No, people are just stupid. Also, there are a lot of shady construction companies around who will put up tinderboxes with shitty insulation, barely-to-code buildings, especially when talking about apartment complexes for low-income housing. I can't say for sure this is why we have such a massive amount of fire deaths, but it wouldn't surprise me.

If Mississippi is like where I grew up (and it is), I suspect it is partly because of the condition of most homes. The house I grew up in, for example, is probably 80-100 years old and constructed from pine. Even I was mildly shocked when my mom told me that she figured out how the cat was getting out of the house: there was a hole rotted through the floor in their bedroom.

Texas is a good state if you move to a place that suits your tastes. We have diverse options and a ton of different sub-cultures because of how big the state is. As long as you can handle the weather, at least.
