First trailer is out.It looked like a Guy Ritchie film. I suppose that's good enough for a watch once it hits Netflix.

So apparently this got as much attention here as it seems to be getting in the theatres, which is too bad because its really quite good. Saw it last night, and yea its very obviously Guy Ritchie, but that seems to work really well with the 60s backdrop. I know in the trailers on tv I was thrown a bit by Cavill's accent, because it doesn't quite sound like any particular American accent, but for Solo it just seems to work. Totally adds to his overconfident swagger. The let down of the trailers is how they completely ignore Armie Hammer who is outstanding in this.
It's fun, cheesy, action packed and totally stylistic. The exposition in spots is so heavy handed its like Ritchie went fuck-it and just started overdoing it on purpose. There are entire scenes where you are basically just supposed to read a characters entire background from the subtitles. It worked though. It's setup for a sequel and I honestly hope they make one.
It will get inevitable comparisons to Bond (they even use that in the trailers) but I liked that it reminded more of the earlier Bonds. Highly recommended.

This movie was actually one of the most enjoyable movies I have seen this summer it is quite good. I think the marketing of it just confused everybody but it really is an excellent film and I recommend it.

What was the marketing problem? Your descriptions sound like the trailer.
If it is just bad American accents, then I probably didn't notice.

I know I was turned off by the trailer. It just looked like another asinine "they hate one another now they are buddies" movie to me.

It will get inevitable comparisons to Bond (they even use that in the trailers) but I liked that it reminded more of the earlier Bonds. Highly recommended.
To be totally fair, Ian Flemming was also involved with the creation of the original show. |

If it is just bad American accents, then I probably didn't notice.
My main problems with the Trailers/Marketing were that they didn't emphasize that it was a Guy Ritchie movie (they were too busy using dumb lines like "It out Bonds, Bond!"), and that they left Armie Hammer almost completely out of it. The accent thing was just kind of odd. He uses an accent I can only describe as smarmy. It doesn't really sound like any real American accent I'd ever heard. In the trailer it came across really oddly. In the movie, it worked. |

I went in with low expectations, but this was just a whole lot of fun. I really liked how they walked a fine line with the viewpoint shifting. While I really like Cavel's Solo, I think had they stuck with him the whole time it would have gotten very wearing. I read someone somewhere else complaining about him being an empty suit, but I couldn't disagree more. He had so many great moments. The look he said "I think think he's chasing us." The disgusted look both at the beginning and then again at the end of the getting through the fence scene. The perfect american spy thing with the safe, disgustingly competent and yet charmingly incompetent at the same time. The whole boat sequence.
This is textbook style over substance. The plot can't stand any scrutiny, but it's so wonderfully realized that I just went along for the ride.

His accent is mostly just smug not really attempting any kind of fake accent the guy is just so smugly sure of himself it lends to a very odd speech cadence. It actually works really well for his character in the movie though. |
