over but they don't owe you training time as a result.

even if they don't owe me, i don't see why they shouldn't just do it for a show of good faith.... they had a little mix up, some people lost sp because of it, why not just practice some good customer service? if i had lost a ship because of the server crash, hopefully they would have reimbursed it- don't see why it should be different for SP.

It just is different.

Good customer service in this case is saying 'We're sorry the server fell over, it's back up now and we've fixed whatever broke it so it won't happen again.' They haven't stolen your SPs from you. If you'd checked the forums you'd have found that it was an unexpected failure and not the patch starting early, so you could then have chosen to wait until the server restarted to change your skill if you cared that much about losing a day of training. If you didn't then that isn't their problem.

IainC- yeah but how is it different? I'm not saying they stole my SP, and when i opened my yap i didn't know that the servers came back up, but why not just do it as a gesture of good faith? what do they lose, and where's the slippery slope?

New guy, you're annoying.  You've written 7 posts bemoaning the loss of 50 cents worth of playtime, in a gamble that was pretty much your decision.  Like they say on the official forums (which these aren't), you can always rage!quit over it, and can we have your stuff.

Back in my Freelancer days we never reimbursed, neither for our screw-ups, nor for our players' screw-ups.
This policy treated everyone equally and proved the most fair approach.

Having said that, SP loss is a minor inconvenience compared to last year's boot.ini nuke.

Yeah, I didn't realize they were bringing down the server as early as they did for the patch.
