Ya know, I haven't upgraded my computer since...goddamn, SP1 abouts. I think it's time I got some of them.
If it breaks a game, i swear to god I'll go berserk. It took years to get my computer solid as a rock.

SP2 did break a couple of games. I think Freedom Force was the biggest one, but I could be forgetting others. They are working on a patch for it.
The couple of things to watch out for in SP2:
1. It'll consume a buttload of diskspace backing up SP1 stuff in case you want to rollback the upgrade. Not a big deal unless you're someone who likes to run with a small C: drive.
2. The new automatic update thingy is more intrusive and annoying. You can still configure it how you want, though.
3. The firewall software will pop up a query box to ask if you want to unblock a port every time you try to use a game. This isn't bad, unless the game is going into fullscreen mode and you can't switch back to unblock the port it wants to use. So you might have to exit out and then unblock and reload again. You only have to do this once for each application, so at first you'll be like, "WTF is this?" but after a while it won't bother you.

Maybe I should just wait for Longhorn.

I haven't heard anything about that. I've heard some apps and games have been broken, but everything I run works fine. As for the auto-updater, I just ignore it. I could easily remove it from startup, but I'm too lazy. The firewall actually isn't too shabby when you get your exceptions set up. I've poked at it from one of my Win2k boxes and it seems solid enough.

Apparently someone forgot to tell my computer this, Freedom Force works just fine under SP2 for me. I've actually not run into ANY games/apps/etc that SP2 has broken for me.

The only thing I know that broke for me was Nero 5. Worst yet, they won't offer an update that'll fix it. Instead, Nero wants me to purchase Nero 6. So, no burning for a couple of months now. At least on this machine.
I don't really blame Microsoft for it though. I blame Nero. SP2 was needed.

Perhaps you really don't have SP2 installed. Or perhaps it's something specific to your video card. I've never seen an explanation of exactly what the problem was other than it crashes when you try to start it with some memory access violation. There are supposed to release a patch for it once they get FF vs. TTR out the door. Bruce

2. The new automatic update thingy is more intrusive and annoying. You can still configure it how you want, though. How the hell do you turn off the damned annoying 'your computer may be unprotected!' popup? I don't feel like running MS's versions of firewall or virus protection, but it keeps nagging me about them EVERY DAMN TIME I STARTUP! SP2 also decided I needed a login name every time I startup my machine. I can't figure out how to disable that fucker on my desktop, but the laptop didn't switch it on when I upgraded. Anyone have hints here, because I can't find it under the login preferences where it used to be.

Not really. I had some problems installing SP2 on an AMD-64 laptop (eMachines) with non-standard Omega graphics drivers. On installing a new drive, I found that the process of installing SP2 before the same drivers was painless. I've upgraded XP to SP2 on a bunch of other laptops (Toshiba, IBM, Dell, HP, Compaq) without any problems.

Fantastic, thanks! Now, anyone have any hints on removing the password/ login screen? On bootup? I'm not sure what you mean. If at bootup, *I think* having the latest version of .NET may help that. If you don't even have .NET at all, then ignore what I said.

dotNet is probably what is giving you a login screen. If you only have one user you don't get the login screen. dotNet creates another special user for you "ASP.NET something". Delete that user. Passport and similar probably won't work, but its all shite you don't really need. You can still play games.
It is installed to allow dotNet programs to run in a lower security context than the default user. You'll still get raped by bad default permissions, rogue ActiveX controls and IE bugs, so it's like a lock on the door of a straw house.

If you can't figure out what account/setting is causing the login screen to come up, you can use Tweak UI as a workaround. Tweak UI is part of the PowerToys package found here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspxYou can download the entire package or just Tweak UI if you want. Run Tweak UI, open up the Logon menu and go to Autologon.
