The Linux demo server is up @ 209.59.137.153:16567
It is also listed on the Gamespy master server list as: f13.net Battlefield 2 Demo Server
VOIP is enabled for what it's worth along with Punkbuster.
Player limit is set for 64.

If you want to fly a jet or helicopter I encourage use of a joystick. My dual analog gamepad just doesn't seem to cut it. Nix can verify that.
Did I mention the US has harrier jets and the MEC has suicide bombers?

Ok, I restarted both the BF2 and Teamspeak servers. Seems there went boom at some point today.
Teamspeak had been running since Feb 14th.
I blame EA for this, completely.

I may or may not be there. I played single player and was completely underwhelmed. Hell, I wasn't even whelmed. It was just, another mediocre shooter. Shockeye was just getting a digirection because he hadn't played anything in forever.
We're thinking of installing the ut2k4 RPG mod.

Get on teamspeak. I'm on that server.
I'm still struggling with the fact I might have to reboot for the first time in a year. I don't want to do that.

Not at the moment. And it's not "cracking" damnit. Fricking EA propaganda machine.

hm, I tried to connect, but the server told me to go and get stuffed. Or more accurately "You have failed to connect. Please check your network connections(s) and try again."
Yet I can connect to other servers, np..

I couldn't connect via IP (I may have mistyped), but searching for f13 put it in the server list window. I stayed on for maybe 3 hours. Every half hour I had a 10 second freeze, not sure if that was my system (probably, it's something of a mess currently), otherwise it was flawless. Good pings as always with f13 (woot!), around 50-55 consistently.
The new shiny rocks. Great sound, though footsteps should be much quieter. Great graphics, though I didn't crank my current obsession, shadows, because my computer is starting to suck.
The real kick is the new environments. The walls you can stand on and crouch behind, the buildings evolved again from Vietnam, the same for the terrain. Good undulation affords the grunts a wee bit of cover. Lots of little spots for grunts to slip through, with vehicles a bit more restricted. Still a heavy vehicle game, but the grunts definitely got some love. Vehicles seem to handle nice, though I haven't set up my gamepad yet for flying. The USMC buggy-thing takes too much damage from rough driving, which it was built for. Planetside had the same problem with their ATVs and remedied it, hopefully that gets patched or is an easy server tweak. I can see taking damage from running into a wall, but not a nice dune jump. Fun should win out, and dune jumping is fun.
The destroyable command emplacements were a nice touch. I'm all about having lots of objectives to focus on.I couldn't figure out the keystroke to access the command stuff, so I didn't mess with that. I'm not so sure about having no ammo/health crates, though. It's cool that players can throw them down, I just fear for public play where a full 3/4 of the players are snipers.
SIlenced pistols, over/under grenade launchers, ap mines, sticky det packs, smoke grenades, lots of fun stuff to mess with.

And it what's really sets this apart from any other FPS out there right now. A ggod commander, a good squadleader or leading a squads or a number of squads that actually listens is absolutely fucking brilliant... it is also very rare and unheard of on public servers. But being the commander in a game where just a few players try to work together with you shows what this came can be, and for the first time ever, I'm looking for a clan. I love raining death with my artillery.

I am enjoying the demo, but I sure hope they fix a couple of problems:
1) their server browser really blows - it sorts and loads incredibly slow. Heck, when I sort by name half the servers aren't in order and are lumped randomly at the top of the list. 2) Need a way to save 'favorite' servers and reping the server when you select one, to make sure you ping is good before joining 3) The auto team balance function actually will take the opposing teams commander and transfer them over to the other side - very funny, except when you are the commander and your original side was winning. 4) When I quit, I really mean 'quit' not 'run BF2.exe in the background taking up 99% cpu for 5 minutes before finally closing'.
Playing commander is fun - I tend to get that spot a lot on public servers just because no one else applies for it .. and it sucks to play with UAVs and artillery. Aside from the problems above (and a few others I'm sure) the gameplay itself is spot on. The network code seems to be pretty good too.

THe command function rocks, being able to guide the troops when you actually know enemy positions all over the map...provided the troops listen. I like the way you can rebuke them :) I had my entire team grinding themselves against the entire enemy force while all the other points on the map were totally unguarded...because they were ignoring me telling them to take the back bases, even when I dropped the UAV on it and it was clearly unoccupied.
And zooming in after you drop the arty is the shit. I need to get my mic working with TS, because with a good commander and TS you can become a dominant force. You can zoom right in and see where the enemy is before the boys ever set boot to pavement, cool shit. I actually found myself so busy on the command screen, I just hid out on the carrier radar tower for a few matches.

I downloaded the demo this weekend and tried it out. I have never played BF1942 or Vietnam, so this is my first game with these guys. 1) their server browser really blows - it sorts and loads incredibly slow. Heck, when I sort by name half the servers aren't in order and are lumped randomly at the top of the list. Holy shit, you aren't kidding. The load times on this pig are FUCKING OBSCENE. I'm on a decently fast machine, just with only 512 MB RAM, and it takes 2-3 minutes just to get into a game. There is no excuse for code not being optimized so that it loads quicker than that, YES EVEN ON A DEMO. Demo means you want me to pay money for this shit. I wouldn't want to pay money to take 2-3 minutes loading a fucking map. The server browser is just fucking awful. Thanks GAMESPUD. You suck. The graphics are decent but unspectacular. The gameplay is... well, I suck. I SUCK HARD. Death for me is swift and painful, and often I have no idea what killed me or how I was killed. Not showing me my surroundings when I die is bad. Since I do it so often, I'd like to know what I died to. Respawning takes way too long on some servers, but I gathered that's a server setting. I have no joystick, and all attempts to fly result in me making a large dent in the landscape. The vehicles are ok, but fire for shit. Accuracy is all over the place, as is figuring out where your shot will hit. The gropo game would be good, if I didn't die so quickly and so often to vehicles and things I never see. With all that said, I am interested in playing some more.

Server still around? I haven't been able to connect since saturday or so.
Schild's funny.
Hammy, the gameplay can get pretty good with a clan, if you dig the game you should look up my old bf1942 clan, chicagoranger used to be with them, too. Were you ever in the evil kitchen? I forget...
My favorite pub moment thus far: being on the carrier in command mode and getting teamkilled. Then revived by the teamkiller's friend. And killed again. And revived. Etc. Annoying, but it made me laugh, especially when I broke the chain, got in a skiff and they chased me around until I landed, all the while with my girlfriend asking why my team was attacking me, and naively not comprehending the concept of griefers.

My play time is too flaky for joining a clan, just like joining a reasonably active guild on an MMOG. Also, did I mention I suck? My skillz are not what a clan wants, unless said clan wants members to die repeatedly in the most grotesque fashion while screaming "WTF?"

I've been playing is a fair bit recently and have been enjoying it rather a lot. But the fuckign thing keeps crashing my computer. I've had to reinstall it TWICE already in the last week because it'll lock up and the graphics get all corrupt.
Hoping the retail version is less of a disease ridden system whore, as the gameplay itself is great.

I doubt the retail is less of a crashing whore since it went gold before the demo was released.

I've discovered a whole new BF2. Tonight Schnappy and I decided to change where we played and picked a random server. We thought it was your normal 64 player server and what not. We got in and noticed the map was a smaller. 16 people smaller to be exact. My god was that THE most fun I've ever had in an online shooter. With there being so little room and so many people it was tense ALL the time. The only flags around are the crane, one on the west beach and 2 in between. The railroad tracks become a frontline for both sides and lead to some seriously heavy crossfire.
Playing on this small a map helped me discover my new love: Tanks. I was rolling around in a tank for all 4 rounds and died a maximum of 5 times per round. The commander was actually listening and kept me well maintained with repair/ammo boxes. During a fight with another tank from the US side he dropped 2-3 which kept me on top. I think I managed to topple 5 enemy tanks in a matter of 10 minutes. Barring the spawn timer I could of taken more out. Overall I'm thinking the super large maps are still too big. One soldier taking over a base is stupid as shit and the use of a 16 player map for 64 people is an awesome idea more servers should toy with *nudges shockeye* Eh?
Last round: Kills: 42 Deaths: 5 and my squad was at 268 total points with the second place squad sitting at 40 total points (Not kills, points.)

Yah I hopped on a server like that last night too - maybe it's one of the retail servers? I donno, but I noticed that the new weapons were unlocked after a few rounds of playing. Had a lot of fun playing Medic on that map, since everyone is pretty close together. Got the highest points on my team from mostly reviving and healing folks.
The alternate medic weapon is also a *ton* better than the default.. more like the Special Forces default weapon.
Didn't play around with the other weapons much, but it's nice to see that when you 'upgrade' you unlock a new weapon for each class.
