Rohan Online - YNK Interactive - PC

Ever played Lineage 2? Like grinding, don't wanna pay to play? Definitely give it a spin already. If you need more convincing, read on.

Gameplay: Though they have lore, I won't bother. Gameplay revolves around picking a set race who only had one class for each of them. Assuming you CAN grind to 50, you will unlock two specialized classes you can pick. I'm not going into detail unless people ask but the basic premise is: Tough humans, Healing Elves, Ranger Half Elves, Wizardly Dark Elves, Spear-wielding Dekans (Half Dragons), or Ninja Dhans (think Japanese)

The old classic grind is there, although they add a sprinkle of quests. Now the translation isn't half bad, but who bothers to read anyway? This isn't WoW. So you pick quest and talk to people, get items and exp as reward. That's right. EXP. And WoW Daily gold is here too. Some quests are repeatable, gives less exp than the first time but same amount of gold. Easily best way to earn money.

So you say, this is old shit, RK. Why even bother? Alright let's have a look at the other aspects of the game.

Loot.
Ever got a drop in Diablo with all the good mods on it, but can't wear it due to Level (OMG 3 more levels ) or high stat req? (OMG I'm a wizard, I don't have 40 STR!) in Rohan you can spend gold to refine it. Refining involves gambling your money to drop the level and stat requirement. It's fun and it's a great idea for a money sink. Hellgate should adopt this. Imagine a lvl 10 equipped with lvl 30 weapon? It's possible.

Loot isn't generic, it isn't groundbreaking either, but it's there. The random mods, HP/MP Leech, Crit%+. It's one of those engrossing things some ppl like doing, crafting the ultimate bow with socket stones. And since failure in crafting result in loss of items...heheh. Great time/money sinks. Oh, raw materials are intact weapons. Unlike Lineage 2 where you gather iron ores etc, you basically combine 2 different level of weapon to form a Rare. Succeed, then you can combine two Rares to get an Unique. Succeed, you can combine two Unique into an Ancient. Each stage of upgrade allow you to socket additional stones to make that Ultimate Weapon of Mass Grind.  DRILLING AND MANLINESS

There's also fishing mini-game. I won't lie to you, it sounds shit at first. But when I tried it, I was hooked. Ever picked up a piece of armour you don't need? "I wish I had a bow instead" Well, you can gamble it to get other items with fishing. It's simple and fun. Basic premise? Buy a fishing rod, use any loot (armour/weapon) as a bait then start fishing. Stop the bouncing arrow at the green zone, and you get a high grade fish. Others get you lower grade. Now double click the fish and watch the slots roll. Sometimes you get Weapon, Armour or just potions. Got a weapon you don't want? Fish with it again. Do it again. and again and again and again and again.

I'd say for people who wanted free MMO, try it.
I definitely am I liking it so far.

Yep. They seem to have taken Casino stuff literally everywhere for crafting. When crafting you see a sot of Fail & Success rolling. And sometimes it'll cock tease you and slow down at Success, only to trickle back to Fail to screw you over.  swamp poop

Wow, this really is a lot like Lineage 2. Does the grind turn into .01% gains/kill like L2 as well? The thing that drove me away from L2 was having to purchase Soul Shots (weapon charges which get used each attack). Having to play the market in order to purchase them, just to increase my levels while hunting killed any fun I was having. Rohan doesn't bust balls like that does it?

Nope. I didn't mention this but there's something to ease the grind for you.
Instead of soulshots, we buy mana pots, doesn't need to be crafted at all. Only at higher lvls you need to combine some mana pots to get a bigger MP per pop.
The Mob Kills when soloing will be kept track by the M.Kill counter. Lemme give you an idea how this work:
First 20 Kills = 7x EXP on the 20th mob killed.
40th Kill = 10x
60th Kill = 13x
80th Kill = 17x
100th Kill = 19x

Then it resets back to 1. Pretty much a good way to keep track of your play session. I usually end my play with 100th mob killed unless I'm questing. And you will use the repeatable cash quests to earn some decent cash. Usually 15-20 kills will net you the 5-10k cash reward and a small drop of EXP (1-2%) not too bad. But if you want to grind, there's always good mob spawns.

It certainly drew a lot of elements from L2 and improved a lot on the grind. I haven't even covered the Rohan Point currency (Yes it's real money trading.

I quit before they added the daily gold stuff but I thought the defining concept was that you were limited to doing it once per day or some such?

WoW limits you to a set amount of Daily Quests per character per day. Not all daily quests give the same amount of gold (some give item or honor or reputation rewards with a bit less gold).  Current limit in WoW is 25 per day.

Uh if you think 25 a day is too low to kill 25 mob each....ummm Rohan does not have a limit to how many times you can do it. Except that you can only have 25 quests in your journal. (IIRC, either 20 or 25)

According to Wikipedia, Rohan Online installs GameGuard.  Without getting into whether GameGuard is bad or not, I'd just like to say that it's getting to the point that the most important information for me in a PC game review is a description of what, besides the game, gets installed on my PC when I install the game.  Thus I provide this notice of GameGuard installation as a feeble attempt at a public service.

It is grindy, but it is a lot like Lineage 2. I'm trying Rohan Online out for a bit. Looks like fishing is initially pretty expensive, but then again, I haven't sold anything that has dropped because I want to use it as bait. I like the bonus XP system. It's a good idea, and since it's 20 mobs at a time and you're killing them for quests anyhow, it makes the grind seem less... grindy. We shall see. I am assuming the game will remain free of monthly subscription fees at lease since it looks like they're using the item market and exchange with Rohan Points (100RP = $1USD) system for making money. Sorta like Gunbound was. Except you could earn the points to use in Gunbound in-game as well as buying them, and certain items were not purchasable with cash points. Not sure if you can earn RP in-game or not yet. It doesn't appear so.

It does, sign up for Exchange market (one time 500 RP fee) and you can auction items away for RP.

I know I am.

I've been trying to make an account off-and-on for the past day or so with no luck.  For whatever reason, the CAPTCHA keeps failing (and we're quickly approaching extra credit territory).

We figured it out a bit ago, I had a period in my "secret question answer" and it borked the registration form.
