So I got a new iPod Nano 3G and have decided to put it to good use. Even though I have 18,000 songs (12,000 of them being Big Gulp's, way to go!) I never can decide what music to put on the thing, so I have entered the world of podcasts. It appears iTunes podcast directory is total crap, and I figured some of you out there might have some choice ones you want to share.
Any in particular worth subscribing to?

No^H^H few links, you'll have to shake your google or many can be found in iTunes… …but here's some of my faves:
* NPR Fresh Air * Democracy Now * TWIT network (Leo Laporte's Podcast empire), see twit.tv… …including MacBreak Weekly, net@nite (though about to go on hiatus, love Amber McArthur!), TWIT (This Week in Tech), TWIL (This week in Law), Floss Weekly (F/OSS coverage, though Randall Schwartz, he who is the co-host now, is a "twit" in a different way), TWIM (This Week in Media), and there a bunch others I don't get including Security, Windows, and even one for parents & young kids… * Leo Laporte Tech Guy show (from his syndicated radio program), covers computers, cell phones, gadgets, cameras, etc.… * Behind the News with Doug Henwood * Some pastor messages, including my church and one w/ Greg Boyd of Woodland Hills church in Minnesota. * AudioBerkman - really good lectures on internet * CSPAN * Counterspin (FAIR podcast) * Cranky Geeks (yes, the dreadful Dvorak-bot can be amusing…) * KJZZ feed (local Arizona NPR affiliate) * This American Life (another NPR thing) * MSNBC Keith Olbermann (usually a 10 minute "condensed" bit from his Countdown program) * White Rose Society Thom Hartmann broadcast (heard on "AA", and maybe only "AA" program I can tolerate besides some weekend shows…)

If you like Kevin Smith (of Clerks fame), you might enjoy his Smodcast. I do.
It's listed in ITunes under comedy.

Since my girlfriend has a severe case of podcast addiction and I'm basically listening to whatever she has on every waking hour we're together I started wondering why there isn't an ongoing thread here. So, ARISE! So the ones I actually enjoy listening to (there's a lot more I'd really don't care about but I don't get a vote...): Sword and Scale: True Crime. Can give you nightmares, people are bad mkay... Serial: True Crime. Very professional and high quality research. Lore: Folklore and Urban Legends. The host is quite unlikable and self absorbed but it's nice and short (20 minutes) story/tale time. This American Life: Really packs a lot of stuff into it. From adorable stories to tragic events. Reveal: Things going wrong in the US. Good journalism. S-Town: Just a good story. Doug Loves Movies: Host invites 3-5 comedians, actors,... each shows and plays film knowledge centered games while being mostly high. Really funny.

Mine are all NPR-based and mostly positive.
99% Invisible - Design and Architecture. How much thought goes into stuff you never consider. Science Friday - If you don't/ can't listen on the radio, here's where you go. Radiolab - Stories around one big idea. Music, Science and Culture. One recent podcast was about the invstigation of what happens after police shootings leave the public eye. Another on CRISPR and what the possibilities and limitations actually are. Freakonomics Radio - How little things you wouldn't expect are interconnected.

The Dick Show: All the Hot Goss and drama following the sudden cancellation of the biggest problem. Its not a podcast per se, but since I can't RPG anymore due to suffering from bieng out in the wilderness, this site has hundreds of hours of people doing tabletop gaming. Ive been listening to this stuff for years. www.rpgmp3.comAny suggestions for some good picks?

Oh Jesus, I have lost a lot of my life to Podcasts and have a large selection to recommend.
History: History of Rome - Mike Duncan, finished now. Starts with mythology and finishes with the death of the last Western Emperor Classic podcast that helped get a lot of people into the area Revolutions - Mike Duncan. Overview of various modern revolutions starting with the English Civil War. History of Byzantium - Another podcaster takes up where Duncan left off and covers the history of the Eastern Roman Empire. Takes a little while to find his feet but super interesting area of history I was basically ignorant of. Hardcore History - Dan Carlin, very much pop history but entertaining, think long form coverage of random historical topics. He does have a tendency to cite to controversial claims without specifying how fringey they may be or quoting controversial figures without really remarking on any controversies. If you're already familiar with the topic it can be frustrating but damn he's dramatic. Older stuff is paywalled but there's more than enough recent stuff to get on with. History of the Crusades - Finished now but covers the whole of the Crusades, an area I didn't really have much detail about. In Our Time - BBC Radio programme that has a 1 hour discussion with experts on random topics with Melvyn Bragg. The archives are also split by subject area so you can go through various elements of science, history, literature, etc.
Politics: Opening Arguments - Interviewer and Lawyer tackle contemporary legal issues on the US national stage. Left leaning but does a good job of educating people on US law while also providing knowledgeable analysis of current legal/political issues. Common Sense - Same guy as Hardcore History. Slightly unusual angle on a lot of issues, the tone is a bit Alex Jones at times but overall it's sane and interesting. Sinica Podcast - On China, it's more general culture but politics gets brought up quite a bit. If goings on in China or Chinese perspectives on things is of interest to you then it's definitely worth checking out.
Skeptic's Guide to the Universe - Panel podcast that discusses ongoing issues in pseudoscience, recent science news stories and science communication generally. The cast have a really good rapport and it's a good source of science news too. Monster Talk - Skeptical look at cryptozoology and various other legendary beasts/monsters. It's really interesting and amazing if you have to interact with people who get excited about Bigfoot.

Two excellent podcasts for the Trump years: Pod Save America - three former Obama 08 insiders (led by chief speechwriter Jon Favreau) shoot the shit intelligently and humorously about the Trump administration's latest. Pod Save The World - outstanding spin-off that does major interviews with key foreign policy figures (e.g. amazing one-on-one with former US Ambassador to Russia Mike McFaul).

Ooh! And Comedy podcasts:
The Bugle - Andy Zaltzman originally with John Oliver until he left for reasons totally unknown. Now with a rotating guest, fun satire and commentary on current events.
BBC's Comedy of the Week - Usually good, currently on the Now Show.
Read It and Weep - Mostly for the archives, I've found the stuff done in the last year or so pretty dull. It started out with some comedians getting together to read bad books and make fun of them. Then branched out into other forms of entertainment and the recent ones have also had most of the other presenters leave and a series of rotating guests and new hosts. The archives are probably worth a listen through though.

Ooh, I forgot on the History podcasts (I have a shit load subscribed and have really fallen behind on some) also:
The History of China podcast - Laszlo Montgomery Starts with a very quick chronological overview of the greatest hits of ancient Chinese history and later episodes are basically him picking a random period or topic and giving it a few episodes. The history of Tea and the Hong Kong series are both very interesting, tea especially!
History of Philosophy Podcast - An introduction to the thinking of all the great philosophers through history. Western focus but he begins by going through Ancient philsophers in Greece and Rome then, following the influence of Aristotle, gave a run down of Islamic philosophy and is currently finishing up Western Medieval philosophers. I believe he also has a spin-off with a colleague looking at Indian philosophy. It's definitely dry if you're not into philosophy but, especially the Islamic series, was really interesting for me as it's something I knew nothing about previously.
History of WWII - I've kind of stopped listening to this one because the guy doing it gets very easily distracted and I don't really want to have wait two months for updates on the war in Africa because he's really enjoying researching and talking about the life of Churchill leading up to the war. The actual content is good though.

Due to recently becoming a father, and finding it difficult to sit down and watch/play media, I've spent a lot of time listening to podcasts over the past year while doing chores, walking the baby, etc. I'm listening to several that have already been mentioned so I won't say anything about them, but here are some of my favorites: Comedy... My Dad Wrote a Porno. A man whose father has written a pornographic novella reads said novella while making commentary with his two friends. The author is hillariously inept, both at writing and understanding basic anatomy. It recently finished its second season, each season dealing with a new novella. How Did This Get Made. A podcast hosted by Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas and June Diane Raphael. Each episode they celebrate and dissect poorly made movies. For fans of B-movies, it's fantastic. To get the most of each episode you really have to see the film they're takling about first. The Sleepaway Camp, Vampire's Kiss, Birdemic and Junior episodes are standouts. Geekery... One Shot. An RPG podcast with great production. The host/GM runs a new group through one shot adventures. Each adventure is usually between 5-6 episodes. Many of the other affiliated podcasts they have on their site are very good as well. Critical Hit. A long-running RPG podcast with some good humor. One of the players is really annoying, but overall, lots of fun. Mission Log. Produced by Gene Roddenberry's son, Rod Roddenberry, in each episode, two Star Trek fans dissect an episode of Star Trek over the course of an hour. They began with Star Trek: TOS' first pilot, The Cage, and have worked their way through the entire TOS, animated series, several movies, and are now in the middle of season 6 of TNG. Their goal is to analyze every episode of Star Trek. I hadn't ever watched TOS, but I've been a big fan of TNG and DS9 for years and after hearing about this podcast I've almost finished TOS, listening to the podcast after every episode. It's a lot of fun if you're a Trek fan.

For tabletop RPG fans I love Nerd Poker. Hosted by Brian Posehn, with quite a few comedians and special guests. I've almost wrecked my car on numerous occasions, or woke my wife up late and night laughing out loud. If you've ever run 2nd edition DND campaigns it will bring back fond memories. Chris Hardwick's The Nerdist Podcast can be very good depending on who the guest happens to be.

Only podcast I listen to regularly is F This Movie. Hosted by a gentleman named Patrick Bromley and with a rotating cast of his friends it's a pretty casual but insightful movie podcast. They all have pretty good chemistry together, can be really funny, and have an incredibly friendly community on their site (so it probably wouldn't appeal to a lot of people here). I also occasionally listen to the horror movie podcast Shockwaves (formerly Killer Pov). It's a solid podcast but I'm generally a casual horror movie fan so it's not something I listen to on a weekly basis.

When you're done with it I would strongly recommend the History of Byzantium as a continuation. It's not Mike Duncan but the guy gets his own style going and it's really, really interesting to learn about the Eastern part of the Empire just carrying one for another thousand years.
Also Mike Duncan's Revolutions podcast is as good as Rome with a interesting mix of historical periods. I learnt more about the English Civil War from that than I ever learnt in school.
