I have an upcoming business trip to Australia and New Zealand.  My last day of the trip in Wellington, NZ is empty until my 4pm flight home.

Recommendations?

I have never played WoW.

Its New Zealand, not Australia. You only have to worry about the sheep in NZ

And the earthquakes. Although the last big one was in Christchurch, not Wellington IIRC.

I did a Wellington Rover Lord of the Rings tour, which was pretty sweet and handled the transportation on the day.  If super LotR nerd is right up your alley I recommend it, many filming sites are in the Wellington area and you get to see many of the major touristy points of the city as part of the tour anyway.  Of course, it is Wellington so you might need something for the rain or the wind.

I went on a rare sunny day that looked like this and this.  That's Karaka Bay (I think) and the main Harbor.

I made a video in Wellington in 2007: Weekend in Windy

It's windy. I liked it.

If you don't have time for the LotR tour (getting to the airport early, etc) then I recommend a visit to Te Papa, if you like Museums, anyway. Lots of cool polynesian stuff to see there. One of the times I was there, they also had a huge LotR prop and costume exhibition, which was pretty great, so it's also possible they'll have similar for the Hobbit.

I managed a local half day LotR tour and the museum.  Thanks for the suggestions.  The tour sites in Wellington included the hill the hobbits rolled down from the farmer chase scene, the "we need to get off the road" location and the spot where the hobbits hid under the roots from the Nazgul.  The guide would stand in the spot and hold up the cut scene from the movie.
