Ok, I've been fooling with this, and there is plenty I don't know, but I know a little more than I used to, and I'm going to share it with whoever wants it, because a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and I'm a dangerous kinda guy.

This is all hi security, nothing even close to 0.5.  I did it all in one region, no price hunting, no waiting for my price.  I ran 3 L1 missions, one of which was Worlds Collide, and the income from those missions is not part of what I'm talking about.  This is purely what I made salvaging.

I spent 2-3 hours salvaging L1 rat wrecks in deadspace.  I had a UI bug that probably made that 50% more time than it should have been.  I am also only Salvage 3, which probably slowed me down as well. I didn't sell anything for less than 100K per; the cheap stuff I'll aggregate in one of my many containers, and probably let it rot.

Net income on the 'good' (100K+) salvage, after tax, without going out of region to sell was roughly six million isk.

I did this in an Amarr T1 Punisher, with the salvager in the extra high slot.  You could do this with a salvage miner setup, if you can't fit the salvager in the fighting ship of your choice.  More cargo would have been nice, but no matter.  Tractors would also be nice.

Regular mission loot is rather annoying when salvaging, as you have to loot the wreck before salvaging, and loot means 1500m or less, while salvage works from 5000m.  All you do is target, turn on the salvager and wait until you get something or the wreck comes up empty.  The salvager is fire and forget on any wreck, it keeps trying until it succeeds and you get 0-10 items, at which point the wreck poofs.  Each attempt takes about 10 seconds.

I'm sure I could have made more playing the market, but I figured that 100K per was fine for not having to do more than check the region market and set a couple of waypoints.

Summary, it's like mining, except quicker, with wrecks.

100K Goods I sold, for those looking to compare local prices with Amarr Region, were Burned Logic Circuit, Fried Interface Circuit, and Alloyed Tritanium Bar.  I also sold some Contaminated Nanite Compound for about 200K each.

It's fairly easy to get 2-10m/hour doing high-sec salvaging after agent missions, even though wrecks in agent missions only have a 50% chance of salvageable loot (versus 75% for "free range" pirates).  A pair of destroyers (1 for clearing the mission, 1 for salvaging it, the latter with 3-4 tractor beams and 4-5 salvagers) can keep you in the multi-million-per-hour range.  Selling all the salvage can take a while, though, and the salvage market fluctuates wildly...those Contaminated Nanite Compounds were going for 400k a week ago, and some "junk" salvage now goes for 50-100k each.

Salvage arbitrage can be much more profitable, but is potentially much riskier, and takes a good stake to start.

Agree with destroyers rocking for salvaging.

Best prices for most salvaging items are in Jita.  I've made some high-margin returns on placing buy orders in mission hubs and selling in trade hubs.  Margins are dropping as more people get into this, though.

Unfortunately, from what I've found, the amount you make from salvaging per unit time doesn't increase commensurately with rat size (and thus mission level). Running L3s, it's generally a tossup whether I should spend time salvaging all the rats or do the next mission for lewts and moneys.

This may've changed, since it's been about a month since I've done any missioning/salvaging.

I've found you only need one setup for the L2 missions. Vexxor. Five drones (mediums or lights, depending on the mission) do all the killing. Fill three of the hi-slots with two salvagers and a tractor beam. (I've got a remote armor rep and a nos in the other two).

Setup for an armor tank, let them get good and mad at you, and kill them with drones. Then start salvaging all the empties within 5k while your tractor brings the rest closer. I'm considering dumping the Nos for anothe tractor.

I've got a lovely bin full of salvaged goodies.

Say, does anyone know which rats drop the most components for power grid rigs? I need a heap of 'em for a Raven setup.

What parts are you looking for? I know what drops off of Serpentis and Angel Cartel rats.

I made 3 million off salvaged stuff from two L3 missions. Salvaging II. I only salvaged the big ships for the most part. The level 2 missions gave me nothing so far but then they were drones and military instead of pirates. Hard to tell what to sell the components for as the prices are all over the map.

You can mount 5 salvagers plus a tractor on a Dominix. Might get a little iffy doing L3s like that though.

I haven't really considered how to outfit a Dominix. I'm still in cruisers with maybe 6 million ISK to my name and 30 million in inventory. (And probably that much again in salvage components). I'm taking my sweet time, and I've got a few more drone skills I need to move up before I'd be ready for a BS anyways.

And waste my millions of drone SPs? I think not. I am Gallente. Fear my Drone Wrath.

More seriously -- unless I'm sorely mistaken, badly confused, or just plain newb and/or stupid, there's not a better T1 Drone BS than a Domi.

Brutix and Myrmidon are both Gallente Battlecruisers.  Brutix has nice damage from guns, nice tank, and has a 50 drone bay.  Myrmidon also has a great tank, and has the same damage bonuses as a Dominix for drones.

If you're using drones, the Myrm is cheaper and will do the same damage with 5 heavies.  Plus it looks about a hundred times better than the dominix.

I was considering skipping battlecruisers and just moving to Battleships. I'd use the Mrymidon -- I have decent gunnery skills, but I've found that if I'm using my guns I'm screwed. Currently my Vex doesn't even mount guns, and I haven't missed them a bit.

Battlecruisers are massive overkill for level 2 missions and are slow. And until all of your support skills are really good they're risky to use on level 3s. I'd skip them for now and go right for a dominix. The domi is a lot more forgiving while you're learning the ins and outs of L3s.

So the 1500 m 3 of Slavage I have been hoarding is worth something eh? Thats cool. I plan on filling a giant secure can then carrier jumping it with some mins from 0.0

According to the new patch notes, it appears mercs will start dropping salvage.

Yeah all NPCs now supposidly. Also people sit outside stations (like Jita 4-4) and salvage the wrecks from PvP.

Which helps keep Jita a little neater.  Hisec Salvagers are proliferating, and prices seem to be dropping.  We'll see how long this lasts.

I don't have any test-evidence, but it seemed to me last night that they modified something about the salvage drop rate, too; it seemed to take fewer cycles to get either the salvage or the "no salvage" message, but I think I got the same amount in my cargo hold at the end of one hour.  And I think I saw fewer lootable wrecks in the few missions I did, compared to the day before.  But, again, I might be wrong.
