Its official. Stephen had the Hungarian ambasidor on his show, and he presented Stephen with the official documents. Lets see if it really happens.
Love live the internet.

If I criticise your spelling, your going to come back with the Dyslexia argument, aren't you ?

I'm pretty sure Colbert will win the Internets AND the Series of Tubes if he gets a damn bridge named after him.

Or he'll beat you with the irony pipe. He'll just come back with the British spelling argument. I laughed my ass off when I saw last night's show. It's probably not a bad move for Hungary from a tourism standpoint since I doubt anyone in Hungary would recall the name of the bridge otherwise a few years from now. Does he still have to die before it goes into effect though?

I missed it but youtube is fast. It seems like if Colbert goes over and gives them even more publicity they might wave the dead rule.

Or he'll beat you with the irony pipe. Curses. I'll get you next time, Gadget, Next TIME !!! (If I was Roac, I'd shift the argument right about now and say 'We weren't talking about Grammar, but Spelling. Please keep up with my enormous cranium'. But I won't. :) )

I voted for Colbert, fyi, even though the draw to vote Chuck Norris was strong.
(Not to burst any bubbles, but I severely doubt it's going to pass the actual naming committee... they'll probably name it Zrínyi or something boring like that. They don't respect teh powar of the intarwebs!)

In other news, it looks like Stephen Jr. may have become disillusioned by socialized medicine and gay marriage and is on his way back south to the home of the brave. Personally, I think he was just monitoring the grizzly threat from the air.

Yeah, just as I predicted... the naming committee chickened out and chose a boring name with 1200 votes that didn't even make it past round 1. Booo. here's a Hungarian link for the masochistic -- haven't been able to find an english news story on this yet. -- Z.

Fuckers. This would have made them so much more money in tourism. Christ, they could've renamed it a few years later when the fad died.

Yeah, the committee claimed that because the bridge was connecting two districts called 'Békásmegyer' and 'Káposztásmegyer' (and these are the only two districts in Budapest that end in 'megyer', which means something like 'county'), they should name the bridge "Megyeri". Boooring! Oh, and there was also something about the internet voting "only serving as a way to provide the committee with possible names", so it didn't even matter who won in the first place. I'd organize a protest to overturn this horribly flawed and unfair decision that clearly threatens our freedom, but some folks are already busy making cars go boom and stuff. -- Z.

Oh thank god.
Before I clicked on the link I saw the URL and thought people might actually be throwing violent protests about the Colbert thing.
I mean, I want the bridge named after him too, but seriously.
I'm glad it was about something that really matters- sports.

So, what was the whole point of the guy even going on the Colbert Show then? Seems like a waste of Hungarian taxpayer dollars to me.

Not really... it was a VERY effective (tourism) advertisement. And besides, the ambassador didn't lie -- Colbert DID win the vote, and that's what he congratulated him for. He did add a disclaimer that the contest had no direct bearing on the actual naming of the bridge... (and yes, there is actually a very old law about not naming any kind of public place about a living person) -- Z.

There's also an Arizona law about not letting donkeys sleep in bathtubs. The law is stupid, break it!
My friend has a donkey sleeping in his bathtub right now.

Is anybody REALLY going to go to Hungary after watching the Colbert show?

People are talking about Hungary now... when they probably didn't even know it existed before the Colbert show. I'd say that's some good publicity right there. Enough to make them include Hungary in their yearly excursions into Europe or whatever? Who cares, it only cost $50. -- Z.

Probably not specifically, but relative to what people are used to in the states, Europe isn't that big. Driving across the border isn't a huge deal. Also, the guy to visit the Colbert show was the ambassador, which means he was already in the area (I assume their embassy is in DC). The cost of sending the ambassador up on a day trip to do a PR stunt is nothing, and recouped if even only a couple tourists head over. Plus there's the buzz generated around Europe, so maybe some Europeans will head over.
