So I tried to play a game I bought on steam this morning, and the steam client had to update. When it finished it said "this account has not been accessed before on this computer" (which is weird, as this is the only computer I have used in 2+ years and I have not made any changes recently).

When I tried to log in it froze up, which I thought may have been a bad password. When I try to recover my password I get "this account cannot be found".

Anyone else having problems?

I've seen that message because of Steamguard, but this sounds more serious.   You should probably contact valve support.

There is another layer of authentication on steam, if you log in using another machine you will be sent an e-mail with a short string of letters that you need to enter into steam to proceed with the log in on that account.

The message you have is what I normally get when logging in from a friends House, however the email and the place to enter it usually automated. Not sure about your freezing.

Funny part is, if I log into steam at my friends house, when I get home, I have to do this again, as it seems to forget my original machine.

I have never logged into steam from another machine though.

It must have been some server glitch as I was able to log in just fine a second ago.

This happened to me before too and I never figured out why. I did avoid panic by logging into their website before contacting support.

The weird thing was, I could not log into the website either. It kept telling me "username does not exist".

Now that's weird. Maybe I waited long enough for it to correct itself.

Might be a good idea to file something with them anyway, just in case.

Keep in mind the forums/support have a separate username/password.  That might not be relevant to you, but worth mentioning just in case.

Could be a UAC thing.   If you accidentally logged in as another user/admin maybe it thought you were on another computer.  Vista/Win7 have that weird ass virtual store which often screws up stuff like that.

Don't expect a quick reply from support. I've currently got 3 tickets open, none of which have had anythng except the automated reply and the oldest is just about to hit 1 week :-(

This happened to my friend during the sale. He hadnt logged in for a while, and then it wouldnt let him, and it wouldnt ever send him his password, as it said it couldnt find his account. Two days later, everything worked fine again. Sounds like they are having some DB issues.

This just hit me.  I put together a new computer, installed steam, and got the code to activate my new computer.  It worked fine, and I logged into steam.  Turned off computer, tried to get on next day, and now my account doesn't exist for either log-on or password retrieval purposes.  Looks like many people are having this problem on the steam forums, and there's little we can do it about but just wait and hit f5 for updates.

Something is certainly up on their end. I've had to verify my account twice with emails in the last week. I've been on the same computer at home the whole time.  Ohhhhh, I see.

I'm hoping it's not a security breach.

I've been getting the code required to login from different computers for months, it's nothing new.  It is really annoying though when I login from my laptop and it forces me to get a code and THEN forces me again when I login on my main pc.

And now Steam lost my EVE install.  I get done playing a bit of Fable 3, go to launch it, and it's on 1 gig of  8.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

Just to add to the fire, I have an open ticket about my Puzzle Quest saves not downloading on this laptop I am using while my main rig is out of service.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

I tried to download the demo to DWARVES!?!? and the game wouldn't even launch. Not much of a daily sale when that happened.

Finally Steam "support" decided that Steam Cloud saves must have been corrupt.  I'll never get to the midgame of Puzzle Quest due to the dumbass save structure.
