Well, since this topic is sufficiently off course...

This last year we decided to buy a new car.  It would be for my wife because, well, her's was 6 years older.  We looked at a ton of stuff: hybrids, SUVs, and sports/luxury cars.  The hybrids just got too expensive too fast.  You got less car for the money and really, some of them had some really annoying drawbacks.  The Accord had a miniscule trunk and no folding seats due to the ginormous battery in the back.  The Prius was a fucking cool little car.  But after we drove the TSX a couple times, we wanted something with a bit more guts and we didn't like some of the Prius horror stories.  It came down to being not 100% confident in the technology.

SUVs, well, just didn't impress.  Bad, bad gass mileage was a major turn off.  Plus, they seemed to not have a lot of get up probably due to them weighing a ton.  The Highlander was a nice SUV though.  We came close to buying one with the Toyota people throwing ridiculous deal after ridiculous deal in our faces.  They pissed me off though, they probably would have sold me a car if they didn't keep me hostage in the damn dealership for like 2 hours. I JUST WANTED LUNCH, YOU DICKS.

This is what we ended up getting:

Acura TSX

Beautiful car.  All of the bells and whistles. 200 HP 4-cylinder.  Makes me not hate driving.  The sports suspension takes a little getting used to, but once you've got it, you're just amazed at how responsive the car can be.

Next car we'll revisit the hybrid option and maybe even a hybrid SUV if our family situation warrants it.  Hopefully the technology will be along a little farther and not so much of a goddamned price hike.  My 2002 Civic should last for another 5-8 years.  The thing is, the TSX has really ruined my car expectations and desires.  I really like having a car with a lot of juice and all of the trappings.  Downgrading to something more utilitarian would be difficult.

I bought a hybrid last year, despite it still being fairly new technology.  People said I was crazy.  Then gas prices skyrocketed.  People don't say I'm crazy any more.   :-D

Filling up a tank of premium with a car that gets 22/31 mpg is painful.  Just pure pain.

Not in regards to your automobile choice, at any rate. =)

My Ram 1500 gets 15.5 mpg if I don't run the A/C.  This translates to, as I mentioned, over $40 per week for fuel simply to commute.  If I could convince my boss to let me work from home all the time, I could use that money to buy crap from the EB discount bin.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

19/29 for me, bwahahaha...

And that's Premium fuel in NJ, too.

I think my Mustang gets 15/22 off regular. It's fast though. One of the 97 GTs, manual shift. It looks like this, but with better rims.

I can't believe we're warring for more oil and gas is still so high.

Heh, 22/31 isn't HORRIBLE.  It just pales in comparison to what a Prius might get.  We actually had a Prius ordered, but taking the TSX on the freeway sealed the deal.

Still, I don't own a ginormous truck or a 70's muscle car, so I guess I'm doing a bit better than Joe Sixpack.

Why does this country push Hummers and SUVs when we're in the middle of a fuel crisis? Or in the middle of global warming? (remember, pink is blatantly obvious)

Shitty mileage is forgiveable in older cars, I guess, 'cuz they have character. My old '78 Buick Limited used to take $5/day in gas just for the 30-mile round trip to school and back. But she was purty, so I coughed it up. (her name was the Mothership Connection) But in new vehicles? That's just a sin. Portland is very bicycle and pedestrian friendly, with an awesome public transit system, so I haven't needed to own a car in ten years.

I think I get something like 40/50 in practice.  It would probably be closer to the advertised gas mileage if there weren't so many stop signs in my part of town.

2002 Impala. 21/32.

It's silver (how many of those do you see?  rolleyes), so it fails in the character department too.

Shit, 21/30 Grand Am here, feeling the pinch at about $26 a week for the 25 minute commute to work every day. I swear I can feel the ulcer forming every time I pull into the pump. Cocksuckers. 7 years ago I was getting gas for 85 fucking cents, now I rejoice when I see it for less than 2 fucking dollars.

$2.88 for Supreme at the gas station on my commute. When it hits $3 a gallon for regular (and it will soon), I want to see the the White House Press Secretary dance. There will be all sorts of outcry. At least there will be from me.

Regular hit $1.08/litre Cdn down the street from me recently. On good days you can get it around $0.96.

$1.08 translates to roughly $3.54/gallon.

I use Premium fuel, exhaust, and have a better-than-average Fuel Injection System, so I'm not nearly as bad as the retards in SUV's and large trucks.

Also, as I've said before, I could never hope to attempt to use public transportation; it just doesn't exist where I live.
