Hey all- I finally dug my old hardware out to set up Xbox so I can get into Xbox Live and get my ass handed to me by ya'll. Of course, it is fraught with trouble. I get different error messages from my Xbox, all of which result in no connection. The specifics- Netgear Dual Speed Hub DS104 (I used this a couple of years ago to share DSL with my roommate)- I have heard that many Netgear products do not work with XBL- is this one of them? Do I need new equipment (please save the genitalia jokes, ya jackals)? Comcast Hi Speed Internet connection with RCA modem. I plugged the modem output into port 1 on my hub; port 3 goes to my PC (connection I am using now, so it is obviously working). I have tried the ports 2 and 4 for my Xbox. Have entered the following into my XBox- DNS Servers IP address MAC address user name/password[/list:u]
All with no results. Anyone have any advice?

I'm on Comcast behind a Linksys router and just left everything set at Automatic. There's a list of routers that are known to not work with XBL on the XBL help page.
What error are you getting anyway? I assume it detects a cable connection to the xbox and then gives you an internet connection error?

I've gotten 3 or 4 different types of errors (DNS not found, etc). I entered my DNS server info by hand, but it still doesn't like it. I am suspecting that it is the Netgear hub, since there are several listed on the Xbox support site (but not mine in particular).
So- I may be in the market for a router. Any suggestions? The cheaper (but still decent) the better...

My linksys wireless g router has worked flawlessly with the xbox live. Never a problem although I haven't had time to test the signal strength from downstairs (router is on the second floor of the new house).

Does your Comcast Internet connection support multiple devices? If not you'll have to setup some sort of Internet connection sharing through your PC, or get a router that can do Network Address Translation (NAT) and work with Comcast, or upgrade your Comcast Internet service. Here's an Xbox Live Comcast page that might help as well: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/connect/comcast.htm

The problem probaly is that you are using a hub, I would at least get a switch.
Really what you need to do is get a router (or something with a dhcp server in it), at the price of a router these days, your time is worth more than the router.

I guess that reading is hard since I didn't even notice he said HUB. I just assumed router. You can probably get a good Linksys or other branded, non-wireless router for $20-30 now. Hell, I'm using a 4 year old Linksys and still haven't had any problems out of it.

I am using a Hub on Bellsouth's DSL, and am able to ICS my two computers (on Win98SE no less) and was able to set up X-Box live on it with no trouble. It isn't the hub (or a hub, it might be that particular hub).

Hmmm. This is a decent price, but the reviews are pretty spotty. It also isn't specifically listed as one of the known goods on the xbox site. What are the odds of the pimple at the local electronics store knowing if the router I choose works with Xbox (and Comcast)? It sounds like Comcast is aggressively interfering with home networking (they must track MAC addresses?) in some cases. Edit- Haem, what brand of hub are you using? I am wondering if it is just Netgear...they mention on their site that Microsoft sends a spurious signal via XBL that fucks with Netgear products for some reason... linkage. I understand about 1/2 of what that page says...any of you networking gurus wanna interpret?

I'm not familiar with that router. It looks like it's probably just a newer version of my BEFSR41 and it has definately worked out great for me.

I will have to check what kind of hub it is when I get home. It was a cheap one, but I bought it a few years ago and haven't had much need to look at it since.

I am using this Netgear Router. It was an easy setup for a nub like me and around $50 at BestBuy. Also, my gf's brother brought over his Xbox a few weeks ago and plugged it into the router and was online with no problems.

I am running a linksys router, about the same price as the netgear. Keeps blowing up in orlando thunderstorms though. Must buy a UPS with ethernet ports protected. I think it is getting blown through the cable modem, since the power supply is already on a surge protector.
About $50 at best buy as well, sometimes they have mail in rebates of 20 or 30 bucks though.

It isn't the hub (or a hub, it might be that particular hub). I was using a hub and swbell dsl connection and it worked fine for months till they did something on their end and fuxored it all up. Hub still works but computer and xbox would not connect together through it. Ended up getting a linksys router and haven't had trouble since.

That is what I figured, but since I last learned about networking in the token ring days, I wanted someone a little less ignorant to confirm =) I am thinking about hitting Best Buy or Circuit City tonight. Any suggestions? Will the pimple at either store be able to confirm that the router I buy WILL work with XBL? Anyone know the skinny on their return policies? I seem to remember that we had a few ex-employees from one or the other posting here.

Anyone know the skinny on their return policies? 1. Buy this. - Or of course something comparable. I've owned 2 or 3 netgear routers, they've all failed. DLink is completely hit or miss, perfect or DOA. 2. No. 3. 30 days, possible restocking fee depending on how much shit you throw at the manager and/or you convince the tech it did not work as advertised. The best tactic is to say 'but YOUR employee told me it would work with XBL.' Best Buy managers are fucking pushovers. A pox on them (I still have hate from working there for 5 years).

That appears on the 'known good' list at Xbox.com, so I think I will take your advice...thanks!
Now- in order to avoid getting raped for $7 a month extra by Comcast, I need to reset my connection and allow the router to get assigned the MAC address, right?
This is my plan- turn everything off for several minutes and get all the wires hooked up. Turn on the modem first, then the router, then the Xbox. Will this reset my MAC from my computer to the router, which can then share my connection as many times as I see fit without Comcast's billing department climbing up my ass?

I've never known Comcast to give a shit about routers using DHCP with only one external IP. I wouldn't worry about it at all.
Hey, while we're on the subject of routers, do any of you happen to use a Linksys WRT54G with the hacked Satori firmware? I'm trying to figure out just how far I can transmit with this thing because I'm going to have to be a bit shady when I move in a week. We can't risk getting cable modem service at the house I'm moving to, due to the fact that they get cable completely for free already, so we were going to try to split cost with one of the guys we know a couple of houses down (~50 yards max) who already has cable modem service.

It's hard to say since there are so many factors which affect the range on those things. A good wireless router can reach over 100 meters indoors but that assumes there aren't many walls or other signal blockers/degraders between the transmitter and the wireless device. You may need one or more repeaters to actually get a good signal between the houses.

Well, I took Schild's advice and bought the Linksys router. After about an hour of dicking around with it, I finally read the instructions CAREFULLY and got my connection up and running. Then proceeded to set up my XBL subscription, popped in Links, and found...
NO ONE online to play. WTF? I thought I would be able to scare up a game reasonably quickly. I downloaded the free course available and bought Kapulua (I have some friends who have a condo near it, so I had to get it to show them), but never did see anyone else to play. Is there some special trick? Is the whole thing just a network of private games, leaving someone with a blank Friends list SOL?
For the record, my tag is WayAbvPar (I know, it is a surprise), and I own the following games-
Links 2k4 (skill level- decent) ESPN NFL 2k5 (only played one game so far, so I am an ultra-n00b) NCAA 2k5 (still mostly a n00b) Crimson Skies (haven't played in a couple of months, so I am rusty AND n00bish)
I also have Halo (which I hate) and Fight Night (which has no XBL support).
If you are so inclined, put me on your friends list and look me up for a game sometime.

I'll try to add you tonight. My gamertag is HaemishM if anyone hasn't added me yet. I don't have Links, but should have ESPN NFL 2k5 by this weekend.

Fingolfin269 - Crimson Skies, Top Spin, NCAA 2k5, ESPN NFL 2k5, and Halo (xbconnect). I haven't really played Crimson Skies or Top Spin but am somewhat decent at the football games. I bought way too many games when I first got the xbox and haven't managed to go back and play Crimson Skies or Top Spin very much.
