I feel like a text MUD.  Anyone know a good one?  You know, free and with people in it.

If I were actually going to play a text game, I'd play one that is not free.

Seriously. Try Discworld MUD sometime. It's free and the community is quite intelligent. The game requires some thought so the stupid get weeded out in one way or another. As for pay-to-play, Skotos.net has some nice offerings. And of course, there is the ever popular Play.net lineup as well.

The idea is that a pay-fer-MUD would be better constructed/run than a free one.  It would be much more likely to attract stupid, I think.  Not that I ever got too far in Achaea.

I won't be playing a text game.

For the thoughtful, weedout-the-dumbass game, I have EVE... but I guess it's almost a text game.

While that logic is accurate when comparing most free text MUDs to pay-to-play MUDs, there are a select few free ones (of which Discworld is one) which are comparable or better than the pay offerings out there. Just sayin'...

Duly noted, I wasn't intending to sound dismissive.  I just happen to have orders of magnitude more money than time.

I was partial to Mozart MUD if you like smaller ones, but then I played it for ten years and had a hand in making zones and coding.  It has been about four years since I was active so cannot tell you how the people are now, although I saw a couple of long-time immorts when I did a who just now.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

I just want a free one because I know this weird little quirk of mine is going to burn itself out, two days after I start playing something.

I played Gemstone back in the days when they were charging per hour and I had to pay long distance fees to boot.  In theory I shouldn't have any problem with text based role playing games, but in practice I just can't do it anymore.

As shallow as it sounds, I view it as going back to driving a horse and buggy after owning a car for years; it's just not something you're capable of anymore.  I'll admit it, I'm an eye candy whore, and as long as I'm wasting precious time in the pursuit of frivolous entertainment I want to look at something pretty.

Mind you, I don't like this part of myself.  I really want to be the kind of person who can still play text based games, but I've just moved beyond that.  It's kind of sad, really.

No it's not. A lot of people have that problem, and they should. It's like going back and playing Goldeneye or Quake or Half-Life because they innovated so much. Whoopty fucking doo. There's better games than that out now. There's no reason to go relive a past when there's more entertaining things that exist with modern production values.

I'm technically a high-up admin on DartMUD although my days of regular coding are mostly over. It's an open PVP/permadeath mud where the get-your-nuts-smashed-by-mistakes factor is in full force for newbies. It's not uncommon for a true newb to go through five characters or so if they don't seek out help from veterans.

I played a half-decent Shadowrun MUD for a week last year, and I've brushed up against the Discworld MUD a few times.  I generally don't do well with text for the same reason I don't do well with ASCII graphics:  I like to be able to see what's going in an instant.  A shitty one-inch tall sprite of an orc will do fine, but the letter 'O' on a map or a text description?  Meh.

Go play on a nice World of Darkness MUSH where people can take Addiction: Rape and Allergy: Latex as defining character flaws. All of the text of a MUD, none of the fun, twice the crazy!

If I was going to go back and play a MUD, it would probably be Gemstone.

Though I would probably only last about a month, as the grind is pretty horrid. It's on par with old-school EQ and DAoC.

Though the game can have its moments. I think I still have some floating around on my PC somewhere (saved the text). Heck, my toon was even immortalized a few years ago when someone posted an event on a site.

It's fun to google yourself sometimes.

EDIT: I also hate that people seem to have "co-opted" my name over the years.  undecided

EDIT x 2: Damn, just thinking about Gemstone makes me want to go back for a month. Maybe if/when I get a laptop I will, so I can play that and WoW at the same time.

Actually, the way Gemstone is setup, I could play all 3 with just my desktop and a laptop:

WoW on my PC, because it requires the most constantly attention.

Eve on the Laptop, Because I can set my flight path away from mobs and just fire missiles back at them. Switching targets just takes a moment.

Gemstone, I could just hunt for a few minutes then rest. I know that games mechanics Really Well.

BTW: One way or another, I'm getting a laptop soon. I'd like to get a barely-used Dell from work for $5o, but if I end up paying $700 for a Very pimped-out Dell laptop, oh well. I could use it at work to. I have a lot of old PC games I'd like to go through again. evil

The EVE interface does not like my Dell Inspiron 8200.  I can do some things but not combat, since the "health" bars and "at war with you" colors don't show up.  Just FYI.
