Argument ends with severed ear

Thursday, December 29, 2005

A Crawfordsville teen awaiting trial after police said he bit a co-worker was formally charged last week in another incident.

Randall E. Willis, 19, was in the Montgomery County Jail after police arrested him on charges of aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon and battery resulting in serious injury.

Police said co-worker Richard A. Wagers invited Willis to his hotel room to watch a football game Nov. 29.

Crawfordsville Police Chief Kurt Knecht said Wagers made a comment regarding the Indianapolis Colts, who were winning the game.

Willis, a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, became angry and bit Wagers’ nose, Officer Dennis McKinney said in a probable cause affidavit.

Willis also cut off a portion of Wagers’ left ear with a knife, kicked his left leg and stomped on it, Knecht said. The two men had been drinking, according to the affidavit.

Police said they found Willis unresponsive but breathing on the hotel room floor. They also found a piece of Wagers’ ear on the bed, according to court records.

Willis was arrested on a warrant Dec. 13.

The next day, he told police another inmate cut him across all four fingers on one hand, Jail Commander Scott Stonebraker said in an affidavit.

Stonebraker said Willis asked cell mates to injure him so he might be released from jail — when they refused, he cut himself.

A status hearing for the battery charges is scheduled for February. Court records don’t show if the new charge will be heard at the same time.

Willis pleaded guilty earlier this year to public intoxication, mischief to property and another charge of battery.
