Yes it does.  All games need to give this option.

LOTRO does it.

It's pretty much a must-have MMO feature, IMO. There is no reason to have to look like Granny's fucking bedspread just so your stats won't suffer.

I can think of one. If a game has any sort of real PvP in it, its somewhat of a must to be able to size up your opponent by looks/gear. The only two games that i know of that have this option, do not have anything in the way of a PvP orientation.

In PvP it would be very bad if you foe had a broom in his hand, thats really a level 100+ sword of armor soiling +5.

I'd prefer to look like a scrub in PVP.

1) I hate PvP.
2) It might have some interesting effects on behavior if it was allowed.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

1. Your example is a bit off, EQ2 only allows visible armor and cloak slots on the appearance tab. No weapons/shields/ranged.

2. UO. Expect the worst, but makes for effective bluffing, too.

People in UO acutally used brooms to kick ass anyway, didn't they?  I seem to recall SOMEONE around here having an anecdote like that.

I always enjoyed EQII, am fairly bored with LoTRO until the expansion at least and AoC just felt like Oblivion with a chatroom to me.  2 free months for letting it DL while I slept and went to work, can't beat that deal.

Given the number of failures we've seen in MMORPGs, designers need to learn it's hard enough just to make a fun game without getting distracted by unnecessary drivel.

Finished patching EQ1, got on this morning.

I'm both overwhelmed and underwhelmed. The Temporal Chrysalis free item thing they were going on about faced me north and disappeared when I clicked it.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'll even get the enthusiasm to show my wife around the places where I used to waste my time..

As I expected, I just can't get into EQ1 anymore.  Part of it is not having my high lvl toons anymore, but mostly I think I'm spoiled by features that were implemented in other, newer morgs.  Having access to only 8 spells?  Couldn't do it in GW either.  I had to lol at the animations, compared to WoW - That's one thing that Bilzzard has really done a great job at.

On the other hand, I'm bored with all the other games out so I'm giving EQ2 a solid shot.  I simply never had the time to dedicate to it before, but they'll likely get my money till WAR or the WoW xpac (of which I'll burn through in 2 months and go back).

Because the expansion it's supposed to be for hasn't even been officially announced yet, let alone set live?  awesome, for real

I downloaded the raft of patches, logged in, and am completely fucking lost.  In EverQuest it's simply a matter of having been so many years that I have no clue how any of my gear or spells worked together, but EQ2 went and changed all of my spells and the tradeskill system, so that completely yanked the rug out from under me; what little chance I had to get my bearings was annihilated by that.  Worse, I haven't yet found any good resources to correct the problem; the old conjurer site that I went to has a spell list that hasn't been updated in a couple of years.  Restarting from scratch would likely be the better option, but after going through the living hell of betraying a Teir'Dal to Qeynos, I'm not about to go and ditch the character.

And while I'm on the subject of dark elves, does anyone know if it's possible to move into Neriak without giving up being a conjurer?  I'm very attached to Neriak, but I've always been more of a mage than a necromancer and'm not looking to give up my class to make the move.

Kitsune, check out eq2.wikia.com for class information; they're fairly thorough. Dont believe its possible to live in Neriak without betraying though.

Could anyone give me the total size of the EQ2 directory? I'm up to 6.5Gb and rising, the patcher counted down to 0 once and then again jumped up, probably downloading each expansion seperately.

Well, that was brief.

I was feeling good about firing up EQ2 again.  They've added new stuff, I liked the detail of their crafting...

But for some reason, the game kept crashing on load-in.  Then, today, IT WORKED.

I rolled up a cute little half-elf necro and started up in TD.  I was welcomed and told to go kill 4 things in order to get a new pair of sleeves.  I killed the things, returned, got my sleeves, the game crashed with no error message.

And that's when I thought.  Seriously.  Kill 4 poachers to get a new pair of sleeves.  Seriously?  That's not new.  And it's not content.  And at least WOW doesn't crash and me and make my video card sound like a Yugo going uphill.

Anyway, that's it for me.  Maybe I'll try again next time.  But damn that install took too long.

There is a tab on the paper doll screen for visual only items.  You can put anything you want in those slots

Not quite. Appearance slot items still have to be equippable by your class. Casters cannot wear armor, for example, but plate tanks can wear some robes.  I have my berserker in a mix of plate and leather.

Actually, for PVP, it makes good sense as well. Less textures to load means better performance, and PVP is all about performance. Plus, if you can't figure out who is what a few seconds into the fight, you suck and will die horribly anyway. And really, 90% of all people in PVP suck horribly and will die soon no matter what they look like.

Well that makes perfect sense to hand them out now, and to people who havent played in months or years. Don't release it till it's ready? Don't make a fucking fuss about it until it's relevent?

I guess it's my own fault. I should have known.  Ohhhhh, I see.

I hadn't played EQ2 since the first couple months after release. Much better game now, at least as a lowbie. Made a Sarnak which looked cool, but could not stand the running animation. So I made my first mangina. And not just a mangina, but a fairy mangina. This will entertain me for a couple weeks.

When does my (evil fairy lady) necromancer's pet stop looking like a bird and start looking like something undead? Is this a vestige of that shitmonkey archetype system they started with?

PS: add "mangina" to spellcheck prz.

This post makes me want to squeeze into my badass red jeans.

The bat is a crappy pet at that level you can tank in cloth armor, so it not a big deal.  The spider at 12 is you first real tank pet.  But he's not really "undead".  At 20, you get the first undead pet and first warlock pet.
