I love everything Maynard has ever done, Howerdell is a great songwriter and they have a great lineup in APC.

But is it just me that thinks this album blows? The only thing it did for me was prompt me to dig up my old Fear tapes. And wince a lot.

First lame album I've bought in years, because I didn't preview it, figuring APC just kicks that much ass. Woops.

I bought this used. I dig it, but had not really heard much APC before. The only song on there I really can't take is the cover of "Peace, Love and Understanding." I dig the fact that they are really trying to take most of the songs and do it in a style that you just wouldn't imagine having heard the original, but I don't think this one works at all. I like their remake of their own song "Pet" on this one, and really dig their take on "Imagine" and "The Fiddler and the Drum."

Yep, looking back Joe was right. I'll give it more ear time at some point, but my collection is getting to a decent size, so I'd rather listen to something I actually enjoy right off the bat, like the live Portishead or BLS discs. Zakk is setting me back years in terms of trying to 'not shred'....luckily my most ardent shred-hating friend says I'm balancing it out pretty well and haven't lost feel yet....

I like the album, but there are some rough moments.  Didn't care for "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" or "People are People."  But I really do love "Counting Bodies".

Black Velvet Flag does lounge covers of punk songs.  I think this kicks ass.  When I was in undergrad, my punk & ska show policy was that I'd do a set of different punk or ska covers of other songs...or covers of punk/ska songs.  People seemed to like it.

aMOTION is pretty good. Even though it's just remix's of their older/current songs, it makes some of them better.

I wanted to cry after I hear it the 25th time through and *still* didn't like it. The only good song on it is the remake of one of their own songs.

I don't mind covers, as long as they're more interpretative rather than straight up copies. Examples: Shellac's version of AC/DC's "Jailbreak", Laibach's "One after 909", Devo's version of Satisfaction, the Butthole Surfers "Sweet Loaf", just about anything Elvis covered (which was a lot), and of course, bands like Dread Zeppelin or Black Velvet Flag.

I just heard Korn's cover of "Another Brick in the Wall" on the radio, and that's a good example of a pointless cover. It isn't any different than Pink Floyd's version, except with newer instruments. Same goes for Marilyn Manson's version of Personal Jesus, which is getting a lot of airplay lately as well. Yet, people like them because they're so much like the originals. I don't get it.

APC does a good job of doing these songs in their own unique style, so I'll give 'em credit for that at least. Everything from "What's Going On?" to "Let's Have a War" is nothing like the original. Even if the APC stuff isn't all that great, at least they're trying to be more creative about it.

My band's first official rented "band room" sat on top of a questionable "Music Club". When I'd head down to pay rent, there's just a bar, about twenty phones and five television sets. No bookmaking, nope. Anyway, the landlord told me if we played 'nice' music, he'd knock whatever he made in booze sales off our rent, however he figured that. So we had lounge versions of pretty much every song we knew.

It was great practice, because we'd modify them in real-time, no idea how they'd come out until we were done. Totally cheesy, at one point we were actually putting on little lounge shows in the afternoon for our regular hangers-on, dressing up in nice polyester suits and all (mine was orange!). Good times.

"Counting Bodies" hasn't clicked with me, but then "Pet" is one of my favorite songs off their last album.

I haven't heard the APC covers, but just about everything else mentioned in theis thread makes me cringe.

Covers that beat the original by a country mile - "All Along The Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix, "I Fought The Law" by The Clash, "Jealous Guy" by Roxy Music, "Dear Prudence" by Siouxsie and the Banshees and "Emma" by The Sisters of Mercy.

If I had to pick covers that beat the original..."Eleanor Rigby" by Silke Bischoff (found on side b of their Unplugged DVD - it's a CD and the last track is Rigby) and....hmmm, it's rare that a cover beats the original by a long mile. I normally listen to covers just to hear a song in a different way. Better or not is irrelevant most of the time.

How did you get your Hands on that? As far as I know you'd have to import it since they do not have a distribution contract for the US. I also thought that you do not like goth music very much.

Fortunately for you, Zakk really has been doing a lot of pointless shredding these days, so it should wear off soon.  Yeah, I know that's his BLS schtick, but it's getting old.  I miss the melody and thought that went into a lot of his old solos.  You can tell when Zakk plans a solo out ahead of time, and he doesn't seem to do it that often anymore.
