Got this link from the Morlocks. MirrorMaskThis appears to be a live-action/animation film by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, with Jim Henson's production company. It is a total dream trip. If you've enjoyed McKean's artwork, you'll recognize the visual style. I'm not sure whether to fear this movie or be excited. EDIT: Oh yeah, definitely click on "Previews" to see the trailer.

Looks great. Too bad I can't figure out what it's about. Being that it's Gaiman and all, I figured they'd put some focus on the story in that trailer.

It looks like it's probably in the same vein as Neverwhere and/or American Gods. How much more do you need to know about the story?

IIRC it's supposed to be the psuedo-sequel to Labyrinth.

vampirehipi23: I would enjoy a book written by a monkey and turned into a movie rather than this.

I want to see this.
Gaiman's insane shit doesn't translate well to video/movie form though. And that's unfortunate.
Neverwhere was terrible.

I want to say I get the premise.
But then my brain keeps denying that I just saw what I think I thought I saw.
Still, whoa.
Neverwhere still sucks.

This was at Sundance this year. The word on it was pretty good.

Heh, haven't seen the miniseries. Heard it was bad. But.... I think Gaiman has a hell of a lot more cinema clout now then he did then. The Jim Henson Co. seems to be pushing for stranger/more surreal stuff since they sold off the muppets. Farscape was their baby, and if they let Gaiman go wild Mirrormask might be worth a viewing just for that. I'm sure if it's shitty, Gaiman will go back and write a much better novel off the movie....

Imagine: A Gaiman VG directed by Tim Shaffer. Perhaps a Deus Ex style FP RPG? The possibilities are limitless.

This looks good. I'll be watching it.
Hey, in a somewhat related topic, has anyone seen Howl's Walking Castle yet? I searched and found nothing here on "Howl's," so I don't think anyone has been talking about it here yet.
I read one review and it said it was good. I was wondering if it was suitable for children or not.

Howl's been available for awhile (maybe only in fansub), and I think it is PG or lower. 10/10 for Mirrormask -- I always support people trying to be truly innovative. Even if the story sux, I'll pay.

This looks even better. Even if Gaiman had nothing to do with it, I'd see it just because Dave McKean directed it. I absolutely love his artwork, from the Sandman covers to the other comics work he has done. He is a better artist than 99.9% of all "modern artists" of the last 30 years.

I agree, Haemish. The last anniversary my girlfriend and I had, I special ordered a compilation of his artwork for her. She loved/loves it. Since she is an artist (like, a talented one... she's paid to draw and play with Photoshop and Illustrator now) she's very picky about her art, but McKean is just strange and creative enough to keep her interested.

Hmmm...might be a worthy addition to my insane VHS/DVD section along with Pink Floyd's The Wall, Asimov's Light Years, and Daft Punk's Interstella 5555. I need regular daily dosages of teh trippy to keep me in fighting trim.
