tried logging in with an old account - patching right now. 30 days is PERFECT - just enough time to get sick of the game again.

All true, having said that Station Access (as long as you currently enjoy at least one other SOE title) makes it much more pallatable to pay to play PS

I can't even remember what my account was called.. I thought it was the same as one of my EQ ones, but since I've never gotten a "come back to planetside, pleeeeze" email and I get eq ones all the time, I'm not so sure it's the same..

I have written it before (as have others) and will write it again:

The cave expansion was stupid. All PS players wanted was more guns, vehicles and new base designs that made tactical sense.

I have never played WoW.

Yea - the cave expansion stinks bad. Really though - I'm not too keen on any of their lore. I just like how they did the BR system.  And that combat is well done.  It just isn't worth $15 a month with BF2 being out there.

Combat is why I'm patching it. It's still what I want SWG to become, but I doubt that'll happen. Plus it's free for 30 days, though I stupidly activated it today in the middle of a crazy time crunk.

Crazy time crazy drunk?

PS combat rocks, not as good as BF2, but it also lacks a lot of that smacktard factor new shiny free shooters attract. The BR system is cool, though the inclusion of 'exp' does hamper gameplay as people camp and make dumb tactical decisions. The cave system is retahded. The lore is bland.

My standard PS post. No time to play really right now, doing EQ2, Gothic II, Eve and still a bit of SWG (in anticipation of the story move!). All in about 20 hours a week. I gained 5 more hours a week by going to bed at 1am :P My guitar playing is taking a hit, so I'm going to have to scale back again. How do people find time to play so much?

I started playing PS a month and a half or so after letting it sit for more than a year, and now that my computer can handle it I actually mostly enjoy it.

The much lower populations can make things boring in that some of the top "outfits" always like to fight a particular place, and therefore that's the only place to fight, but overall they have done some better balancing of BFR's which is what caused a mass exodus a while back.

I'm probably in the minority but I still see a -ton- of balance issues. My personal pet peeve is the maxxes compared to infantry. With the decimator weapon (which any infantry worth anything just about -always- has at least one of), the "anti-infantry" maxxes are a joke: any inf with a deci can kill a max with 3 shots. No max in the world can kill an inf with 3 shots. Or, the concept of the anti-vehicle maxxes....there isn't a vehicle in the game that can't take out an "anti-vehicle" max before the av max puts much of a dent into them.

That pet peeve aside, it's still pretty fun to play.

I agree on the MAXes. They designed them as high DPS machines, but didn't give them the ability to survive for more than a few S. AV MAXes should have to engage vehicles at moderately close range, but be especially deadly then, e.g. 3-4 hits to kill a tank. Give them much bigger alpha strike power and cut inventory back dramatically. AI MAXes should have energy auras like the pain modules in the resapwn tube rooms. Just some ideas. Don't know why I bother, though.

I have never played WoW.

Because it's free. In the entire history of FPS games from Doom on through now, none have ever maintained my interest for more than a month. So I don't invest in them if I don't need to at all.

DQ was talking about the combat from PS being in SWG, which has a better setting and more worldiness.

The lore for PS...is a bit lacking.  Sony does have a lot of art assets from SWG they could just copy right in...

For people that like the idea, but don't like the execution, you may want to check out Versus. It's an indie group looking to make a "new" MMOFPS, led by some diehard PS fans that don't like Sony's idea of balance and design.

I have zero info on their chances of success, progress, etc., but it's worth at least going and talking about ideas :)

Indeed, the only thing that AV maxes are good for is...well, taking out other maxes!  Especially given the speed of vehicles and the nature of lag, using AV maxes against vehicles at anything but point blank range is suicide.  It definitly needs to be looked at.

However out of all the 'MMOG' I have tried, PS has done the best job of balancing player progression with player power.  In this game, a newbie actually has a chance to kill a maxed out player.  In DAOC, the game actually prevents it from happening!  I've always liked the whole 'lets-reward-experience-with-versatility' type of balance situations, but that may just be me. ;)
