Microsoft's Gates expresses interest in Nintendo
, 08.04.04, 10:15 AM ET

FRANKFURT (AFX) - Microsoft Corp's founder Bill Gates has expressed his interest in acquiring computer games company Nintendo Co from the Japanese billionaire Hiroshi Yamauchi.

"If Hiroshi Yamauchi phones me up, i will pick up at once," Gates told WirtschaftsWoche magazine on the sidelines of an analyst conference.

Gates added he would immediately make an offer if Yamauchi was willing to sell.

I for one am interested in seeing how this develops. As silly as it would be for Yamauchi to do this, yargh, I'd love to have 1st Party Nintendo Games on a more powerful system.

No no no.  Well, if he manages to keep all of the Nintendo programmer's and force them to produce Xbox titles then I guess it will be okay.

I don't think XBox + Nintendo = PS2, though.  He'd do better to just buy Sony.  He'd be an empire.  I wonder if anyone has registered Microsony.com yet.

Sony is bigger than Microsoft otherwise I'm sure he would.

Ok, they can merge.  I'll check for Sonysoft.com, too.  Just in case.

That'd be a horrible, horrible mistake for MS.  As corporations go, Sony is a guy with a 12 gauge firing buck shot, MS is a sniper.  Sony's the bigger company, but because they've got their fingers in so many pies they're not able to maneuver as quickly or as adeptly as Microsoft is, while MS can focus sharply on certain core areas they want to own.  And yep, I think that they'll wind up being the really big winners in the console arena.

We all have our MS gripes, but rarely has a company that has grown so large so quickly been as surefooted as they have.  For being so large they're still able to change course radically when need be, and if they merged with Sony they'd just be the junior partner to a megacorp.  They'd completely lose their identity and what makes them so potent in the first place.

Well Microsoft has a market capitalization of 305 billion US and Sony only has a market cap of 32 billion US so I would say Microsoft is quite a bit larger than Sony. Not to mention that Microsoft is sitting on 56 billion in cash right now (though they are going to be giving that away to shareholders as dividends) which means if they wanted to they could buy Sony with roughly half their cash reserves. It's good to be a software monopoly.

No they could not, but for another reason than cash.

You see, Japanese companies buy American companies, like Sony owning various movie studios. This is because there is a free market in the U.S., so companies get bought.

But American companies don't buy Japanese companies. This is because Japan has a heavily regulated economy, not a free market.

Also, Sony as a shole is VERY diversified, and Microsoft has sought to reduce its own diversification. Buying Sony would cause a million problems that Ballmer et al don't want.

But to get back to the main topic: I don't think Nintendo will sell itself to Microsoft simply because it would dilute the trademark; no matter what Microsoft pays, the end result "division" Nintendo would become would be less worth than the price paid. Also, the FTC could take it as an attempt at reducing competition, even though the competitor most likely to benefit from a more absent Nintendo is Sony...

I'm just fucking tired of Nintendo bring out a cereal box prize console every 5 years so I can play 3-4 games. Seriously, after the Snes, for every system there's been about 3-4 games that are must own. I don't want another console to play fucking Mario. I will not be buying their next gen system until it costs $25. Those assholes need to step out of the hardware market. Now.
