Any recommendations or mini-reviews on this? I'm looking for something casual that I can play in short doses while I'm waiting the 8 months it'll take Amazon to get me PotBS, and I'm sick of Dungeon Runners. I love the Final Fantasy IV art direction. I've heard the 'community' is intolerable, but I mostly play mmorpuhguhs by soloing next to other people anyway.

It's grindtasking. You'll be counting the number of mushrooms you have to kill to advance around lvl 5 or 6. At lvl 11 you'll cry, at 13 you'll quit.

Maplestory I just couldn't get into. It was pretty cute, but I am lousy at platforms, even when they're dumbed down for MMO play. I agree, it was one of the games I felt "grind" earliest into. And the community is, well, if you're not in elementary school, you won't fit in.
If you want a freebie game, I'd suggest Sword of the New World: Grenado Espada. Free to play with cashshop and a very different kind of gameplay as you control a group of three characters (well most likely two and a healerbot) and it has that Diablo-ish thrill of killing dozens of monsters at at time.

platform interface with press one button combat till lvl 40? gtfo seriously. I was surprised some of my buddies who were in the army asked me to join in on this dumbfuckery.
Out of 10 of them all quit but one who hit lv 275 (or was it 175). I bailed out at 32.
