Just thought I'd share a pic of my new friend I picked up from the SPCA on the weekend. I've been renting for the last six years and haven't been able to get a pet, so when I finally bought my own condo last month, I decided it was time. I both dogs and cats, but I couldn't get a dog with my schedule, so a kitty it was. She's a long haired silver tabby, about two years old. The pound named her Harmony, and everyone I've mentioned it to thinks its a ridiculous name for a cat, so I'm going to keep it. She was picked up as a stray, and was so matted that they spent an hour cutting the mats off of her. Its about half grown back so she looks like she has a Mohawk the length of her back. Great thing about getting an adult cat as opposed to a kitten, is you get a chance to see what kind of personality they have up front. This cat is insanely friendly, loves attention, doesn't scratch, and took all of an hour to decide that she owns both my coach and my bed. And the floor as well I think. So um, yea. Support your local SPCA.

Congrats, she's a cutie.
Wish I had gotten a kitty instead of a puppy, but my puppy is so damn cute. The daycare expenses are astronomical.
Anyways, more pics please!

Good find. I second picking up adult cats at a shelter. One of my favorite cats of the many we've owned was a battered old tom cat who we renamed Jones. At the shelter, he was up on his perch, unfazed by the stream of stupid cooing humans coming in and out. He'd seen some action, since he was missing half an ear, but he wasn't vicious at all. He was just too cool to be violent. We only got to keep him for 3 years, since he died of the usual hyperthyroidism.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Good for you. Adopting stray pets is a great thing.

I take it the SPCA is something like the Humane Society? I really want to get a Shih Tzu, but the humane society only wants to get rid of Pit Bulls because of the stupid by-law that was put in place. I'd get a cat, but my roomie is allergic to them and Shih Tzus have "real hair" and don't get the normal pet dander business.

My wife and I had the same problem, we wanted to adopt a dog from the SPCA/Humane Society, but they were all seemed to be mutts or larger dogs that shed. We ended up getting a Bichon Havanese that we named 'Kenobi'. I have a ton of pictures of the little guy, just no where to host them at the moment. I'm not a fan of 'toy breed' dogs, but we put a bunch of research into them and found one that wasn't yappy, isn't scared of it's own shadow, and is great with kids. So far, he's exactly as advertised. Edit Uploaded some pictures.

Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Doubles as the local pound, animal control, etc. And yes, there are lots of pitbulls and pitbull/rottie crosses at ours too.
Only down side of going to the SPCA, is now I have these urges to go volunteer, walk the dogs, whatever. I know its a great cause, but I really don't have the time to invest.

We've always taken in strays. Living in the country, someone's always dropping animals off. Kinda sad, but they make for good pets, usually. My mother has two rescued cats, one was an adult and is super-scaredy cat, but also super lovey-dovey to the few of us she trusts. The other was a kitten but is crazy spastic insane. I can't have animals right now Because of my apartment, not some restraining order thingy. I do have our library cat, though.

OH SNAP! I'm going to keep checking the humane society for Shih Tzus and hopefully by the time I move I can find one to adopt. I'd hate to go pay some idiot for a puppy. Murdoc, is your dogs hair the nice kind that doesn't mess with allergies? That dog is damned cute.

Every animal my sister has, except for one parrot, is a rescue. Iguana, dove, dog, whateves. No cats, though. Both her son (who has asthma) and her hubby are allergic.
We have a cat in the neighbourhood who is trying to adopt us, however. It got in the house once and stops by every day or so. It has no tags but is wearing a flea collar. It looks well taken care of still so I have no idea if someone has abandoned it or it's just a new neighbour's outside cat. The lack of any tag is sort of concerning. It's lovely and very affectionate, almost dog like affection. I gave it water a couple of times on really hot days but I don't give it food. I have no idea what it eats and there's probably enough varmint in the woods around here to keep it eating if it has been abandoned. If no one pays attention to it when it comes on our deck, it tries it's best to look adorable until we say hello. Unfortunately, I don't want a cat.

Yup, he's hypoallergenic. We have to have a dog that doesn't mess with allergies.

The balder, the better. I hate dealing with dog hair. I'd go for those Chinese Crested dogs but I don't think I'd have any luck at the pound. Also, they're only about a foot tall and I'm sort of clumsy. I have strange taste in handbags, too.

My fiancee was feeding her friend's cats while her friend was taking care of her mother (the friend's mother) while she was in the hospital. Anyway, she noticed one cat went missing. When the friend came back, the cat was shaved down and had a new collar with a phone number. The neighbors had kittynapped her cat, sent it to the vets and slapped a collar on it. In two weeks! Then they held the cat hostage for the medical fees!

Disguise.
Whenever I take an animal to the vet before returning it to the owner, I don't try to charge them for the bill. That's just being a dick.

MY CAT IS MISSING! She has been gone for about 2 weeks. I put up fliers and she has a microchip/collar... Starting to lose hope. Also, I had an old woman kidnap my first pet kitty... *SOB* (I knew it was an old woman because he would dissapear for a few days, then come back smelling of Red Door or some shit) These forums are dredging up some bad memories... First swarms of cave crickets, now kitty napping? What's next? Oh please don't let it be bees covering my head again.

I'm guessing the fleas. But then again, they had a shaved cat when they moved in a couple weeks ago. I wonder if they kittynapped that one, too. I'm on to them.

Thanks Murdoc! Now I'm stuck with a decision. Before I was quite content with getting a Shih Tzu. Now I just don't know Chacy Ranior - That dog is just so damn adorable. Shih Tzu - They're cute too. I like the short hair look. And then there's Murdocs breed. God damnit.

The short hair look is pretty much up to you. I know with our dog there's a show cut, and then the puppy cut. If you're showing your dog (which we most certainly are not doing) you have to leave the hair long. Ours will always have a puppy cut, so quite short all over.
I'm super happy with our puppy. Smart dog, amazing with kids, has a sturdier, more muscular frame then most toy breeds, and a great personality.
Sorry to jump into a SPCA kitty thread, but I'm like a new parent showing off their kid.

Though I've always adopted strays and troubled pets, when I can finally have pets again I'm going to get breeds for once. I'm definitely getting a Russian Blue for a cat (I think the fiancee is going to get an orange tiger cat). Then we're considering a dog and I'd really like to get an Akita and get it trained properly.

We have one like that, too. She stops by for a bit of loving, enjoys the AC for an hour or so, then goes on her way. After a month of this I found out she is the landlord's so now I joke she is coming by for an inspection.

I saw that the other day. Poor thing. Still, an animal doesn't have to be beautiful to love it. Evidently, Chinese Crested are very affectionate. I'd prefer one of the cute ones but it's not set in stone. I also would prefer a rescue but I don't think I'll find one there. In any case, if/when I get a pet, it'll probably just happen. One thing I'm sure of, though. Anything over 15 lbs must come with it's own clean up crew.

Err...really, I'll stick with the Akita. Here's an Akita pup: They are great loyal dogs when trained, and also great guard dogs. I'd like that for when the fiancees goes for long walks by herself.

A former roommate of mine had a Blue Heeler. Really smart dogs, a nice size, and they basically don't shed.
Comedy moment when I was at the shelter to get the kitteh was watching a smaller woman trying to take one of the dogs for a walk - a Burnese Mountain dog. Fuck those boys are big.
