Remake of Ys III. Looks like it's several years old but is now available on Steam. I remember playing this on the TG16 CD. Always liked the Ys games.

I was drinking when I wrote this, so sue me if it goes astray.

Is it any good?  I never got into Ys, don't really know much about it, and the screenshots are kind of vague.  Is this like, Zelda-y or Final-Fantasyesque, or what?

It's Ys-y. I can't think of many games really like it. If it absolutely must be compared to something, Zelda is the closest, but it's really not much like Zelda outside of being a top-down action RPG.

Looking up Youtube clips of it or more modern Ys games like Ys VI might serve you better for giving you an idea of the gameplay.

And as to whether or not it's any good, I'll say that while I haven't played Oath before (I have played the original Ys III, though), I have yet to play a bad Ys game, and I've played most of them.

If it's like the originals, it's more Zelda like as koro said. The first two games (which were really one game split into two) were more like Zelda I (top down) and the third game is more like Zelda II (side scrolling). I've only ever played the first three games but I really liked them. It's its own brand. If you dig around on the abandonware sites, there's an old PC version of Ys I (and maybe II - been a while since I looked).

Whatever it is like it's managing to kick my ass on a regular basis. Every time I feel a bit confident and push forward I end up getting in over my head. But, it's fun enough that I keep coming back for more.

Do you have to grind at all in this game or is regular exploring and accidentally taking wrong paths enough to level and make progress? Perhaps on easy?

I'm not very far into the game, but usually it's having to learn the patterns to fight certain enemies, or groups of enemies, without getting hit. Grinding might be possible but it doesn't seem to change the fact that taking 5 hits will end you and there are no items you can carry to restore health. It's entirely possible I'm just terrible. Playing on normal.

If it's like the originals, a bit of grinding might be a good strategy. I never did grind in the original games (it just never occurred to me to play like that) but after inputting other people's save codes I could see that they definitely did do some grinding to beat the end bosses and such. Grinding was a foreign concept to me until I played EQ.
