There is absolutely no way this game is ever getting made... by Interplay.

I love the fact that the website just shows off concept art that may have been done 5-10-15 years ago.

Just received an email with this link. Those of you who signed up for Fallout Online's newsletter will probably receive this link, or already have.

Dunno, I liked Harold's story.  It's Fallout... they should be trying too hard.

MMO Development. MMO development never changes.

Planetside-type game in the Fallout world.  That would be fun.  Making an online RPG with guns has all kinds of broken written on it.

I think you've got it.

What are the odds of getting a STALKER type MMO in the world of Fallout?

Digging this thread out again...

There's apparently been a settlement between Bethseda and Interplay.

No details yet, but soon, probably.

Side note: I like the abbreviation for Fallout Online as FOOL (on the Duck and Cover link). It just works.

Hmm, I think I like FOO better.

So the details of the settlement are out, and...

Interplay's lost the MMO to Bethsoft.

Quote
Bethesda announced that "under the terms of the settlement, the license granted to Interplay to develop the Fallout MMO is null and void, and all rights granted to Interplay to develop a Fallout MMO revert back to Bethesda, effective immediately."

Incidentally, Interplay's lost the rights to the Fallout back catalogue as well; they can continue to publish FO1, 2, and Tactics until Dec. 2013, at which point they fall under Bethsoft's purview.

I assume pretty much anyone on these forums who has ever had the slightest interest in Fallout probably owns the old games, but if you don't I'd probably GOG them up before their status there becomes iffy.

Other sources mention Bethesda agreed to give Interplay $2million, and each pays their own court costs.

The one guy I know at BGS is cheering, he thought it'd take a lot more to get Interplay to fuck off.

So can someone in the know give the full breakdown on this? I have a smart but doggedly pro-Interplay friend who's insisting this is an example of the Big Bad swinging its dick around at poor little Interplay.

I'm not in the know, but I thought the Interplay of today is not the same as the Interplay of old? As in, studio was bought up -> internal studios were shut down & staff laid off -> eventually Interplay itself was shut down and then re-born from the ashes or something. Or am I mistaken on that point?

As I understand it (disclosure, wife works for Zenimax but not in a department that's involved with any of this), Interplay got the licence for a Fallout MMO back in 2003-4 contingent on them actually making one. There were deliverables and milestones to be reached that would demonstrate that they were actually working on it otherwise the licence defaulted back to Bethesda. Zenimax claim that Interplay hasn't kept their end of the deal; Interplay counter-claim that Bethesda is acting in bad faith because it wants to pull the licence back and a lot of lawyers buy Bentleys for Christmas.

Do you think that Bethesda was actually working in bad faith? That seems awfully flimsy to me... how does Bethesda working in bad faith (assuming they are) affect your milestones? Did they withhold money or something?

Interplay was really just one asshole trying to hold onto the name and the IP despite having run the company into the fucking ground over 8 years ago. They made great games at one point, but that point has long ago passed. When the company went tits up, I think he might have sold off the IP rights for a song, then regretted it and reconstituted Interplay as a zombie dev house before finally announcing a Fallout MMO then delivering nothing more than a few emails over the ensuring 8 years.

Interplay is now well and truly dead with about $2 million (minus lawyer's fees) in this guy's pocket.

That is about what I had understood as well. Last I heard Interplay had three employees, the owner and two part time staffers. It was all about milking the IP.
