76-year-old Long Island man is accused of crushing birds' heads
Friday May 06, 2005

EAST NORTHPORT, Long Island (AP) A 76-year-old man is being accused of trapping birds and crushing their heads. Suffolk County animal protection authorities say William Thomas was arrested yesterday. Police say neighbors complained about him.

Roy Gross of the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says they have a videotape of Thomas killing the animals in his backyard by stepping on their heads. S-P-C-A officers confiscated traps and collected the carcasses of several dead birds and animals found on the property.

Gross says there was a dead squirrel hanging from a tree.

Police say are charging Thomas with animal cruelty.

Thomas was released on a field appearance ticket and was taken to University Hospital at Stony Brook for a psychiatric evaluation. He also was issued several summonses for hunting and trapping violations.

Unless they're chickens, why don't they just fly off?  When I was a kid I used to try and catch birds all the time and never managed it.   I am positive I was faster at 10 or so than a 76 year old man.

There is obviously something wrong with those birds and they deserved to have their heads smushed.

Heh- total "Miranda Richardson as highway robber 'The Shadow' in BlackAdder III" moment. I picture this guy running around his backyard shooting squirrels and birds out of the trees with a flintlock pistol now  :-D

When speaking of the MMOG industry, the glass may be half full, but it's full of urine. HaemishM

I don't understand the fuss.  He's quick-killing them right?  Not staking them out and playing games with engine freeze and pliers.  Trust me, stringing up a troublesome squirrel does wonders keeping the rest of those rats with puff-tails away, and in the long-run is a kindness for them all.  Anyone that's ever had to re-seal their roof eaves understands what a real pest squirrels and bird swarms can be.

Suburban folks... how much you want to bet most of the complaining neighbors have cats that roam the neighborhood.  *That's* a real cruelty.  tongue
