My dad being the fussy eater he is, this is what I'm making for Sauced and myself after the holiday with the family:

    *  Turkey two ways: legs confit (I bought a pound of duck fat to accomodate this Dyonesian dream I've been having) and roasted breast (brined overnight in white wine with oranges, for that perfect juicy tenderness)
    * Mashed Yukon gold/roasted garlic potatoes with mushroom-shallot gravy
    * Bruleed sweet potatoes with sage (I'm preparing a sage custard to pour over the sweet potatoes and will brulee the top with some brown sugar when they're done)
    * Savory bread pudding (made from scraps of jalapeno cornbread and nutty artisanal bread heels that I've been stashing up in the freezer) with celery, mushrooms and lots of thyme
    * Haricots verts au gratin (a fancy way of saying green bean casserole, made with homemade bechamel instead of canned cream of mushroom soup, and topped with toasted shallots and asiago instead of Funyons)
    * Wilted spinach with bacon and orange zest
    * Cranberry-ginger chutney made with triple-sec
    * No room for dessert. We'll just have vodka and cran with a cigarette.

Please share your menu!

Popcorn.  My original plans were waylaid due to my fiances mother approaching deaths door.  So its go to my ex-wifes house or stay home, pop some popcorn up, and get hammered to Firefly.

Ritz and Water.

Seriously, I'm going over my GP's home. There's either going to be not enough of the good stuff, or far too much.

I'm in charge of the taters for the fam-fest tomorrow because I make the best god damn mashed potatoes in the universe.

Pumpkin pie, pecan pie, apple pie, and cranberry pie.  I was put in charge of pie for the family thing.  Hopefully four is enough.

I am reminded why I so seldom make pie crust from scratch.  That stuff is the devil.   tongue

My uncles gf insisted that she make the entire thanksgiving dinner for the entire extended family.  We're supposed to show up at five, this should be interesting.

My wife made a chocolate-pumpkin bunt cake. I almost ate it last night but was able to control myself.

The only other thing we are bringing to our family dinner is a store-bought pumpkin pie (yah I know, store bought?!) and some of the raspberry mead my wife made earlier this year.

Happy Turkey Day everybody! The bruleed sweet potatoes were actually good. I was afraid they would turn out like socialism - a good idea, but perhaps a failure in practice. But it came out savory, with the sweetness of the potatoes coming through the sage-y custard and the crunch of torched brown sugar bringing the noise. I unfortunately have no idea how to reheat a custard without turning it to omelette.

What? Why?

All week I have sat and thought (whee no work).  Today I looked at possabilities, and I see rejoining as an option.  I am having fuck all luck getting a decent job, and the ones I do land make me want to slice my cerebrum.

And I miss the DOING SOMETHING.  Thats a big motivator.  I have a great relationship currently, I love my kids, and I enjoy other aspects of my life.

But I am missing something.

I hate the job market here (Hampton Roads), I hate not believing and building on things, and I hate my current situation.  I suck at conveying things, but this is how I feel.

Sorry to mess up the Thanksgiving Thread.  I ate macaroni.  It was good.

Yeah.  I am working on it, but I think its a good thing.  Good news, My brother is coming from Baghdad next week,  2 months early.  Speculate in the politics thread, but its pretty fucking freaky.  Considering he is 3 months late by 2 months early now (this is a HUGE fuckton unit who was forced to stay last minute, and recalled hundreds for staying longer after sending them home).  I hate people.

I am beginning to think I live in some bizzaro land.  I just want early retirement.

Just squeeze your rage into a bitter little ball and release it at an appropriate time. Like that day I hit the referee with a whisky bottle - remember that?

Then go find a recruiter tell him you want to consider being a Zero and go play that game.  I am sure they will make you busy enough that you remember why you got out in the first place or give you enough to do that you don't have time to worry about being home alone on the holidays.  Besides, they are usually very good at making sure everyone has someplace to go for thanksgiving or christmas dinner.

I've been considering taking a reserve commission in the Navy for years, one day I may even do it (they accept prior service up until like 45).

I recommend a heavy session of electro-shock therapy. All those childhood traumas magically washed away, along with most of your personality.

Ritz and Water.

Just when I was about to stop reading your posts entirely, I hit the jackpot.  Good work, I needed that.

We had a bunch of the usual crap; any American can list off 90% of what we had.  Once again, I made my squash casserole, and I might put it on recipes.f13.net if only so I don't have to track down the recipe every year.  My wife made a fantastic desert which essentially combined a whipped cream/cream cheese/vanilla filling (she made the whipped cream from whipping cream!), a pumpkin pie, ladyfingers, and apricot jelly.  Dinner on Black Friday was at Brio near Perimeter Mall.  I had the lasagna and a nice cabernet.  Lunch was sashimi.  My brother's girlfriend nabbed my rice; I didn't say anything because she's German, poor thing.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

We hosted Thanksgiving in our new house...16 adults and 2 wee children, Then my cousin brought her 2 girls over after dinner to really crank up the noise quotient.

We enjoyed all the normal favs, and all the leftovers stayed at our place. Consequently, I will likely punch the next person who offers me stuffing, apple pie, or pumpkin pie. I am hoping to be craving these things by next year,
