In response to the criticism [about WGA], Microsoft maintains that there is a real benefit in validating a copy of Windows.
"Our experience is that customers--as long as the process is understandable, unobtrusive, quick and painless--appreciate not only their copy of Windows more, but also appreciate Microsoft more," David Lazar, director of the Windows Genuine program at Microsoft, told CNET News.com last week. Heh. |

The only benefit I saw to validating my install of Windows is that it kept telling me it would cease to function if I didn't. Other than that, I was pretty pissed at the number of hoops I had to jump through to get Virtual PC OS install to validate over a Novell network. |

Having an ActiveX control with supervisor rights running on your computer at all times is not a good thing. Having one that calls (a well known and easily intercepted) address in plain text with your BIOS information and interface IP addresses is a bad thing. MS are making some much needed changes to the notification part, but selling WGA as an advantage for even a legitimate user is just bollocks.
ActiveX and bollocks should be in the spell checker.

I love OSX. At work it's definitely worth it to me to pay a slight premium on Apple hardware to have no hassles with the OS. USB drives are falling in price, I'm thinking of getting one to boot from. And an iPod this xmas to boot from. And it won't try to prevent me because I've authenticated too many times or such bullshit.
I got cockblocked installing XP SP2 (I only have one disc/key) to try out Boot Camp on three new mactels.
No wonder they are pushing Vista as a gaming platform, it's the only thing I seem to need it (Windows) for.

Let me just say that I phear (with a capital Ph) the effects of invisible filesystem virtualization and UAC. I hope our favorite dev shacks know about the effects of this 'feature'. If they work around it by making every game require admin privs (again, like they did with 2k/XP), I'm gonna be livid.

This thread shows why I will be buying Vista, but I certainly don't appreciate MS more. They probably have more free cash than any company, generated for years with easily-pirated OSes, so no sympathy from me.
Traditionally, I'd view obtaining Vista for free as a challenge, but I just don't have the time or energy anymore. I'll rest on my laurels of having a fully-functioning XP-SP2 (even with Windows Defender running on it) that might have been paid for by someone in Ages Past (1999? 2000?), as well as having never directly paid for an OS (bought my share of preloaded laptops, of course). I've had a good run.
I also agree with Yoru.

Video card died recently, forcing me to upgrade my system to PCI-express. Ended up being an almost total replace.
Spent the weekend trying to reinstall.
Bought my first official copy of a MS OS since Dos 5 on Monday morning...
