Apparently this just went live early this month, and it's a web-based... pvp MMO thing.

You make a character, you get tokens, gold and items via dueling (NPCs and players), and it auto-fights based on stats. You can buy vendor items, there's an auction house-style system, and you can buy 'packs', which are basically booster packs with random items and 'Scrolls', which are one shot things you can choose to use before combat to affect the outcome. It's pretty fun - their business model is through getting you hooked enough to buy 'Noblestones' for RL cash, which let you get gold and packs and do respecs and stuff.

(There are no referral links in any of these - Even if there is a referral system, I haven't found it yet)

Whenever an opponent discards a card, Megrim deals 2 damage to that player.

Hrm, didn't there used to be something called 'Carnage Blender' or something, which was quite similar?

Megrim's avatar is blowing my mind.  Must drink more coffee.

Also, I checked this out when their server crashed last month after being dugg.  Will revisit when I get a chance (read: never).

That was a great video. I'd love to find a decent copy of it, the tiny ass one I got when the thing came out looks tiny at today's resolutions. About the same size as his avatar almost.

Evolution by Pearl Jam. Todd McFarlane did the animation.

Is there anything to the combat besides stats and items?  Back in the late nineties I used to play a text-based "virtual boxing league" that was similar in concept to this, but there the gameplay revolved around coding the AI for your fighter with a simple scripting language.  You'd read blow-by-blow reports of your upcoming opponent's previous matches, then try to guess what his stats and strategy were, so you could code something to beat him.  It was pretty fun for a while, but without the skill element of analyzing opponents and tweaking AI, it would have been pretty dismal.

Gave this a go but got very bored at level 3... no much strategy in place and is otherwise a bit dull.

I tried it also. Got bored really quickly. Its like Diablo2 items, but with no real skill needed to get this. Its a grind with out a game. My roommate loves it though. He probably plays it 4+ hours a day.

I just leave it on and accept all challenges at the end of the day.  I couldn't say why though.
