I would have posted this in the Comics subforum; I thought it would get more views here and is more of a furniture question than a comics-specific post.
I've spent some time looking online for comic storage solutions that are not longbox-based. I've found a couple of guys who make really awesome-looking wooden storage units with drawers. Some have a library card catalogue-esque design. They seem to range in price from $800 to $2000. I don't have a TON of comics (3 to 3 1/2 long boxes, plus trades). I do expect to obtain more, as my 7 yr-old also buys her own comics in addition to my purchases.
Short of finding a dresser and re-purposing the drawers into comic storage (which also carries some issues with drawer weight and slideyness), I'm stuck with ugly shit that won't work in my living room/home in general or with the expensive and custom-built stuff that will take a long time to get.
I'm a bit more into paying for shit and having it now.
Right now I'm leaning towards buying an unfinished dresser, a bunch of surplus comics (my local shop sells "grab bag" bundles for a few bucks), and some kind of plastic sealant stuff. I figure that I can stain the wood and then affix random bits from the surplus comics. I might just avoid that and go with staining the wood and leaving it plain.
I know some of you guys are much handier/craftier/better-at-Google than me. Any ideas? If I can include some kind of game storage as well (boxed board games, not console), that might also work.
I have a feeling that this is going to come down to purchasing some kind of dresser or whatever and then adding dividers into the drawers, maybe also installing better slidey parts so that the drawers don't break.

I traded in my fun blog for several legal blogs. Or, "blawgs," as the cutesy attorney blawgosphere likes to call 'em.

This guy has a bunch of options that may be a bit cheaper than what you're looking at.

Heh, that was one of the expensive guys. It also appeared that he had an almost year-long wait back in 2010.

I'm actually looking for something for about 8,000 Magic Cards that isn't a $1000+ giant monstrosity from GeekChic. Storage for geekstuff just isn't a priority I guess for most geeks since they tend to be absolutely compulsive in buying more shit instead of storing it well.

When she crossed over, she was just a ship. But when she came back... she was bullshit!

What about an old Library Card Catalog cabinet? The standard format would store them sideways rather than vertical, but I'm sure there are some nice ones on the architectural salvage market that wouldn't cost much (comparatively). For that matter, there might be some old Periodicals storage of the same provenance that would work for Slack. --Dave

Ask around (or craigslist) for carpenters/furniture guys. You might score a local guy who will custom something for you for a reasonable price. There is a lot of slack in the trades market right now.

I built my own storage cabinet for my comics back about 12 years ago. It ended being about 3' by 8'. Was quite nice, had extra storage underneath, that sort of thing. It now rests in my parents basement, because it was just to big to move in to an apartment, so my comics once again fill the bottom third of my hall closet.
