Gabe Kotter Named Most Memorable TV Teacher

POSTED: 9:25 am EDT August 31, 2005
UPDATED: 10:03 am EDT August 31, 2005

NEW YORK -- Here's a welcome honor for Gabe Kotter: He's been named the "Most Memorable Teacher on TV."

That's at least according to Inside TV magazine, which recognizes the high school teacher from the classic 1970s television sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter" in its new issue.

Kotter was played by actor-comedian Gabe Kaplan, and the show spawned the career of film star John Travolta, who played one of Sweathogs, Vinnie Barbarino.

Also on the list Edna Krabappel, the teacher on "The Simpsons" who punishes Bart by making him write stuff on the blackboard like "I will not charge admission to the bathroom" and "I will not hide the teacher's Prozac."

Other memorable teachers named by the magazine are Laura Ingalls on "Little House on the Prairie," Ross Geller on "Friends," Charlie Moore on "Head of the Class," and Mark Cooper on "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper."

Also on the list is Fonzie on "Happy Days," Carol Vessey on "Ed," Lydia Grant on "Fame" and Max Medina on "Gilmore Girls."

Obviously there is room for an actual funny show about teachers if this drek is the most memorable. Crikey.

I know it's not T.V. but any list of favorite fake teachers without Mr. Hand is... well... bogus.

Miss Othmar/Mrs Hagemeyer - she could take Kotter on monosyllabic squawky noises any day of the week.  She dealt prettily handily with that strike-busting scab Miss Halverson.

Speaking of which, I had no idea there was a TV show based on the move.

Holy Hell.

Yeah, look at all the famous names too. I mean, Charlie Schlatter..his career practically shot into space after that show.

I would sure say so.

Oddly, he's been doing VO work.

But at least we have another person to associate with EQ2;

Heather Graham, Christopher Lee, and Charlie Schlatter. I don't see how SOE could have gone wrong!

Hey, 18 Again was kind of an OK movie.

Bright Lights, Big City is good too, but his part was small.
