Reznor's court win comes after spending the better part of his 40th birthday May 17 defending his assertion that Malm ripped off the rocker while Reznor was partying and not paying attention to the state of Nine Inch Nails' finances. Reznor claimed that as recently as 2003, he had less than $3.5 million in total assets and just $400,000 in cash despite selling more than 20 million records worldwide.
Malm, meanwhile, failed to win his counterclaim, which contended Reznor actually owed him $2 million in commissions. puzzling. It was the guy's job to monitor that for them. So they could be in a coma and presume good fiduciary responsibility. However, the impending mortgage part of me thinks suxx0r Trent for not giving a shit, or presuming the champagne would always flow from something magical. Little over the top there, but whatever.

These kinds of stories really fascinate me, because it's one of my reasons, made public, on why I refuse to take most entertainers seriously in any manner of speaking. Reznor is probably my second or third favorite musician, so it's fairly bitter to see somebody whose art I enjoy beat a dead political-horse while at the same time showing themselves incapable of being a financially responsible adult. I guess this is an old story in the industry, though...

In its own statement, the Viacom-owned MTV responded to the abrupt move.
"While we respect Nine Inch Nails' point of view, we were uncomfortable with their performance being built around a partisan political statement," the net says.
ROCK DA VOTEZ, BITCHES! But don't make any kind of statement on our overproduced industry-fellating awards show. That would be wrong. What a bunch of fucking douchebags. As for Reznor, and just rock managers in general, most of them aren't worth the skin they are inhabiting. These are people that are supposed to keep rock stars from having to deal with shit like finances, taxes, and such while they make music. THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE THERE FOR. It's their fucking jobs. But I feel that most of them are quite happy with their clients in perpetual drug comas so the managers can go run around fucking models and leeching money. Not to mention the fact that most of them are enablers for the weak-willed drug addicts many rock musicians are.

Trent Reznor Awarded Nearly $3 Million 1 hour, 1 minute ago NEW YORK - A jury awarded Nine Inch Nails alternative rocker Trent Reznor $2.95 million after finding his former manager breached his contract and acted fraudulently, a lawyer said Tuesday. The jury in Manhattan federal court delivered the verdict Friday against John Malm, Reznor's longtime manager, said attorney Zia F. Modabber. The award likely would top $4 million when interest is added. Modabber said he called Reznor, who is on tour, with the news. "He was almost silent at first. It's still sinking in," Modabber said. "It's been a difficult thing for him in a lot of ways. They were very, very close friends." A lawyer for Malm did not immediately return a call for comment Tuesday. The civil verdict came after a three-week trial in which Reznor testified that he was stunned to learn in 2003 that despite millions of dollars in earnings, he was left with as little as $400,000 in cash. "I felt I had an accountant I couldn't trust," Reznor testified. Reznor sued Malm, contending he duped Reznor into signing a contract that gave Malm 20 percent of his gross earnings rather than net earnings, and let Malm collect the commission forever. A lawyer for Malm, Alan Hirth, said in an opening statement that Malm worked many years for no salary — and kept nothing secret from Reznor. Nine Inch Nails' fourth studio album and first in six years, "With Teeth," debuted last month at No. 1 in sales. By my calaculations, if Reznor put out more albums and shilled a bit more for movie soundtracks (Lost Highway was incredible), he'd be richer than god.
That's just fuzzy math though.
