Meh, there's always been some form of Christianity that thinks self-mutilation/pain/whippings bring you closer to God. They are usually just religious masochists though.

Mother Teresa was pretty into that "suffering brings you close to Jesus" thing.

Suffering makes me say "Jesus!" a lot. Also "Fuck".

Well, it's true IMO.  You can take anything to too much of an extreme though.

Witty banter not included.

I was referring moreso to the concept of flagellation that was popular dating from periods slowly after the fall of the Roman empire continuing into today. People whipping themselves for Christ has always had a small but steady following.

These guys always dismay me.  It must really piss the big fella off that he goes to all the trouble of getting tortured to death to help us and to attempt to ease human suffering, and then we go missing the whole point and nailing ourselves to planks.  These people should watch the gourd/shoe scene in Life Of Brian.

They wouldn't get it. Reading the Bible tells you the Jews didn't get it much either over the years in the desert. Nobody really gets God, they just try to amble along in the way they think is best, and sometimes you get weird stuff.
